Saturn V Rocketdyne F1 Engine - (Part 1) An outstanding accomplishment by our space program. This is one of the best clips, up close, I have ever seen. If you guys have seen better please link me. The F-1 engine is a single-start, 1,500,000-pound fixed- thrust, bipropellant rocket system. The engine uses liquid oxygen as the oxidizer and RP-1 (kerosene as fuel. The engine is bell-shaped, with an area expansion ratio the ratio of the area of the throat to the base of 16:1. RP-1 and LOX are combined and burned in the engine's thrust chamber assembly. The burning gases are expelled through an expansion nozzle to produce thrust. The five-engine cluster used on the first stage of the Saturn V produces 7,500,000 pounds of thrust. All of the engines are identical with one exception. The four outboard engines gimbal; the center engine does not. The fuel pump supplies fuel to the thrust chamber and gas generator at a flowrate of 15,471 gpm. The turbine, producing 55,000 brake horsepower, drives the fuel and oxidizer pumps. It is a two-stage, velocity-compounded turbine consisting of two rotating impulse wheels separated by a set of stators. The turbine mounts on the fuel pump end of the turbopump so that the two elements of the turbopump having the greatest operating temperature extremes (1500 Fahrenheit for the turbine and -300 Fahrenheit for the oxidizer pump) are separated. Hot gas from the gas generator enters the turbine at a flowrate of 170 pounds per second through the inlet manifold and is directed through the first-stage nozzle onto the 119-blade first-stage wheel. The hot gas then passes through the second-stage stators onto the 107- blade second-stage wheel, and then into the heat exchanger. This flow of hot gas rotates the turbine, which in turn rotates the propellant pumps. Turbine speed during mainstage operation is 5,550 rpm. The power of one Saturn V is enough to place in earth orbit all U.S. manned spacecraft previously launched. The combined propellant flow rate of the five F-1s in the Saturn V was 3,357 US gallons per second, which would empty a 30,000 US gallons swimming pool in 8.9 seconds. TAMU Senior Aerospace Design: Hybrid Rocket Engine Test 3 As part of the senior design project for Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, a group of students designed, built, and tested rocket components. This video shows the group of students testing the hybrid engine they had built. The video shows the split screen of the four video cameras positioned throughout the test site. The upper left is the vent tube which allows the group to see when the oxidizer tank is full and the test can start. The upper right is the actuator that disconnects that oxidizer line. The bottom right is the control room with the test supervisor and ignition general. The bottom left screen is the overall test stand. This third test is the most successful one yet after fixing the faulty dump valve and getting a little bit more nitrous oxide in the tank. Hybrid Rocket Motor Nozzle Tests Update on my senior project here at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This video is intended primarily for my advisor, but to anyone else who isn't familiar with what I'm doing: This is a demonstration hybrid rocket motor in our propulsions lab, employing oxygen as the oxidizer and plexiglas (polymethylmethacrylate) as the fuel, with propane as the ignitor. The purpose of this motor is DEMONSTRATION of hybrid motor characteristics, NOT thrust performance. As such, the thrust is intentionally low (this is also good for safety). My senior project is to design a rocket nozzle or two that will sufficiently demonstrate to students the higher performance that can be expected from the use of a nozzle, particularly in the form of increased thrust. Cal Poly's motto is "learn by doing." I am doing exactly that. Machining new fixtures and nozzles, testing the nozzles, collecting the data, and doing everything else myself has been a learning experience, allowing me to see the design process from conception to application.
