Animal Testing - Good Science? Or Pointless Cruelty? Part 1 While virtually every topic regarding animal rights and welfare is contentious. I think there is perhaps nothing more contentious then the case of animal testing both for and against. For many people who support animal testing the resounding statements in support of it, in which they make, is :) "I believe in the advancement of science" "humans are more important then animals" Well so do I and many other animal lovers, but advancement in science that serves not to immorally end the countless lives of innocent animals each and every year and pose risk to humans. Many diseases have been cured or made preventable as a result of animal testing. Such as polio, diphtheria, cholera, smallpox, rabies and syphilis. Polio for example - a highly infectious viral disease which only affects human beings and can put a person into a state of total paralysis in a matter of hours. Paralysis being the damage of nerve cells which leads to lack of strength in the muscles and effectively shuts them down; was cured or made preventable as a result of animal testing. A vaccine to protect and prevent the disease in human beings was invented by American Physician Jonas Salk in the 1950's. The vaccine was later considered impure because people believed as the vaccine which stemmed from and was grown in monkey kidney cells carried the AIDS virus, which was known to be contained in monkey tissue cells; a claim which was later debunked by members of the scientific community. In the late 1950's an oral vaccine was invented which has now replaced the injected vaccine devised by Jonas Salk. The above is an example of how testing animals has resulted in a vaccine which prevents such a debilitating disease in human beings. Or does it? In 1954 Dr. John Enders, Dr.Thomas H. Weller, and Dr. Frederick C. Robbins won the Nobel Peace Prize for proving that is was possible to grow polio-virus in non nervous system human tissue. This medical science team fell short of releasing a polio-vaccine to the public, and around the same time, Jonas Salk began using monkey kidney cells to produce her anti polio vaccine, when an alternative to animal testing was available and an award was given for the development and creation of this alternative which could of led to a polio vaccine. Polio is a disease which spreads as a result of crowded living conditions and poor hygiene, so the decline in cases of polio cannot solely be attributed to the vaccine, but also to improved hygiene. Furthermore to the above facts :) written in the 1984 book 'The Monkey Wars' the Author Deborah Blum mentions "in the late 1980s, scientists tracking the life histories of 59,000 pregnant women all vaccinated with Salk polio vaccine found that their offspring had a thirteen times higher rate of brain tumors than those who did not receive the vaccine." Veterinary medicine and human medicine is not the same, an example of this, is the fact that arsenic is not poisonous to rats, mice or sheep, but is poisonous to human beings; and morphine which relieves pain in human beings and is a sedative, acts as a stimulant in horses goats and cats and has the opposite effect. This is proof that because animals share a different genetic makeup and body structure to human beings, and we share one (what affects one human being affects all human beings) that veterinary medicine data can no longer be applied to human beings because the results vary from one species to another. Disregarding the horrific, disturbing and upsetting abuses of animals as a result of animal research, it serves as a dangerous exercise to apply data from one species to another which varies so much. A synopsis based exclusively on science and medical grounds and not moral ones. Animals and humans are not the same! as much as scientists want you to believe that they are. Animal research focuses on artificially inducing the symptoms of diseases found in human beings and attempting to treat those symptoms. So it's a bulletproof fact that animals and humans do not get the same diseases. This video description is continued on part 2 of this video.
