Pol Pot's Legacy - Cambodia April 1995 Cambodia is a still deeply scarred by Pol Pot's holocaust. More than a million people may have died during his reign. The Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot were at the heart of the circumstances which brought the USA into the Vietnam War - one of the cruellest of the Cold War disputes. This feature paints a picture of a people still struggling to forget the devastation of Pot's own special brand of social reform. Mental illness is rife and neighbour still fears neighbour. Cambodia: POL POT THE INTERVIEW AND CONFESSION (1of2)[KH&EN] MANY of Khmer/Cambodian victims, who are living in the Western Countries happily, peacefully and harmoniously, whose human rights are well-protected, bitterly are misled to hate each other, especially to hate Pol Potists and his Khmer Rouge (not Yuon Rouge) in their guts. Pol Pot had to shoulder all the bitterest blames from all eight directions. Do remember without his real human guts, Cambodia would be gradually disappeared on the World Map under Yuon Angkar land plunderers. The world, the Vietnamese crocodile leaders and Cambodian people keep accusing Pol Pot who had committed crimes against humanity after Cambodia was liberated (Invasion) by Vietnamese aggressive forces in 1979. From 1979-1991, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge forces were busy fighting against the Vietnamese occupation and invasion of Cambodia. So Pol Pot was completely out of contact. The people in the outside world could not contact Pol Pot for the killing fields, which was committed by the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979. After the world and Cambodian people, have learned the clearest confession of Pol Pot as if they have just waken up from their long sleep in bed, are so proud of him who did this job for his country was to bring Cambodia out of darkness to the outside world that Cambodia was completely concealed by her neighbours. Cambodia is but a small country, but its history since 1968 demands wider attention. That's right, Cambodia desperately demands wider attention from the outside world. Cambodia was the oldest nation in South East Asia, was little known to the outside world since French colonialism in 1863. Cambodia was always kept in darkness like the Angkor Wat in the jungles. Therefore, Thais always claimed Angkor Wat that was belonged to them. Yuon always are trying every means to conceal their dirty-poisonous-pogrom plans against us-Khmers from the world. But thank to Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge who perfectly destroyed Yuons' dirty plans of Indochinese Federation/ Communist Party, was created by the murderous Ho Chi Minh in 1930, whose last evil wish was to incorporate Kampuchea Krom, Khmer Kandal and Laos into Vietnamese domination/rule. And there were/are many Killing Field Regimes, which were committed by Yuon again and again and over and over in both Khmer Kandal and Khmer Krom. Why, my dearest compatriot Khmers? The people in the outside world know nothing about Yuons' dirty pogrom plans against us-Khmers! It's unbelievable, if we are not Khmers! But it always happens to us-Khmers for century after century! Our land is getting smaller and smaller now! Pol Pot who was a great man on earth dared sacrifice his life to face Yuon imperialism, hegemonism and neo-colonialism. Pol Pot wasn't afraid of being strongly condemned by his own people and the world. One thing that he was really afraid of losing Cambodia to Yuon's hands. Now the world and Cambodians seem to have just waken up when Pol Pot gave his confessions (an uncut version would be great) that he didn't kill his own people, but the killing fields were carried on by Vietnamese agents everywhere in Cambodia from 1975-1979. Many people in the world always say that Pol Pot was a coward when he and his Khmer Rouge were busy fighting against the Vietnamese troops' occupation and invasion of Cambodia. But when the right time came up in 1997/98, Pol Pot had appeared on every channels of the world to clearly confess about what he did in the past from 1975-1979. Cambodia: POL POT THE INTERVIEW AND CONFESSION (2of2)[KH&EN] Khmer proverb: "When Nokor has war, needs only a hero to do his job (Hean si hean song. Do not need chicken/coward/rubbish mouths); when Nokor has peace, need only educated men to rebuild their country with their knowledge/specialist/professional." Cambodian History was read by Radio Free Asia Cambodian worker: [According to political analysts of Cambodian right and left wings as well as moderates who knew in 1950s that Kampuchea would not have security because Khmer neighbours wanted Cambodians to do what are being told to do. Otherwise a government of each regime would encounter stirring up a political instability in the country. Samdech Norodom Sihanouk used to say that he was so worried about the present of Vietcong jungle troops and their activities. Khmer Rouge leaders like Pol Pot, Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan, who are also so worried about the influence of Hanoi. This is speaking of Ieng Sary in 1978: In 1930, Yuon formed an "Indochinese Communist Party", whose goal was to create "Indochinese Federation of Yuon" for Baraingse instead. These three countries in this Federation are controlled by Yuon. As for Khieu Samphan has the same view about this federation.] Look at Pol Pot's face; is he really a cruel man as the Vietnamese crocodile leaders, the world and Cambodians always called him? In fact, the real brutal mass murderers are all but Yuon secret agents who had secretly impersonated themselves as the leaders of the super-illiterate-ignorant Khmer Rouge soldiers and former cruel bandits who brutally killed so many million Cambodian gentle-innocent people at their free will in the name of the murderous Yuon Angkar Leur/Cap Tren. Pol Pot was so different. He thought of the national interests in front him. When he died, his body was cremated with many old car tyres unfairly. He loved his nation but his nation didn't love him. He would rather see his nation condemned him to death than letting his nation swallowed up by the Yuon crocodile leaders and the Siamese 6-century cancers. He felt so regretful that he didn't have many experiences during his rule from 1975-1979. Pol Pot and his other Khmer Rouge leaders didn't check up every angle of their nation properly in the countryside to see whether their people received enough food and medicines or not? The world and Cambodian people didn't know who were wearing the secret black balaclavas behind the killing fields from 1975-1979. So they keep accusing Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge for killing their own gentle-innocent people. When he clearly confessed to the world and his Khmer children about Vietnamese dirty plans against Khmers. His words really stunned and turned the world upside down to stake a big bar/stick into Vietnamese leaders' rectums in Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities ordered their police to collect English Newspapers in every hotel to be burnt to ash because they felt shameful when they read those articles were revealed by Pol Pot. Pol Pot purely sacrificed his life to protect Cambodia from being wiped out on the World Map. He didn't even tell his own family that he had joined with the Vietnamese Communist Party to liberate his country from the imperialist Yankees. Why...? Because he was so afraid of Vietnamese agents and Cambodian Government who would kidnap his family as hostages. Not only that, if he was a real mass murderer of killing too many million of his own people. Why did he let his own family die in agony like that, too? Before his sister, who died in 2005, told us Khmer victims that she had greatly suffered under her brother, Pol Pot's regime too. And many other Khmer Rouge leaders such as Khieu Sampan and Prince Norodom Sihanouk also lost some of their children and many close relatives of theirs, too. Do we all Khmers think that Pol Pot was a traitor of his country? Why did he let his own people and the world condemn him injustice just like that? Was he a real butcher of his own people like that? The real hidden answers will be clearly revealed to the world soon when all Khmer Rouge leaders/cadres are brought on trial in Phnom Penh. Cambodian Genocide - Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge The photographs of the victims from the Cambodian genocide are what really haunt you. There's a huge discussion of this topic on my blog, http://www.vagabonding.com/travelogue/000060.html Here's an entry I wrote about this: Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and Genocide in Cambodia During their three-year, eight-month, and 21-day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in modern history: - The entire population of Cambodia's urban areas was evacuated from their homes and forced to march into rural areas to work the fields. - Every man, woman, and child was forced into slave labor for 12-15 hours each day. - An estimated two million people (21% of Cambodia's population) lost their lives. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease. That these crimes were committed so recently (1975-1978) makes them all the more sickening. The country's scars are still plainly visible: - The population is suspiciously youthful (50% is under the age of 15). - The economy is in shambles. This is partially thanks to the Khmer Rouge's execution of the upper and educated classes. The fact that they destroyed most of the vehicles and machines in the cities can't have helped. - New human remains turn up around the exhumed mass graves of the Killing Fields of Cheoung Ek on a daily basis. Silent reminders of the tragedy, these bones and teeth are ceremoniously placed into makeshift shrines in tree hollows and cement planters. It's hard to comprehend the motivations behind an atrocity like the Cambodian genocide. What could have been going through the minds of the Khmer Rouge officers and their leader Pol Pot? "Hey Pol, I've got an idea, man. Let's turn the country upside down and get real primitive. Evacuate all the cities, march everyone out to the country. And then start farming, man! Big time. And if anyone resists, let's execute them. In fact, let's kill a whole lot of people. I'm talking hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. And do it real cruel-like. Bash their heads against trees, electrocute 'em, drown 'em in vats of cold water..." Fear must have been the prevailing motivator in the regime. How could an officer commit such monstrous crimes against his own countrymen? For fear that something even worse would happen to him. The Khmer Rouge atrocity seems to follow a time-honored recipe for genocide: the obsessive desire to reach a religious or political ideal coupled with a healthy dose of madness. Why don't we learn? It seems as if past atrocities of genocide haven't served as a warning, but instead as a blueprint for how to repeat them. But if history has proven human beings to be intrinsically fallible, it has also proven us to be extraordinarily resilient. Pol Pot cast a heavy shadow over Cambodia, but the people have managed to persevere, begin anew, and find joy in life again. -- If you'd like to learn more about the genocide in Cambodia, visit the Yale Cambodian Genocide Project at http://www.yale.edu/cgp/. Cambodia: POL POT WAS USED TO DESTROY YUON BEEHIVES(1/2)[EN] POL POT, Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan who purely sacrificed their lives for protecting their country from being wiped out on the World Map like Kampuchea Krom and Champa. They also know Cambodians can procreate more children to rebuild their country once again after the war. But they know very well that once Cambodia is wiped out on the World Map, it's simply hard to regain the lost lands from our hereditary enemies. And they the Three Ghosts would also rather have their names strongly to be condemned by their own people and the people around the world than their country being wiped out on the World Map. Khmer proverb: When Nokor has war, needs only a hero to do his job (Hean si hean song. Do not need chicken/coward/rubbish mouths); when Nokor has peace, need only educated men to rebuild their country with their knowledge/specialist/professional. Without their bad names were used against Yuon Hanoi communist dictatorial leaders to drag Cambodia out of the dark ages; did the world know about our tiny country-Cambodia? Do the people in the outside world know about Kampuchea Krom too? According to political analysts of Cambodian right and left wings as well as moderates who knew in 1950s that Kampuchea would not have security because Khmer neighbours wanted Cambodians to do what are being told to do. As for Khieu Samphan has the same view about this federation. The paper soon acquired a reputation in Phnom Penh's small academic circle. The following year, the government closed the paper, and Sihanouk's police publicly humiliated Khieu by undressing and photographing him in public - as Shawcross notes, "not the sort of humiliation that men forgive or forget." Yet the experience did not prevent Khieu from advocating cooperation with Sihanouk in order to promote a united front against United States activities in South Vietnam. As mentioned, Khieu Samphan, Hou Yuon, and Hu Nim tried to "work through the system" by joining the Sangkum and by accepting posts in the prince's government. Hardliners like Pol Pot, Ieng Sary, and Son Sen advocated resistance. In addition, Pol Pot wanted to break up the "enemy spy organizations" that allegedly were based in the urban areas. The one important working class group in pre-revolutionary Cambodia—laborers on large rubber plantations—traditionally had consisted mostly of Vietnamese emigrants and thus was politically suspect. Armed forces units personally loyal to Pol Pot, known as the "Unconditional Divisions," were a privileged group within the military. Given the severity of their revolutionary ideology, it is surprising that the highest ranks of the Khmer Rouge leadership exhibited a talent for cronyism that matched that of the Sihanouk-era elite. Pol Pot's wife, Khieu Ponnary, was head of the Association of Democratic Khmer Women and her younger sister, Khieu Thirith, served as minister of social action. These two women are considered among the half-dozen most powerful personalities in Democratic Kampuchea. Son Sen's wife, Yun Yat, served as minister for culture, education and learning. Several of Pol Pot's nephews and nieces were given jobs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of Ieng Sary's daughters was appointed head of the Calmette Hospital although she had not graduated from secondary school. A niece of Ieng Sary was given a job as English translator for Radio Phnom Penh although her fluency in the language was extremely limited. Family ties were important, both because of the culture and because of the leadership's intense secretiveness and distrust of outsiders, especially of pro-Vietnamese communists. For Sihanouk, as for the rest of the world, the true character of Angkar was now, at least in part, revealed. Throughout its existence the Cambodian communists movement had been intensive secretive. Before 1975 its leaders had seen this as necessary for the party's survival. Once in power, Pol Pot and his close associates relied on secrecy to consolidate their position against those they judged internal enemies. The revelation of the party's existence in 1977 reflected, in part at least, pressure from china on its clients to acknowledge their true political identity at a time when they depended on Peking for assistance against Vietnam. In mid-1975, a series of border clashes erupted between Cambodian and Vietnamese forces. Cambodia: POL POT WAS USED TO DESTROY YUON BEEHIVES(2/2)[EN] In mid-1975, a series of border clashes erupted between Cambodian and Vietnamese forces. Each side blamed the other for initiating the conflicts, which occurred even as Hanoi defended the Pol Pot regime against international criticism of atrocities inside Cambodia. Border fighting increased in 1977, according to some reports. In June of that year, Vietnam proposed negotiations to settle the border dispute, but the Khmer Rouge said negotiations would be premature. In December, Cambodia accused Vietnam of aggression, demanded withdrawal of its troops from the country, and severed diplomatic ties. In February 1978, Hanoi called for an immediate end to all hostile military activities in the border region and for the conclusion of a peace treaty. At the same time, Hanoi denied the allegations that it had been trying to incorporate Cambodia into an Indochinese federation, adding that Vietnam had not entertained the idea of federation since the ICP was dissolved in 1951. The Pol Pot regime continued to claim, however, that Vietnam had never abandoned the idea of a federation, and the regime called on Hanoi to cease activities aimed at overthrowing the Government of Democratic Kampuchea. But on the international scene, Hanoi Communist leaders were so happy to have Pol Pot's name showing up to the world. Since then there were two Pol Pots. The first Pol Pot was Yuon secret agents who brutally killed Cambodians at its free will every day and night on the genocide orders of the first Yuon Angkar Leur/Cap Tren. This Pol Pot, whose brain was all but Yuon secret agents who had been hiding and waiting patiently for a unique golden opportunity in Cambodian jungles since 1945/46. The second Pol Pot, whose brain is real Khmer, and whose name was used to protect Samdech Euv Sihanouk and his royal families who were staying in Royal Palace while nearly all Cambodian innocent people had been secretly murdered in every province and district in the name of the first Pol Pot and the first Yuon Angkar Leur/Cap Tren as Yiey Tien clearly describes about Yuon Vietcong who tried to secretly impersonate themselves by using all Cambodian names instead of Yuon names: 1. Third Group of Khmer Rouge Soldiers who volunteered to destroy the feudalists and imperialists. (Feudalists are mean to kill all Cambodian high-ranking officers/officials, mandarins...etc. Imperialists are mean to kill all Cambodian educated men, intellectuals, professors, engineers, doctors...etc.) Most of their leaders, who are all but Yuon stealing to fake their names as Khmer, at present returning to their bases everywhere in the jungles in Cambodia by using the Khmer Rouge's names. 2. The Fourth Group of Forwarding Children who volunteered to destroy the Khmer Rouge. This group, which is at age of 18 to 25 only in 1993, as far as I know today there are 25,000 men. 3. Fifth Group of young intellectuals who are Yuon nationalities stealing to impersonate themselves as Cambodians by using all Khmer names. 4. Sixth Group of Khmer-Islam. This group is very cruel. 5. Seventh Group consisting of 60,000 men hiding secretly, named "The Mysterious Support Revolutionary Group or Krom Aat Kambang Bong Ek Padevat". Cambodian puppets spends a lot of money, each day million riels to feed this group is the Mysterious Murderers' Group, which is used in the future. In his criticism of the left, Sihanouk made clear that he knew Hanoi continued to shelter Cambodian communists. He probably did not know just how many were in Vietnam, and certainly would have been unaware in 1965 that one of them was the future Pol Pot, still at this stage working closely with the Vietnamese. As Sihanouk commanded, that Cambodia gave only moral support to the Vietnamese communists when the entire world knew that huge quantities of rice were smuggled to them from Cambodia. Some Khmer Rouge leaders simply thought that they could use the Vietnamese and Chinese communists to usurp the power in place. In the foreword of his recent book "Recent History of Cambodia and My Successive Standpoints," Khieu Samphan declared: "When Third World countries are threatened by colonial re-conquest, the forced choice was either the submission to imperialism, or the rallying with the communist camp and dictatorship..." Clearly, the same scenario had been planned for Cambodia, but the frantic nationalism of the Khmer Rouge was blocking Hanoi. Aha! Pol Pot was completely destroying Hanoi's schemes on time.
