Pripyat Ghost Town - Elena Filatova Esta ciudad es conocida porque sufrió el peor accidente de la historia de la energía nuclear el 26 de abril de 1986 cuando se produce el sobrecalentamiento y explosión del reactor número 4 de la planta nuclear de Chernobyl, el cual emitió 400 veces más radiación que la bomba atómica que cayó sobre Hiroshima en 1945, por lo que la ciudad se vio afectada por la radiación y debió ser evacuada. La evacuación fue llevada a cabo en tan solo tres horas por el ejército ruso, cuando la mayoría de los habitantes fueron desalojados de sus casas contra su voluntad, y los animales domésticos y de ganado fueron sacrificados. Fue fundada en 1970 para dar hogar a los trabajadores de la central nuclear de Chernobyl y a sus familias. Debido a su estratégica posición geográfica en un clima relativamente templado y un suelo muy fértil, la ciudad comenzó a desarrollarse, convirtiéndose en una de las zonas más agradables para vivir en toda la antigua URSS. Debido a eso, la población en sólo 16 años creció hasta más de 40.000 personas. Actualmente no tiene ningún habitante, más que investigadores, científicos y fuerzas de seguridad que custodian la zona de exclusión. La ciudad es ahora un museo de la era soviética tardía, tiene muchos edificios de apartamentos, dentro de los cuales se encuentran abandonadas fotografías, juguetes de niños, ropa, objetos personales, etc. También hay restaurantes, plazas de juego, hospitales, escuelas y gimnasios que también fueron abandonados. Debido al inexistente mantenimiento de las construcciones, dentro de ellas el moho, hongos e incluso plantas han crecido gracias a la humedad producida al derretirse la nieve de invierno. Por una larga carretera completamente vacía se llega al puesto de control de la zona de seguridad de 30 kilómetros cuadrados resguardada por el ejército alrededor del área del accidente. El terreno que rodea al antiguo reactor está cercado también por un nuevo perímetro de 10 kilómetros cuadrados, que es donde se considera que hay mayor contaminación. Pripyat era una ciudad de unos 50.000 habitantes, que alojaba a los trabajadores de la planta nuclear de Chernobyl, quienes fueron evacuados días después del accidente, el día de la explosión el viento evitó que la nube radioactiva acabase con todos sus habitantes. En la zona de 30 kilómetros alrededor del reactor había unas 94 aldeas y las ciudades de Pripyat y Chernobyl. Actualmente, tras la masiva evacuación de la población, sólo queda un puñado de aldeas y la pequeña urbe de Chernobyl, donde hay unas 7.000 personas, es decir, menos de 5% de lo que había hace 20 años. La ciudad quedó totalmente suspendida, una muestra de ello es que aún se encuentran símbolos comunistas en los panoramas, por ejemplo, en la casa de voto, todavía están las urnas y los carteles que se mostrarían el 1 de mayo. Sobre el edificio de gobierno, aún están los escudos de la URSS y de la República Socialista Soviética de Ucrania; e incluso partes del himno de la URSS escritas en un edificio. Se estima que la zona no será habitable hasta dentro de varios siglos por las concentraciones de elementos radioactivos. Prácticamente cualquier persona puede entrar a la ciudad pero es recomendable llevar un dosímetro y no quedarse de noche. Las puertas y ventanas han sido abiertas para reducir el riesgo a los visitantes. Pero pese a esta situación, hay quienes han regresado a sus antiguas casas viejas y haciendo caso omiso de los peligros en la zona, han vuelto a cultivar el suelo.
