Shipping Containers Recycled as Homes Architects are designing modern homes from the millions of excess shipping containers that are piling up at the port of LA due to the US trade deficit with China. By using the steel shipping containers as building material, homes can save 50% of construction costs, while reducing the waste and blight caused by trying to store them. Tags: CNN recycling homes |

Running Your Engine on Recycled Veggie Oil CHEN: And vegetable oil can be used in diesel car engines as a cheaper and greener alternative to fossil fuel. It is fast growing in popularity among Australians. Here is the story of a DIY biofuel user. STORY: For Sean Wright from Berowra in northern Sydney, Australia, fueling his car is not a matter of visiting his local petrol station. Instead, he fills his car up at home with an unlikely alternative --vegetable oil. With a little know-how, making the switch to vegetable oil is a relatively easy process. Wright filters his oil in barrels, then converts the filter in his engine. Wright says vegetable oil runs more smoothly and quietly than diesel. When he needs more, he simply visits his local restaurant or fish and chip shop to pick up their unwanted oil. [Sean Wright, DIY Biofuel User]: "It's cheaper so I can get the vegetable oil from the restaurants-- they don't want it so they give it to me for for free. There is quite a lot of effort involved with the filtering and the conversion of the vehicle but there's a number of reasons and the environmental side is definitely one of them." Robert Fyvie from the Biofuel Users Association in Australia says he's noticed a rise in the number of people using vegetable oil and bio-diesel. [Robert Fyvie, Biofuel Users Association]: "Particularly in the last month, there has been a lot more interest in bio-fuels as peak oil is hitting and the price of oil is going up." However the carbon emissions saved through the use of biofuel can be offset if forests are cut down to make way for biofuel crop plantations. [Mark Disendorf, Environmental Studies Lecturer]: "Overseas in Indonesia and Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia they are clearing vast areas of jungle and planting palm trees so they can produce lots of biodiesel for the European market from palm oil. But this is really devastating. Clearing the jungle not only destroys the biodiversity, the animal life and plant life but it also produces very big amounts of greenhouse gas emissions so this is not an ecologically sustainable pathway." It seems for the moment, though, biofuel is certainly sustainable at a local level, like Wright's. The oil he uses is waste, and was going to be thrown out anyway, so he can drive happy knowing he is helping reduce his carbon footprint. Recycled Plastics for Fuel : DigInfo DigInfo - (http://movie.diginfo.tv) At 2008 New Environmental Exhibition, Repla which stands for Recycled Plastics, displayed their new fuel source that is made from recycled plastics, cooking oils, wood chips and other materials that were previously regarded as non-recyclable. This new fuel source was developed with the intention of insulating industry from the volatile fluctuations in the price of traditional fuels, as well as to alleviate the dependancy on these fuel sources. The fuel is intended for farmers and industrial use and provides almost the same energy as crude oil at a price 60% lower than oil. A special pellet burner system is required when using these new fuels. This is except for the PDF emulsion fuel which can be used with regular oil burners. Chilean Scientists Develop Recycled Rice ANCHOR: With the global food crisis deepening, one team of Chilean scientists has developed a new kind of rice with some special qualities. Let's take a look. STORY: The new rice is created by polishing rice discards - that used to be used as animal food. According to the Chilean scientists, the new rice requires less energy for production than standard rice, but has the same physical and chemical characteristics. [Laura Almendares, University of Santiago]: "Among the aimed objectives was first, the ability to generate a usefulness, and after, the ability to improve the profitability for the farmers and the enabling of generating a rice that would compete with more standard rice, those were the biggest initial objectives." The scientists say the reconstituted rice needs roughly half the time it takes to prepare standard rice, and uses only a fourth of the water. In a world with an estimated 100 million people living in hunger, this may be one source of relief. But Almendares says there's no quick fix for the global food shortage. [Laura Almendares, University of Santiago]: "It's worth pointing out that the food shortage isn't going to go away for at least 10 to 15 years, and that this product aims to complement the production of rice. It′s not intended to be a substitute, but to complement the production related to response of the decrease in rice offerings." But the reconstituted rice already has a growing fan-base of Chilean homemakers. [Belen Fernandez, Homemaker, Santiago]: "Yes, it′s good, it′s healthy, it's got a good flavor, it′s more economical, obviously it can have a good entrance onto the market, because prices are really really high." And as far as taste goes, the polishing process needed to create the rice allows for additional flavoring, like meat, onion, and garlic. So far in trials the meat version has been the most successful. Tags: ntd Chilean Scientists Recycled Rice global food crisis University Santiago |

Clothes made from Recycled Fabric http://mandateofheavenclothing.com I've been thinking a lot about clothing lately. I think there is a big potential for the whole clothing experience to be re-invented so we don't have to hurt the environment and humanity so much. Instead of always using new fabric and shipping clothes made in sweat shops by little kids all over the world a very different approach can be taken. One major step in the right direction is what a friend of a friends clothing line is up to. Mandate of Heaven makes their clothes from recycled fabric. And they distribute their clothes primarily locally which cuts down on shipping and packaging pollution. They're also all very expressive clothes which gives the person wearing them a strong individuality and uniqueness which helps break out of the manufactured mindset of manufactured clothes. I was invited to check out their show and decided to bring my camera. Then I couldn't help myself and wanted to edit their show into a video with music by one of my favorite local bands 'Forest Fire' who I've posted a performance by in the past. http://myspace.com/fuckforestfire Here is the complete list of lovely models: Paige Wood, Sophia Casanova, Montana Queler, Valerie Ponelli, John Lustig, Claudia Lopez, Rachel Antonoff, Sarah Moran, Noelle Lynch, Jessica Gallucci, Alexa Weir, Lisa Goodwin, Eugina Williams, Alia Shawkat, Maria Christina, Brissi, Ying Li, Sara Copeland, Carissa Ackerman. For more info about the models visit the Mandate of Heaven MySpace Profile. http://www.myspace.com/mandate_of_heaven There is also a flickr photo set from the show. http://www.flickr.com/photos/angellus... Technical Notes about making this video: I shot on the HVX-200 with all default settings in terms of gama and color manipulation. The recording setting was at 720 60p and the Scene setting was put to 'film cam' rather then what I normally shoot on which is 'video cam'. Then while shooting I took into consideration everything getting slowed down and did some more radical camera work that I otherwise wouldn't have done. I tried to run around a lot and get different angles. Then I captured the footage into FCP using Log and transfer. Because I shot on 'Film Cam' the 60 frames per second that were recorded played back at 23.98 which is the beautiful slowmotion you see in the video. I then proceeded to slow the footage down even further to 50 percent and sometimes 25 percent. I did this by clicking the clip and then hitting "apple J" and then typing in the speed that I wanted it to be. Normally I avoid frame blending but in this case it gave it a nice dreamy blur that I like so I used it on almost every shot. Then I used WireTap Pro to record the forest fire song off their myspace profile. I set the software to record the computer audio at 48Khz with no compression and then brought that music into FCP. Then I downloaded some elements from my website like the earth and the pattern and dragged those from my desktop to the FCP timeline in order to have a background for my graphics. Then I color corrected by crushing the blacks, lowering the whites and boosting the mids. Also dragging the color temperature towards blue as needed for each shot. Then I used compressor to export to web and chose the iPod 640 by 480 preset and then uploaded to YouTube. Then I hopped over here and wrote the blog post in my wordpress blog and next will export the video in the Apple TV codec and then use tubemogul to post that across my various video services including blip.tv which makes this video available in iTunes and Miro in HD quality. This video is under a sharalike creative commons license so anyone can re-edit and re-post with a similar license provided they link to the designer and to myself. Question for commenters: How else do you think the clothing experience can be re-invented? Tags: fashion week new york city 2008 |
