In May 2006 the Budapest Operetta Theatre prepares for a real world premier: The new work of two prominent authors of the American continent, Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy, a new write up of the Rudolf comes as first to this stage. In co-production with the Vereinigte Bühnen from Vienna (the owners of the Ronacher, Raimund musical theatres, the copyright holder of Elisabeth and Mozart!) and the Open Air Theatre Szeged this performance is a real rarity, since the story and music are formed in an ative common work in co-production with the authors and a producers from Vienna and the Hungarian director, Miklós Gábor Kerényi. The story of the performance isn't unfamiliar to the Hungarian public: it tells the passionate, romantic and tragically ending relation of the crown prince, Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, with dramatic music and great hits. Frank Wildhorn, the composer of the show made his name on Broadway a decade ago with "Jekyll and Hyde", the show that was a huge success not only in New York but in the UK and Hungary as well. Mr. Wildhorn started his carrier in pop music, writing songs like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" for the young Whitney Houston that instantly made him a superstar songwriter, and the song a number-one hit. He has worked with celebrities like Liza Minelli, Natalie Cole, Sammy Davis,Jr., and introduced Linda Eder to millions of musical fanatics. The librettist, Jack Murphy has worked on a wide variety of projects as both lyricist and composer, he has written librettos for several Wildhorn-projects, too. Collaborating with Frank Wildhorn, he wrote lyrics for Linda Eder's EMI CD "And So Much More", as well as songs on her Atlantic CD's "It's Time, It's No Secret Anymore", "Christmas Stays The Same", and "Gold". Jack has written one of the songs, "The Rainbow's End", on Linda's Judy Garland tribute CD For EMI. Koen Schoots the Musical Supervisor of the show was the supervising musical director of Jekyll and Hyde, too. He worked as a conductor at the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin, founded his own CD production company "MusicalNet" and opened his recording studio. Besides Frank Wildhorn's work he conducted the West Side Story, the Rock Opera Gormenghast, Sweeney Todd and recorded the German Original Recording of Romeo&Juliet. The cast members were chosen from hundreds of candidates. The title role of Rudolf is played by the most popular and most acknowledged musical star of the "Budapest Broadway", Attila Dolhai. The musical Rudolf is based on real events of european history: it tells a story of passion and romance, the tragic relationship of Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, accompanied by a strongly dramatic musical score. The young Rudolf meets the 17 year old baroness in the moment when everything is about to collapse around him. His political and human conflict with his father, Emperor Franz Joseph, becomes obviously irreconcilable, he is surrounded by denouncers everywhere, his relation with his wife is unhappy, and on top of all that, the Hungarians expect him to solve the crises of the Monarchy. Rudolf feels to be in a trap, he is incapable to override his limits - and as a salvation, the love arrives into his life, sweeping away everything. The secret liaison doesn't escape Taaffe's, the prime minister's attention, who is anxious to hinder Rudolf's political and private life success from this moment. Born 19 April 1926 in Philadelphia, USA Died 21 June 2002 in Baltimore. USA Newsweek once called Berl Senofsky a "giant of a man...an American musical hero of Bunyanesque proportions." Consistently praised for the warmth and beauty of his tone, breathtaking virtuosity, and impeccable musicianship, Berl Senofsky's artistry has won him the boundless admiration of his colleagues and audiences alike. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, the son of violinists, Mr. Senofsky received his first music lessons from his father at the age of three. By the time he was six, he had won a scholarship to study with Louis Persinger. At the age of twelve he received a scholarship to the Juilliard School to study with Ivan Galamian, with whom he remained for twelve years. Following military service in World War II, Senofsky made his New York recital debut as the winner of the coveted Walter Naumberg Award. Shortly thereafter, he appeared as a soloist for the first time with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1955, Berl Senofsky became the first— and only—American violinist to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition. Since then, he has become a permanent member of the jury for the Belgian competition. Mr. Senofsky has performed regularly on the international concert circuit. In the United States, he has played with the New York Philharmonic, the American Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh, among others. His schedule has also taken him to Europe, South America, and the Far East. In addition to extensive touring, recording, and teaching duties at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Mr. Senofsky was the founder and prime mover of the American Artists International Foundation, Inc. Established to help prepare young American musicians for international competitions, the organization has made it possible for American violinists to participate in the Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 1983, Mr. Senofsky was invited by the director of the Shanghai Conservatory to start a new school of violin playing; he remained in the People's Republic of China for three months giving master classes and performances. Rudolf Serkin - Beethoven, Sonata No. 26 "Les Adieux" Rare video of Rudolf Serkin. Rudolf Serkin (March 28, 1903 -- May 8, 1991) was a Bohemian-born pianist. He was born in Cheb (Eger), Bohemia (now Czech Republic) to a Russian-Jewish family. Hailed as a child prodigy, Serkin was sent to Vienna at the age of nine, where he studied piano with Richard Robert and, later, composition with Joseph Marx making his public debut with the Vienna Philharmonic at 12. From 1918 to 1920 he studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg and participated actively in Schoenberg's Society for the Private Performance of Music. He began a regular concert career in 1920, living in Berlin with violinist Adolf Busch and his family, which included a then three-year-old daughter Irene, whom Serkin would marry 15 years later. Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, Serkin performed throughout Europe both as soloist and with Busch and the Busch Quartet. With the rise of the Nazi party in Germany, Serkin and the Busches left Berlin for Switzerland. In 1933 Serkin made his first United States appearance at the Coolidge Festival in Washington, DC, where he performed with Adolf Busch. In 1936 he launched his solo concert career in the U. S. with the New York Philharmonic under Arturo Toscanini. The critics raved, describing him as "an artist of unusual and impressive talents in possession of a crystalline technique, plenty of power, delicacy, and tonal purity." Although Serkin himself admitted to having some problems with his octave technique, his technical foundation was generally solid.[1] In 1937, Serkin played his first New York recital at Carnegie Hall. Shortly after the onset of World War II in 1939, the Serkins and Busches emigrated to the United States, where Serkin taught several generations of pianists at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. From 1968 to 1976 he served as Director of the Curtis Institute. He lived with his large family first in New York, then in Philadelphia, as well as on a dairy farm in rural Guilford, Vermont. In 1951, Serkin and Adolf Busch founded the Marlboro Music School and Festival near Brattleboro, Vermont with the goal of stimulating interest in and performance of chamber music in the United States. He made many recordings (primarily with Columbia) from the 1940s into the 1980s, including one at RCA Victor of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in 1944, with the NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Toscanini. Serkin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 and in March, 1972 celebrated his 100th appearance with the New York Philharmonic by playing Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1. The orchestra also named Serkin an honorary member of the Philharmonic's Symphony Society of New York, an elite musical society that includes Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, and Paul Hindemith. In 1986, he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a guest artist with the orchestra. He is also regarded as one of the primary interpreters of the music of Beethoven in the 20th century. Revered as a musician's musician, a father figure to a legion of younger players who came to the Marlboro School and Festival, and a pianist of enormous musical integrity, he toured all over the world and continued his solo career and recording activities until illness prevented further work in 1989. He died of cancer, aged 88, at home on his Vermont farm. He and Irene were the parents of seven children (one of whom died in infancy), including pianist Peter Serkin.
