YouTube's role in the future of film - Sara Pollack Sara Pollack addressed in her presentation briefly what I hope will get a lot more attention in the future. Discovery tools. The most enticing thing to filmmakers that YouTube has is an audience base. But the reality is that often times amazing videos sit there with only 50 to 200 views. So I've been telling YouTube ever since Spencer Cooks in their PR department contacted us a year ago that they need to improve discovery tools on YouTube. They need to use your friends and the favorite tool to come up with a pool of videos a user is very likely to enjoy. The idea is that if your real friends liked it then you probably will too. Susan, Brian and I explained to Sara over lunch that then as you rate videos that your friends liked the software can learn which friends really have the same taste as you and friends who like really weird things that you never end up liking can stop influencing the suggestions to you. This is kind of like amazon and netflix but different because it's based on your friends rather then the entire population on the site. Thats the key thing that very few sites seem to understand just yet. The other thing we always tell youtube when ever we get someone listening to us is that the revenue needs to be higher and we think that can happen with a better user generated advertising echo-sphere. So instead of banners for products that take you to standard produced commercials, you could have videos made by real people and creative filmmakers that are inspired by a product and make an ad for it and submit that ad to the company. The company could then approve the ad at a certain price per view and then any other youtube show could use that video as an advertisement and get revenue for encouraging that ad to be viewed but also people would come to the video on their own accord if either it was really creative or if it was really informative. Then the company could also put it on their site and the more the video is utilized the more the person that made it gets paid. This way advertising on youtube won't be just for mainstream products but also for smaller more niche products and services. And advertising 101 tells us that targeted niche advertising is more profitable. But of course it's hard to manage such small business deals unless of course you are google and via the ad sense program they already know how to manage millions of niche advertisements. But in the end, for the record I don't think that the future of all content creation should be funded by ad revenue. I think it should be subscription services and maybe secondarily ad revenue. The reason why is eventually there will really be no way to interrupt a user even in the most subtle way like a banner popping in as the video plays. All of that stuff will be removed so the content industry shouldn't create a system where we rely on ad revenue. Sara Bareilles in San Francisco - Gravity I have to admit that when I went to see the Aqualung show at The Fillmore, I wasn't sure what to expect from the opener. Experience has shown that most of the time, these opening acts are just "okay", but nothing to get too excited about. Fact is, I had never even heard of Sara Bareilles before. So when she walked out alone onto the stage, I wasn't anticipating anything special. And then something amazing happened. She opened her mouth to sing...and this incredible voice softly drifted into my ears. I was stunned...blown away. I don't remember much about that first song, other than the way it caught me completely off guard. It was just a simple solo number, but I was mesmerized. Her band joined her onstage afterwards, and they proceeded to play a fantastic set. At one point, they performed an unbelievable cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". And before you know it, her set was over, and she was walking off the stage. But her music, and that incredible voice stayed with me through the next day. I couldn't even remember her name, but was able to find it by reading over the Aqualung Tour Diary. From there it was simple enough to find her web site ( http://www.sarabmusic.com ) and MySpace page ( http://www.myspace.com/sarabareilles ). And that's one of the wonderful things about music, and why I love to see a live show. Just when you think you've heard it all before. Just when you think there's nothing new or exciting to look forward to. That's when you make discoveries like this one, and find someone who touches you in a way that reminds you why you love music so much. This young woman is a real talent, and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her in the future. This was the final number of her set, and was filmed 10 May 2007 at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA. I almost didn't think to tape this song. I was so busy enjoying her set, I almost forgot to capture something to share later. I hope you enjoy the video, and although it sounds pretty good here, it does not begin to do justice to how she sounds live.
