Riz Khan - Schools killing creativity? - 10 Sep 08 - Part 1 Education is a terrible way to find out what you're good at. Sound strange, right? But think about this; how many of you are currently working in the subject you liked most in school. Not the one you excelled in, the one you liked. In our very streamlined public education system, children around the world are taught the maths and sciences, but how many of them are taught art, painting or dance with the same vigour? Christian ethics taught in Ukraine's public schools For the first time in 90 years, Ukrainian students have the option of studying Christian ethics in the public schools. Christian ethics for the school curriculum was an initiative proposed by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko shortly after the Orange Revolution in 2005. The program calls for voluntary participation and is supported by the leaders of Ukraine's largest Christian denominations. One Baptist church association, "Hope to People" of Rivne, Ukraine, sponsors teacher training at several "fellowship camps" throughout the year. In the summer of 2007, I attended one of these fellowship camps for teachers of Christian ethics as a public high school teacher from the USA. The camp was held at the Vodogray resort in the beautiful Carpathian Mountain region of western Ukraine. I asked the principal of a school in Kharkov: "Why is the culture and attitude toward religion of eastern and western Ukraine so different?" "It's not the same, eastern Ukraine and western Ukraine, because the western part of Ukraine was added to the Soviet Union later on, about 20 years. "And this is why they could keep their national culture and national language as well. "And they resisted the communists who pressured them so that people here might speak Russian only. "And the Ukrainian language was forbidden as a language at school and even as a language of common fellowship." Schools Hurting Over High Fuel Costs The high cost of diesel fuel is hurting local school districts with large bus routes. The North Kansas City School District covers 82 square miles and has 17,000 students. The cost of fuel in the 2007-2008 school year cost $940,000, compared to $455,000 in the 2004-2005 school year. School officials said the extra money is coming out of other supplies and services. The school board is expected to make some tough budget decisions to cover the fuel costs. KMBC checked with several other school districts on their fuel budget. Blue Springs Schools budgeted $650,000 for the school year, but the actual cost will be $760,000. Shawnee Mission budgeted $960,000 but they've already spent more than $1 million. And the Independence School District budgeted $400,000 for fuel, but they're actually spending $700,000. Scenes of devastation in China's schools ANCHOR: And now we have footage from the Chinese communist party's state television about the ongoing rescue efforts to pull children and staff from collapsed schools. STORY: Rescuers in Dujiangyan, pulled bodies from Xinjian Primary School. In this school alone, over 300 students and teachers were buried underground. China's state television said that rescue operations could take a long time. In the same city, about 900 teenagers were buried under a collapsed three-storey school building. At a second school in Dujiangyan, fewer than 100 of 420 students survived, Xinhua news agency reported. Chinese state television showed rescue operations in Dujiangyan where some students were pulled out of the rubble. But the school tragedy is not ending. In Hanwang county, rescue workers were pulling bodies out of another destroyed school. Over 200 students were buried. Dujiangyan, which is about midway between Chengdu and the epicentre, had scenes of devastation, with buildings reduced to rubble and bodies in the streets, some only partially covered. Heavy rainfall and wrecked roads hampered efforts to reach areas hardest-hit by China's worst earthquake in three decades.
