Wayne Shorter - Ponta De Areia Wayne Shorter, considerato da molti il "numero uno" del jazz contemporaneo, compositore statunitense fra i più stimati, sassofonista tenore e soprano originale come non pochi, viene definito dal pianista e tastierista Herbie Hancock come un essere umano evoluto a tal punto da essere in grado di sintetizzare tutta la storia del jazz in un'unica espressione musicale di grande peculiarità e vitalità, come nessun altro lo sa fare ai nostri giorni. Sebbene "Native Dancer", del quale mi occupo per far comprendere meglio il contesto in cui nacque la canzone "Ponta De Areia", rivestisse un grande valore personale, si trattava solo di un progetto isolato, durato un mese.Il lavoro principale era quello con i Weather Report: lui e Joe ne erano le fondamenta, e per tutti gli anni Settanta ressero le sorti della band come fosse un'azienda familiare. Wayne Shorter cominciò a flirtare con i ritmi brasiliani sin dai primi dischi per la Blue Note. Quando, nel 1966, conobbe la futura moglie Ana Maria (perita, purtroppo, in in incidente aereo nel 1996), cominciò per lui un corso intensivo, nonchè casalingo, di cultura portoghese e brasiliana che lo portò a tirar fuori un sound profondo e incisivo, al quale nessuno era preparato. "Native Dancer" non assomigliava per niente alla musica brasiliana conosciuta dagli americani. Sin dalle primissime note dell'album, faceva irruzione il falsetto più potente sulla faccia della terra. Una voce che non lasciava scelta: la amavi o la odiavi. Era sublime e arcana, o semplicemente inquietante e disincarnata. Apparteneva al cantante e compositore brasiliano Milton Nascimento: "Native Dancer", pubblicato nel 1974, era frutto della collaborazione tra lui e Wayne. Il disco rappresentava una dichiarazione d'amore al Brasile: all' "alegria" e alla "saudade", intraducibile termine portoghese che indica una malinconia pacificata, la presenza di un'assenza. In "Native Dancer" Wayne coniugò il jazz e le melodie di Milton in un sacro legame, al cui confronto le unioni coeve di jazz e Brasile, portate avanti da altri musicisti, erano semplici storie da una sola notte. Era il sound di un Wayne Shorter felice e rilassato, con una totale padronanza dello studio di registrazione, elemento fin troppo raro negli anni Settanta. Nondimeno, sarebbe stato il suo ultimo disco da solista fino al 1985. Il falsetto di Milton era favoloso nel registro acuto, ma possedeva anche una vastissima gamma timbrica in quello più grave. Diceva che era sempre più felice quando stava vicino all'oceano. Se i cantanti della Motown "ti annegano con la loro altezza", nelle parole di Wayne, sfiorando la cresta dell'onda, Milton si tuffava ottave al di sotto della superficie e usava il registro basso come spinta per risalire, sollevando e facendo scivolare sul suo falsetto chiunque si trovi ad ascoltarlo. C'era una buona ragione perchè si sentisse così attratto: lui usava il soprano allo stesso modo. Sin dalle prime battute di "Ponta De Areia", la voce di Milton imita il suono della brezza oceanica che onora con la sua presenza la regione interna del Minas. Il titolo del brano faceva riferimento al capolinea della linea ferroviaria che collega il Minas alla costa brasiliana. Anche se la melodia possedeva la qualità cantabile di una filastrocca, il suo sghembo 9/8 poteva essere difficile da eseguire. "Quando arrivammo a New York la prima volta", ha ricordato Milton, "volevano sentirmi suonare ed allora mi sedetti al piano e cominciai a suonare "Ponta De Areia". Alcuni musicisti presero i loro strumenti, ma nessuno di loro riusciva a seguire il ritmo. Arrivò Wayne. Gli parlai come non faccio mai. Gli dissi:"Questa canzone che sto suonando, la voglio sul disco. "Deve" essere la traccia d'apertura.Altrimenti me ne vado". Dovevo proprio essere fuori di me!". Sorridendo, Wayne osservò gli altri che si sforzavano di seguire la canzone e disse a Milton:"Sei davvero ingegnoso:sembra una canzone per bambini, ma nessun altro riesce a seguirti". Wayne gli diede retta e mise il brano all'inizio del disco. Concludendo si potrebbe dire che quando Wayne suonava, cantava; e allo stesso modo il canto di Milton possedeva una qualità strumentale. Avrei molto altro da scrivere, ma purtroppo You Tube mette un limite a 1000 parole.......fortunatamente, penserà qualcuno!!! Orpheus in the Underworld/ Final/Shorter Opera Theatre Shorter College Opera Theatre performs the final scene from Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld. Featuring Lenora Green as Eurydice. In this scene, Eurydice attends disguised as a bacchante, a follower of Bacchus, god of wine, but Pluto realises who she is and blocks Jupiter's path when Jupiter tries to make off with her. Jupiter again accuses Pluto of abducting Eurydice. When Orpheus and Public Opinion appear, Jupiter tells Orpheus he can take his wife away, but only if he does not look back at her as they go. When Orpheus fails this test, Pluto claims Eurydice. Jupiter, however, takes her away from Pluto by announcing that he is turning her into a real bacchante. Everyone, except Pluto and Public Opinion, is delighted and the operetta climaxes with the energetic Can-Can, danced by all the gods and goddesses.
