Sleep Disorder Clinic I spend the night at a sleep disorder clinic. Special thanks to YT user, Gary (gcifra) for talking to me at length and suggesting sleep studies to me to begin with. I had been thinking about doing one for years but our discussions here finally tipped the scales. I get the results back in three weeks. Teenager Who Can't Stay Awake - Rare Sleep Disorder Fox News Channel 10 (Phoenix) story about teenager Brendan, 19, who sleeps 12-16 hours at a time, and is asleep more than he's awake. Doctors struggle to figure out why. Sleep doctor Michael Breus comments on how sleep disorders are on the rise, and says there are between 85-88 identified sleep disorders at the time of this news story. Many of these disorders are mysterious, and doctors are still struggling to understand and treat them. In a nation where 1 out of 3 Americans are sleep-deprived and stay awake longer than they should, Brendan's sleep disorder is rare. How a Chronic Sleep Disorder Changed My Life Donna, 51, experienced her first symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS) as a teenager. Living in silence for years, she convinced herself that she was crazy: She didn't understand why she always had to move her legs, why she couldn't sleep at night, and why it was so hard to explain the feeling to other people. Sleep Disorder in Baby? Spasm? Rls? Leg Cramps, Can't sleep My son is 8 months old now, and has been a terrible sleeper since he was born, seemed very uncomfortable in his own body, he was hospitalized when he was a few weeks old and they figured out he had GERD reflux which has been treated with LOSEC and he seems better in that regard, but the sleeping habits are worse in the last few weeks. Alot of tests were done a few months ago and all were negative, we are waiting to go to a sleep clinic so they can do a sleep study on him, thought I would take a shot and see if anyone out there has any ideas as to what could help if maybe this reminds them of their child. These are the things we have tried and what we do each and every night before he goes to sleep for anywhere from 1-3 hours. He will wake up like a newborn still everyone 2-3 hours to eat, sometimes wakes right up from his legs like the video (this is 4am) sometimes can get back to sleep with minor massaging. 1. Swaddle him to keep him somewhat still 2. Heating pads under and on top of his legs 3. Advil on really bad nights (doesnt seem to help at all) 4. Deep Massage or patting 5. Warm Bath During the day he seems happy, his hands and feet are always in constant motion, and he always seems very tense, like his muscles are flexed all over but it doesn't seem to bother him as bad as when he is trying to sleep, nap time is the same- pretty hard. My husband and I are usually sweating by the time he's asleep, and if we stop massaging his legs/feet before they have stopped moving 100% you can almost see it move up his whole body, his toe wiggles then his ankle, then his knee, to his bum and if we don't touch him, he will sit right up (like the video) it is getting harder because he is getting bigger and stronger himself so harder to swaddle and massage all while keeping him rocking. Anyone have any ideas to try, or a guess as to what it looks like, please send me a message. Thank you! Sleep Disturbance Patients often present to ENT clinics with sleep disturbance. Their symptoms can include insomnia, interrupted sleep, interrupted sleep of the sleeping partner, poor energy levels and daytime sleepiness. The stages of sleep Sleep is divided into five stages. The first four are associated with deepening sleep, decreased muscle activity and slowed breathing and pulse rate. The fifth stage is reached when rapid eye movement occurs. It is in this stage that dreaming occurs. The fourth stage is the deepest form of sleep during which the patient is the least arousable. It is associated with delta waves on the electroencephalogram. How many people are affected? Sleep disorder, in its various forms, is very common. A third of adults report sleep disorder at some point in their lives. 20-40% of adults report sleep disorder at some time in the year. 17% rate their sleep disorder as serious. 20% of adults complain of chronic insomnia. Gender Sleep disorder is more common in women with a female:male ratio of 3:2. Men are more likely to have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). 4% of men have OSA compared with 2.5% in women. Age Sleep disturbance gets worse with age. In the 30 to 50 year old age group, 5% suffer. Over 50 years this rises to 30%. The elderly experience decrease sleeping periods, awake more often in the night and are more likely to take medications which disrupt sleep. Causes The causes of sleep disturbance can be split into medical, psychological and environmental problems. Medical problems These are myriad and include heart failure, neurological conditions, thyroid problems and other disorders of the hormone system, acid reflux from the stomach, stimulants (caffeine and alcohol), certain medications and upper airway obstruction. Psychological problems These include depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, thought disorder and psychiatric medication. Environmental problems Life-threatening events, shift-working, jet lag, changes in altitude, hot sleeping environment, environmental noise (e.g. snoring form the sleeping partner) or frequent external disturbance. Treatment Given the number of serious medical conditions that can cause sleep disturbance, patients should always consult their primary care doctor. Simple life-style changes may also help. Dietary modifications are not generally required but avoiding big meals and spicy foods 3 hours before bedtime helps. Stimulants and substances that disturb sleep architecture should be avoided. These include caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Nicotine and caffeine should be avoided from late afternoon onwards. Strenuous exercise is good during the day but should be avoided in the 3 hours before sleep. Psychologically stimulating activities should also be avoided including tense films, engrossing novels, thrilling TV and arguments. Tags: sleep medicine deep restful |
