Cash" gets the songwriting credit for "I Want to Go Home," in fact it's his version of the homesick sailor folk tale more commonly known as "Sloop John B," recorded elsewhere by the Weavers, the Kingston Trio, the Beach Boys, and others. Sloop John B - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Sloop John B" is the seventh track on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album and was also a single which was released in 1966 on Capitol Records. It was originally a traditional West Indies folk song, possibly recorded earliest by The Weavers under the title "Wreck of the John B", the song taken from a collection by Carl Sandburg (1927). Alan Lomax made a field recording of the song in Nassau, 1935, under the title "Histe Up the John B. Sail". This recording appears on the album Bahamas 1935: Chanteys And Anthems From Andros And Cat Island.[1] The song was adapted by Weavers member Lee Hays. The recording of the song which directly influenced The Beach Boys was by The Kingston Trio. The John B. was an old sponger boat whose crew were in the habit of getting notoriously merry whenever they made port. It was wrecked and sunk at Governor's Harbour in Eleuthera, the Bahamas, in about 1900.[citation needed] The song has been recorded by many artists, including The Calypso Bandits, Joseph Spence, Tom Fogerty, Roger Whittaker, Johnny Cash, Jimmie Rodgers, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dick Dale, Catch 22, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Relient K, Dan Zanes, and Okkervil River. Sloop JohnB: John Stewart & Nick Reynolds From Trio Fantasy Camp 4 in August of 2003, former Kingston Trio members John Stewart (L) and Nick Reynolds (R) perform an informal version of the song that appeared on the Trio's first album, recorded fifty years ago in February of 1958. "Sloop John B" came to the U.S from the Bahamas, where it had been heard by American poet Carl Sandburg and his friend, activist folksinger Lee Hays, whose group The Weavers recorded the first version of this song as a rollicking, uptempo calypso, very similar to what the Beach Boys did with it many years later. The Kingston Trio's version, however, was darker and slower, reflecting the nightmare qualities of the lyric - a night of drinking gone terribly bad, the hangover, jail. The second verse is sung from the audience by legendary folksinger Travis Edmondson, of Bud and Travis fame, a hero to both Reynolds and Stewart. John Stewart passed away in January of 2008. He leaves a legion of friends and admirers, and fifty years of great American music of unparalleled excellence. Nick Reynolds followed Stewart in death in October of the same year.
