Explosion - An improvised synth solo MooT BooXLe performing on the Synthesizers.com modular analogue synthesizer. This is not a perfect performance, as it was improvised in one go. Also functioning in this video are the Moogerfooger CP-251, the Roland Space Echo, and Reason drums. I was controlling the filter cutoff with a CV pedal. REMIX available NOW at www.myspace.com/mootbooxle !! Also, I wasn't looking at the camera, in case you were wondering. I was watching computer monitors, which were showing visual feedback on what I was playing. Thanks for watching!! Roland GR-700 Guitar Synth I've been meaning to do this for awhile. I scrolled thru some of the factory presets. I'm not really a guitar player but I got the GR-700 to do ambient textures and fat pads, etc. The GR-700 has the same synth engine as the JX-3P but has a more "organic" sound because each string can send pitch bend so you can get a really nice slight de-tuning. Two digitally controlled oscillators per string and a fat 24db analog filter. I used the G-707 guitar controller. The only effect was some delay from an Alesis Quadraverb. Electro-Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer Analog Synth i haven't seen any demos of the eh mini synth on youtube, so i thought it high time to put one up here. this thing is kind of like the edp wasp, though not quite as versatile. obviously i'm just noodling around, but this will give you a basic idea of some of the sounds this thing makes. pretty limited, but what it does do, it does quite well. also, you can get an idea of how the velocity sensitivity works on this thing. as a bonus, you can download a very detailed kontakt program of a big bass patch that i made with this synth by going here: http://www.twango.com/media/peahix.public/peahix.10025 for those interested, the controls are: top row sliders l-r: -pitch bend -sub octave -phase rate -sweep start freq -sweep stop freq -sweep rate -master volume bottom row switches: -octave -tune (recessed trim pot) -phase -sens. -2x filt. -q -power btw, the "phase rate" slider acts as a pwm lfo rate when the "phase" switch is in the up position, and acts as a continuously variable pulse waveform when the "phase" switch is in the down position. iPhone Synth It's very much like Propellerhead's ReBirth (remember that one?) and other step-sequencers. I tried to demonstrate how some of it works but my big sausage fingers +plus+ trying to face my MacBook's cam just proved more challenging than I thought. What's cool about it is that not only can you set each note in each step of the sequence, but the type of oscillator per note (ie square, sine or white noise for snares/claps), the volume of each step, and you've got 3 octaves to choose from. But that's not the best part - as shown in the video, it's using the iPhone's accelerometer to mess with the filters - the cutoff and resonance. Cwejman vco-2rm,AS modular synth VCO+LFO and TR-606 here in the video i did a simple patch using just the output of the ring modulator from the Cwejman vco-2rm, the Analogue Systems VCO controlled by the Analogue Systems LFO and on the other input is the Roland TR-606 drum machine, i really love the sound of the Cwejman ring modulator alone, no aditional effects were used, just the 3 eurorack modules and the tr-606. http://www.myspace.com/latinsizer http://www.latinsizer.com cwejman vco-2rm The Cwejman VCO-2RM has two independent full featured VCOs and a ring modulator. It has internal connections for sync and linear frequency cross modulation, and are also pre patched to the ring modulator. All these connections go through normalized jacks, so external signals can also be used. They deliver square and pulse waves, triangle, sine and four variants of ramp wave, each adding more over tones with a more nasal timbre. The VCOs can be switched to LFO mode and has both normal and inverted output. They have a classic warm and fat VCO sound, not as harsh as the Doepfer, and not so muddy as the Analogue Systems. It sounds so good that I don't automatically want to put them through in a filter to shape it. The PWM sound is extremely beefy. I can't guarantee the CV tracking all to the very top, but it sweeps from LFO to beyond the hearing level to somewhere around 22 KHZ. Even at high modulation levels, it does not go into distortion, and keeping its warmth. That makes it a very good tool for FM sounds. The ring modulator is also a high quality unit. It sounds good, and accepts both AC and DC, making it useful as a VCA unit if needed. On the downside, there are mainly two things. First, the waveform is determinate by a knob. I would have preferred to have them in separate outputs. The second is the lack of an octave switch. (review from electro-music.com ) TR-606 A cool little box! So primitive and cute! The 606 was the percussion side-kick to the TB-303. It even looks like the 303. It stores up to 32 patterns and 8 songs. The 606 allows switching between Pattern Play and Write mode while running - making the 606 the only drumcomputer in the X0X series that can be edited while performing and switching patterns. It is also possible to link up to 4 consecutive patterns in Pattern Play mode. There is only a mono audio output, however there are mods from Kenton Electronics and Analog Solutions that will add individual outputs for each drum tone. The 606 has seven analog drum sounds which are simple, yet great! Kick, Snare, 2 toms, open hat, closed hat, cymbal, accent. The hi-hats are a very tinny electronic sound and its toms are great for soft tribal patterns. These seven sounds alone are still quite popular today, and the 606 has been used by Uberzone, Cirrus, Sneaker Pimps, Download, Aphex Twin, Astral Projection, Nine Inch Nails, Mr. Oizo, Jimi Tenor, Kid 606, OMD, Moby, Freddy Fresh, Autechre, Luke Vibert, Latinsizer, Nortec Collective and Union Jack. For control, the 606 can receive or transmit DINSync for synchronization with other TR and TB family instruments. There are also two trig-outs on the unit, which make it very valuable as a pattern-programmable dual-channel trigger sequencer. It's often used for this by various people (Jimi Tenor) to 'drive' other sequencers and the like. (text review from http://www.vintagesynth.com/) Latinsizer info: In this project Pepe Mogt works with a very synthetic and basic set of musical tools to create a quirky approach to electronic music exemplified by "Ritmo 55", the first track released by Latinsizer which appeared on the Nortec Experimental CD. This approach could be described as a combination of the melodic work of early synth Pop classics such as Eno-era Roxy Music and Switched on Bach, modular synth based artists like Tangerine Dream and the grit of urban Tijuana, Latinsizer "live at MUtek.mx CD" has a more noise dance oriented aproach without loosing his analog roots Latinsizer becomes an alternate project to Nortec, and particularly, to Fussible, recently playing at experimental and dance music festivals like Mutek or Decibel, currently is working on his new album and EP, Celofán is a video of his latest works. Roland GR-300 guitar synth A brief demonstration of the classic Roland GR-300 guitar synth. I posted an earlier vid featuring the GR-300 in a filter modulation performance along with drums, etc. This is just the synth itself - with some TC Electronic D-Two delay. I am using the Roland G-505 guitar controller. You must use the 24-pin cable to interface the guitar with the synth. The older cables with the metal ends are the ones to use. The newer plastic end cables suck. They are not as reliable and cannot be repaired. Avoid them at all costs unless money means nothing to you. The G-505 has a 3-position mode switch which allows you to go between synth only, hexa-fuzz only, or a combination of both. There is also a balance knob which lets you layer in the actual guitar sound. The G-505 is a single coil Strat style guitar that sounds really good on its own. I was watching a Genesis concert video from their 1984 Mama tour and Mike rutherford was playing a G-505 that looked exactly like this one. For the first time I was able to see and hear how he was getting some of those signature synthetic fuzz tones - the hexa-fuzz on the GR-300. Here we have the synthesizer (a tweaked Atari Punk console) and a clock + power all housed in one altoids tin and an analogue sequencer housed in a second Altoids tin. MFB-SYNTH LITE II MFB-SYNTH LITE II is a little monophonic synthesizer from Berlin. I like this sweet little box, but also I found some bad points. Good points: It has a very analog-ish sound character (although it uses digital oscillators). Suboscillator and ring modulator give it much complexity. It offers not only warm sounds but also fat and dirty sounds. It has an intuitive interface in spite of its small size. I think it is well designed "as it should be". Bad points: In fact, LITE II is not a reliable product. Its built-in step sequencer has many flaws. Overall sound quality is not good (there is noticeable amount of noise). OSC-sync and PWM don't work right. Tags: mfb synth lite |
