Tanzania albinos face violence - 25 Jun 08 In the past 18 months, at least 25 Albinos, including children, have been mutilated and murdered in Tanzania. Authorities say witch doctors appear to be linked to the killings. Albinism is especially prevalent in Africa, where it is estimated to affect as many as one in a thousand people. It occurs when the genes don't produce enough portions of a pigment known as melanin, meaning the skin is extremely pale. Yvonne Ndege reports from Tanzania. Tanzania Ngorongoro Crater Video Safari The Ngorongoro Crater is often called 'Africa's Eden' and the '8th Natural Wonder of the World,' a visit to the crater is a main drawcard for tourists coming to Tanzania and a definite world-class attraction. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater's ridge, tall Masaai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries. Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes its eponymous famous crater, Olduvai Gorge, and huge expanses of highland plains, scrub bush, and forests that cover approximately 8300 square kilometres. A protected area, only indigenous tribes such as the Masaai are allowed to live within its borders. Lake Ndutu and Masek, both alkaline soda lakes are home to rich game populations, as well as a series of peaks and volcanoes and make the Conservation Area a unique and beautiful landscape. Of course, the crater itself, actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is the main attraction. Accommodation is located on its ridges and after a beautiful descent down the crater rim, passing lush rain forest and thick vegetation, the flora opens to grassy plains throughout the crater floor. The game viewing is truly incredible, and the topography and views of the surrounding Crater Highlands out of this world. This truly magical place is home to Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys discovered the hominoid remains of a 1.8 million year old skeleton of Australopithecus boisei, one of the distinct links of the human evolutionary chain. In a small canyon just north of the crater, the Leakeys and their team of international archaeologists unearthed the ruins of at least three distinct hominoid species, and also came upon a complete series of hominoid footprints estimated to be over 3.7 million years old. Evacuated fossils show that the area is one of the oldest sites of hominoid habitation in the world. The Ngorongoro Crater and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are without a doubt some of the most beautiful parts of Tanzania, steeped in history and teeming with wildlife. Besides vehicle safaris to Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and surrounding attractions, hiking treks through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are becoming increasingly popular options. Either way you choose to visit, the Crater Highlands are an unforgettable part of the Tanzanian experience. Tags: Safari Kenya Africa Trips |

In these districts, 90% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity. The poverty experienced in these rural areas is not just a lack of money but also the inability to access basic needs, such as health care and health facilities as well as voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Despite having a lack of such basic needs, the Tanzanian people are world-renowned for their friendliness. Childrens Book Project Tanzania (part 2) During my stay in Dar Es Salaam I paid a visit to the main office of the Children's Book Project. This unique project has achieved many great things and continues to grow. I interviewed CBP Director Lipangala Minzi and went to one of their successful projects, Mwenda Pole Primary School just outside of the city. In many ways this school can be seen as an example for the rest of the country. Have a look! When their day at school is over, these children do not break out their brand-new Game Boy or Xbox. Most fetch water from a well, or milk cows tied up in ramshackle stables─a square of wooden fence─or collect fresh-laid eggs. But others go to the library to borrow picture books. The books are shelved by level of difficulty, and written in Tanzania's two official languages, English and Kiswahili. Children can even sprawl on the carpeted floor and read in comfort. "We could have set up chairs, as in a classroom," the librarian explains, "but we preferred to create a more relaxed environment that will encourage children to read." This relative abundance of material is very rare in the region. It has allowed pupils at Mwenda Pole Primary School continually to improve their grades over the past four years. They can thank the Children's Book Project (CBP), a Tanzanian NGO devoted to publishing and distributing local literature─a blessing in a country where even history books come from Western countries. In 1997, CBP noticed that boxes of donated books sometimes remained untouched for months. CBP concluded that it was not enough to make resources available. They also had to be used effectively. CBP began training teachers to do just that. It was an enormous challenge. Basic evaluation techniques, such as book reports, seemed like quite an innovation at the time. CBP is funded by CODE, an Ottawa-based organization. CODE builds on local initiatives in its nine countries of focus, promoting education in Africa and Central America. In Tanzania, CBP has another partner, the Tanzanian Book Support Trust (TBST), founded in 1999 to liaise between international donors and schools in need. TBST volunteers are generally responsible for selecting books likely to interest both teachers and pupils, from a list suggested by American and Canadian publishers. The books are shipped by boat, stored in a warehouse, and resold for 1/20th of their cost. Subjects range from mechanical physics to a collection of novels for teenagers. This film is made by Bram Vergeer from the Holland based InSideOut Foundation. It, together with many more films, can be seen on our website www.insideseries.com. Our aim is to present a different view on the daily life of people in countries all over the world, especially in countries which in our opinion are being portrayed in a limited way by the common media. We do this by making documentary films, developing a series of short films mend for the internet (the Inside Series) and stimulating filmmakers across the world. We depend on donor funding and sponsorship. Hali Halisi - Rap as alternative medium in Tanzania (part 1) (Part 1 of 3 - you can watch the other parts on Youtube) In June 1999, the Dutch Madunia foundation filmed Hali Halisi, a 30-minute video documentary about rap in Tanzania (East Africa). Hali Halisi (a Swahili expression meaning "the real situation") portrays rap as an alternative medium in Tanzania. Rappers and experts give their views on the emerging hip hop scene in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar (Tanzania), and their thoughts on the importance of rap as a medium for communication. Shot in 1999 and released in 2000, this was the first film to document the vibrant hip hop scene in Tanzania, in a time before Bongo flava took over and when artistic integrity was more important than commercial appeal. It shows unique footage of Tanzanian youth's heroes such as rapper MrII, who at the time was more popular than the president. 'Hali Halisi' was also pioneering in its approach of hip hop as a platform for education and discussion among a generation that wanted real change in politics and society. The documentary was awarded 'best short documentary' at New York's H2O hip hop film festival, and an award was handed out to the makers by mc Jean Grae in the presence of hip hop pioneers such as Afrika Bambaata and Kool Herc. It has since shown on various film festivals in Africa, US and Europe. 'Hali Halisi' also served as a major inspiration to NGO's who discovered the use of rap as a way of communicating with the youth. Some of the artists featuring in 'Hali Halisi': -KBC (Kwanza Unit / Clouds FM) -Bonnie Luv (Mawingu studio / Clouds FM) -Gangwe Mobb (Inspekta Haruna) -GWM (D-Chief & KR) -Bantu Pound (Soggy Doggy, Snaz-T) -Mr II aka 2Proud aka Sugu -Deplowmatz (Dola Soul aka Balozi & Saigon) -Ras Pompidou -Abbas & Baraka (Underground Souls) -X Plastaz & Fortune Tellers (Arusha) -Sos B -P-Funk (Producer) -Bad Gear (Coca Cola popstars) -Mack D -Taji Liundi (ex Clouds/Mawingu) -Cool Para (Zanzibar) -Sebastian Maganga (Uhuru FM) And experts from Basata / Radio Tanzania Credits 'Hali Halisi' was produced by the Madunia foundation, in commission of the Scherpenzeel Media Foundation. The video was made on not-for-profit basis and copies are distributed against cost price.
