Mein Kleiner Blumenstrauss...Played On Tyros 2! My arrangement of Mein Kleiner Blumenstrauss, (My Little Bouquet). Written by Robert Jung, and Willi M. Willmann. I hope that you enjoy my musical arrangement! The photos are of the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Please feel free to comment, and to "RATE" the video...thanks!!! Some history of the Los Angeles County Arboretum: When Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin, (wealthy early California pioneer...considered "Lucky" for his numerous rich mining claims), purchased Rancho Santa Anita in 1875, he acquired not only the natural lakes and cienegas on the property, but water rights in both Big and Little Santa Anita Canyons just north of his homesite. The Baldwin Ranch was situated on a 2,000 acre artesian belt, a benefit of its location atop the Raymond Hill Fault. Sixty percent of Baldwin Ranch irrigation waters came from artesian sources, the remaining 40 percent from canyon waters. Baldwin Lake, which served as a holding reservoir for ranch irrigation projects, was dredged and deepened, perhaps 12-15 feet, by owner Baldwin in the late 1880s, and a retaining wall, capped by granite boulders, was constructed around the lake edge. "Baldwin's Belvedere," today known as the Queen Anne Cottage, was built in 1885 on a peninsula jutting out into the horseshoe-shaped lake; the springs that feed the lake are located in both the north and south inlets. In front of the Cottage still stands a Baldwin era artesian well described in a Pacific Rural Press article of May 9, 1885, as "throwing water six feet above the ground in a large volume," with "cemented, open raceways made for the overflow to pass off in little rivulets all around the house." Julian Fisher, who worked on the ranch as a child with his father, remembered furnishing drinking fountains for ranch visitors by "taking my shovel, digging a hole, sticking a pipe in the ground and setting out a stack of cups for folks to take a drink from free flowing water." Lucky Baldwin supplied residents of the city of Arcadia with a combination of canyon and artesian water of such quality that a Los Angeles Herald reporter commented, "Why, if this God-given fluid were piped to Los Angeles and distributed to the city, the saloons would lose half their customers, and water drinking would become fashionable." (Mar. 30, 1887) Johnny Weissmuller swam in LASCA Lagoon/Baldwin Lake for three decades as Tarzan and later Jungle Jim. A local news story reported that he, in fact, set an unrecorded Olympic swim record when a cage of crocodiles was accidentally opened during filming (Weissmuller beat the crocs to the lake shore). Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour took up a month-long watery Baldwin Lake residence in homes on stilts for the filming of Road to Singapore in 1939, the same year the Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.,/Madeleine Carroll film Safari managed to sink a paddlewheel boat in the same lake. Undaunted, television's original "Fantasy Island" lowered a pontoon plane by helicopter onto Baldwin Lake and propelled it across the water to disembark visitors to Mr. Roark's island paradise. For Alex Haley's "Roots II", Baldwin Lake became Kunta Kinte's river home in Africa. The Arboretum is a 127- acre botanical garden and historical site jointly operated by the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. Avalon...Played On Tyros 2! My arrangement of Avalon...supposedly written by singer Al Jolson in 1929, but there has been some dispute over this claim. The year is not in dispute. I hope that you like my arrangement! Please feel free to comment, and to rate the video...thanks!!! Some history of Santa Catalina Island: Santa Catalina Island, often called Catalina Island, or just Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. State of California. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. Prior to the modern era the island was inhabited by people of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe, who also lived in the area of Los Angeles, had villages near present day San Pedro, and Playa Del Rey, and who regularly traveled back and forth to Catalina for trade. The Tongva called the island Pimu or Pimungna. The Gabrielino/Tongva are renowned for their mining, working and trade of soapstone which was found in great quantities and varieties on the island. This material was in great demand and was traded along the California coast. The first European to set foot on the island was Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, sailing for Spain. This happened on October 7, 1542. He claimed the island for Spain and christened it San Salvador. Another Spanish explorer, Sebastion Vizcaino, rediscovered the island on the eve of Saint Catherine's Day (November 24) in 1602. He renamed it Santa Catalina to honor the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria. During the next 300 years, the island served as home or base of operation for many visitors, including Russian otter hunters, Yankee smugglers and itinerant fishermen, among others. Franciscan monks considered building a mission there, but abandoned the idea due to the lack of fresh water on the island. By the 1830s, most of the island's native population had migrated to the mainland to work in the missions or as ranch hands for the many private land owners. By the end of the 19th century, the island was almost uninhabited except for a few cattle herders. At that time, its location just 20 miles (30 km) from Los Angeles—the city that had reached the population of 50,000 in 1890 and was undergoing the period of enormous growth—was a major factor that contributed to the development of the island into a vacation destination. The first owner to try to develop Avalon into a resort destination was George Shatto, a real estate speculator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who purchased the Island for $200,000 at the height of the real estate boom in Southern California in 1887. Shatto created the settlement that would become Avalon, and can be credited with building the town's first hotel, the original Hotel Metropole, and pier. His sister-in-law Etta Whitney came up with the name Avalon, which was pulled as a reference from Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem "Idylls Of The King," which was about the legend of King Arthur. Despite Shatto's efforts, in a few years he had to default on his loan and the island went back to the previous owner, James Lick's estate. The sons of Phineas Banning bought the island in 1891 from the estate of James Lick and established the Santa Catalina Island Company to develop it as a resort. They built a home at what is now Two Harbors, (isthmus) and is now that village's hotel. Their efforts were set back on November 29, 1915 when a fire burned half of Avalon's buildings, including six hotels and several clubs. World War 1also hampered tourism, and the Banning brothers were forced to sell the island in 1919 to chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. From 1927 through 1937 pottery and tile were made on the island, and these items are now considered collectibles. The Chicago Cubs, also owned by Wrigley, used the island for the team's spring training from ca. 1921-1951, absent the war years of 1942-45. Built in 1929, the Casino -- which is actually not a gambling hall but "place of entertainment" -- played host to dozens of Big Bands through the 1930s and 1940s. Guests came by steamship to Charleston and later jitterbug on the huge parquet floor. They danced the night away to the music of Glen Miller, Harry James, Kay Kyser, and many others over the years. The largest number of dancers ever in the Casino was 6,200 people dancing to the music of Kay Kyser, on May 8, 1940. Virtually every Big Band of that era played in the Casino Ballroom. Live broadcasts were carried over CBS radio from 1934 into the 1950s. Tags: Tyros2 Yamaha Keyboards Big Band Music Catalina Island |

Cielito Lindo...Played On Tyros 2! I hope that you enjoy my musical arrangement of this popular Mexican song...Cielito Lindo. Please feel free to comment, and to "RATE" the video...thanks!!! Some history of the song: Cielito Lindo is a popular traditional song of Mexico, written in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés. According to his biography, Quirino Mendoza y Cortés was inspired by a girl he met on a trip into the mountains who had a beauty mark. He wrote the music and all but the opening verse which was, except for small changes, lifted from a much earlier song from Spain. Because ladies' hairstyles at the time were long tresses often folded on top of the head and held together with pins and a comb, "Sierra Morena" is interpreted as the girl's hair rather than her face. Also, morena often refers to a person's hair and skin color, furthering this interpretation. The title is a poetic term meant to fit the music, rather than a commonly used phrase. In English it means "beautiful little heaven". Cielo is a common term of endearment in Spanish, meaning "heaven" and "sky", while the suffix -ito/-ita can be added to Spanish names or words to show affection. The random photos are of various locals in Mexico. Tags: Tyros2 Yamaha Keyboards Mexico Instrumental Waltz Easy Listening |

Lara's Theme...Played On Tyros 2! My arrangement of Lara's theme...written by the French composer, and condutor Maurice Jarre. The pictures are of the state of California...Fort Ross, the town of Mendocino, and the Mendocino Headlands. They were taken in the "Spring" of 2005. Some history of Fort Ross.....The settlement of Ross, the name derived from the word for Russia (Rossiia) was established by the Russian - American Company, a commercial hunting and trading company chartered by the tsarist government, with shares held by the members of the Tsar's family, court nobility and high officials. Trade was vital to Russian outposts in Alaska, where long winters exhausted supplies and the settlements could not grow enough food to support themselves. Alexander Baranov, the Chief Manager of the Russian American Company, (RAC), in Sitka, Alaska...directed his chief deputy, Ivan Alexandrovich Kuskov, to establish a colony in California as a food source for Alaska and to hunt profitable sea otters. After several reconnaissance missions, Kuskov arrived at Ross in March of 1812 with a party of 25 Russians, many of them craftsmen, and 80 native Alaskans from Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands. After negotiating with the Kashaya Pomo people who inhabited the area, Kuskov began construction of the fort. The carpenters who accompanied Kuskov to Settlement Ross, along with their native Alaskan helpers, had worked on forts in Alaska, and the construction here followed models of the traditional stockade, blockhouses and log buildings found in Siberia and Alaska. The Company holdings extended as far south as Bodega Bay, where Port Rumianstev at Bodega served as their main port. Over 200 hundred ships came through this port during active trading years. Most supplies and furs were kept in warehouses at Port Rumianstev. Other RAC holdings extended to inland areas where several farms were built up. Farallones Islands, west of San Francisco, was used as a hunting base for the Company. I hope that you enjoy my musical arrangement, and the photos!
