Digging Beyond User Preferences Google Tech Talks July, 16 2008 ABSTRACT Many of the applications you develop are applications you would use. This makes it easy to know what will work and what won't. At some point, however, you'll find yourself developing something that you would only occasionally use, and suddenly you're treading in dark places. You know user research is important, you know the experience of using the product should be positive, if not delightful. But sometimes the findings you get are pretty difficult to translate into a decision about the software. Mental models are diagrams that represent the underlying philosophies and emotions that drive people's behavior, matched up with the ways you think you can support them with your software. Rather than knowing "I like to go to movies alone," you'll learn the myriad reasons why. (E.g. "I like to give the director the attention and respect he deserves, because when I wrote a play in college, people didn't pay attention very well, they didn't get the point, and I felt frustrated.") Knowing the motivating philosophy opens up different avenues for supporting the behavior. You could, for example, offer additional means for this type of moviegoer to "get the point" of the movie. Mental models are useful as structures for attaching these ideas to sets of philosophies and for generating new ideas in places where there are gaps. In this presentation, author Indi Young will introduce you to mental models and show you one that was developed at Google for the Analytics product. Indi will show you how to use the mental model to expand your perspective and create applications that reach beyond the basic requirements. Speaker: Indi Young Indi's work spans a number of decades, from the mid-80's when the desktop metaphor was replacing command line and menu-based systems, to the mid-90's when the Web first toddled onto the scene, to now, when designers are intent on crafting good experiences. After 10 years of consulting, Indi helped found Adaptive Path with six other partners, all hoping to spread good design around the world, making things easier for people everywhere. Indi's mental models have helped both start-ups and large corporations discover and support customer behaviors they didn't think to explore at first. She has written a book about the mental model method, Mental Models - Aligning design strategy with human behavior, published by Rosenfeld Media. The goal of the tutorial is to make you understand how the user interface works, so that you can explore GIMP without being hindered by the user interface. Excuse my abuse of the word 'and'. A: By default GIMP is configured to save window positions on exit. If you only get one window when you start GIMP, that's what the saved window configuration is. You can reset this to default by going to 'File / Preferences / Window Management' and clicking the 'Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values' button. Here you can also disable that GIMP should save window configuration on exit, as well as save current window configuration. Coconut: COde CONstructing User Tool Google Tech Talks March, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Coconut is a developing system for high-assurance, high-performance software. It was used to develop a library of special functions for the Cell BE processor, which is distributed in the Cell BE SDK 3.0 as MASS. Average performance is 4X better than the alternative hand-tuned C library, SimdMath. Coconut has been successful where patterns of efficient hardware-specific computation can be captured as higher-order functions and encoded in a Domain Specific Language embedded in Haskell. Patterns include efficient control structures not expressible in C, e.g., the MultiLoop, and efficient uses of SIMD instructions which require significant compile-time computation for pattern specialization. Some patterns interact with a novel instruction scheduler called Explicitly Staged Software Pipelining, based on a min-cut approach, which outperforms SWING modulo scheduling in our tests. A less developed aspect of Coconut is the parallel production of proofs of correctness along with executables. Current work aims to prove only limited properties about programs---the ones most likely to be broken---creative use of SIMD instructions, and parallelization. Coconut intermediate code is represented as nested code (hyper)graphs. At the lowest level, we transform acyclic loop bodies to remove the effect of SIMDization, and produce machine and/or human readable specifications. This has been used to verify opaque patterns of optimizing linear algebra for SIMD processors. Such code graphs are embedded in higher levels containing control flow, first single-threaded control flow optimized for ILP, and then parallel control-flow, optimized to hide communication latency. At this level control flow is restricted to allow peak utilization of multi-core hardware, but enable efficient compile-time verification of soundness. Soundness, in this context, means that the parallelized program can be transformed into a code graph without synchronizing control flow, because every execution can be shown to produce the same result. Think of it as reducing the parallel debugging effort to the single-threaded debugging problem by eliminating the non-determinism inherent in parallel code. I will give a formal language description of the language, and the O(n) algorithm which proves soundness and produces the equivalent ``single threaded'' code graph. The OpenOnload User-level Network Stack Google Tech Talks February, 7 2008 ABSTRACT The architecture of conventional networked systems has remained largely constant for many years now. However, some specialised application domains have adopted alternative architectures. For example, the HPC community uses message passing libraries which perform network processing in user-space in conjunction with the features of user-accessible network interfaces. Such user-level networking reduces networking overheads considerably without sacrificing the security and resource management functionality that the operating system normally provides. Supporting user-level TCP/UDP/IP networking for a more general set of applications poses considerable challenges, including: intercepting system calls, binary compatability with existing applications, maintaining security, supporting fork() and exec(), passing sockets through Unix domain sockets and advancing the protocol when the application is not scheduled. This talk presents the OpenOnload architecture for user-level networking. We describe our solutions to the challenges outlined above, and novel techniques to reduce CPU overhead, avoid lock contention, minimise interrupt overheads and improve cache efficiency. Finally we present performance results of the OpenOnload stack including protocol compliance, and plans for further work within the open source community.
