Some sources, including blues scholar Paul Oliver, claim the version popularized by Lead Belly in the 1940s is based on the 1886 pop song by Gussie L. Davis. The recording by Jo Stafford was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 1142. It reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart at #26 on September 1, 1950, its only week on the chart. [1] This was her last charted hit before moving from Capitol to Columbia Records. On the Cash Box chart, where all available versions were combined in the standings, the song reached a peak position of #1 on September 2, 1950, and lasted at #1 for 10 weeks. Child weavers / labour and the poverty This short film shows how families use their children to earn for the family. A girl child in this video clip adds nearly 55 cents per day to her family income. How can we expect a family to send children to schools for education when their earning is less than a dollor per day? Simply bringing resolution or laws is not enough to eliminate child labour rather the planners should work the methods and policies to generate rural employment that generates enough income to spend and send child for study. Simply saying child labour as crime is easy and poetic. We need to understand the darkness behind this activities. We need to win over the reasons behind parents seeking their children for income. Science, mathematics, economics, foreign language and culture, astronomy, and religion amongst other disiplines were taught here. Today, I discovered a small UNESCO supported carpet company nestled amongst the history and grand architecture. This afternoon, we head for Penjikent in Tajikistan and then onto Dushanbe and the 732km Pamir Hwy. For me, this highway wil be one of the trip highlights, apparently last year only 150 tourists travelled this route across the "roof of the world". With visas and special military permits in hand, the road ahead is set to be cold but full of warm and generous mountain folk. William Weaver's Poem: "Casualty of War Uncounted" William Weaver is a member of "Poets for Peace." He read two of his poems at an antiwar rally, held in Baltimore, MD, on March 19, 2008. One of them was dedicated to U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Lucey. After returning from the Iraq War and while suffering intensely from PTSD, and allegedly receiving little or no care from the VA, Cpl. Lucey committed suicide in the home of his parents. The poem is entitled: "Casualty of War Uncounted." The event was captioned: "Winter Soldier and Baltimore Speak Out." It was held at the Govans Presbyterian Church. Carla Nealy served as the Emcee. Varanasi Weavers Crisis The Varanasi Silk Saris have been an emblem of Indian Culture since ancient times. These beautiful saris woven using handlooms have intricrate designs and patterns made sometimes from gold and silver. Over the years, the demand for these saris which have been the most coveted bridal wear amongst both Hindus and Muslims brides, has reduced. To make matters worse, Chinese "fakes" made on powerlooms are now available. Exploitation by middlemen and these factors have led to a major decline in the industry. There are approximately 500,000 silk weavers in Varanasi. 60 % of the handlooms are closed. Due to lack of work, many highly skilled weavers have chagned professions. There is starvation and malnutrition. There have been several deaths and suicides reported. This is an issue of poverty, child labor, human rights, unfair trade, intellectual property, threat to cultural heritage. One of the main reasons is unchecked and insensitive globalization. This is a video report highlighting this issue. Made by PVCHR ( People's vigillance committee on human rights - a human rights organization working in Varanasi) and (AHRC) Asian Human, Rights Commission, it features the report by Paul Mason of BBC. He makes everything by hand - its amazing to see him create, build and make come to life this incredible Christmas display. Our inspiration is the love and joy it brings to others. A family once left a note in our mailbox saying they brought their grandson home from the hospital, and on the way home brought him by to see our house, and it was the first time he had smiled in months.
