Dance and the Egyptian people This is an interview with a friend that I made at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan dance festival in Egypt. He is not a dancer, but a DJ and an actor. In this interview he explains to me the issue of whether or not Raks Baladi, or "belly dance is really a woman's only dance, how Egyptians learn to dance, the context in which dance happens in Egyptian society, the context of professional dancers and the perceptions of men who dance on stage. Egyptian Dancer in Luxor Egypt by Mahsoub Mahsoub is a musician in Mohamed Murad's band The Musicians of the Nile, from Luxor Egypt. He is related to the famous Saidi singer Metkal Kenawi. Mahsoub is not a profesional dancer persay, but an entertainer. He sings, plays several instruments as well as dances. He and his fellow musicians work primarily at weddings and other community celebrations in the area of Upper Egypt. I first saw Mahsoub in Luxor in 1988, when he was about 14 years old. He was one of the musicians playing in the band that was hired by "Morocco" to entertain the members of her tour group. After the traditional dancers, the Banat Mazin sisters, (they can be seen on Morocco's #6 video Dances of Egypt and the Sudan), danced for a while, Mahsoub spontaniously got up and danced. I hadn't seen Mashsoub again until I met him at Rakia Hassan's Dance festival, "Ahlan wa Sahlan", in Giza in 2004, where he was working as one of the dance instructors teaching traditional Southern Egyptian dances. This footage was filmed in July of 2005 as part of an interview I did with him in which he told me that he makes his living as a musician and dancer at local weddings in the area. Mahsoub told me that he had a cousin who had recently died named Abdul Karim who also used to perform at weddings in the area. He can be seen in Aisha Ali's video "Dances of Egypt". Tito Egyptian male Raks Sharki (Oriental Dance/belly Dance) What we call belly dance is a theatrical version of the social folk dance done in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. Its an expression of celebration and fun done by both sexes. The perofessional version we are use to seeing was developed in the nightclubs of Cairo in the 1930's. It has been done almost exclucively by women because it is tied into the tourism market where the majority of the customers in the nightclubs are male. In recent years, men have began to join their sisters on stage as well. The first modern male dancers began in the U.S.A. in the late '60's and 1970's, then spreading to Europe in the '80's and '90's. Now the numbers of male dancers is increasing world wide. Tito Seif known as Egypt's only professional male Oriental/belly dancer. He is the most acclaimed Oriental dancer in Egypt's popular resort town Sharm el Sheikh in the Sianai. He is being sought out more and more in Cairo and Alexandria to perform in weddings and othere special eventsI. When I spoke to him this summer he was on his way to perform at a saint day celebration in Alexandria. I filmed this performance in Giza, July 2005. I've been told that there are at least two more guys performing in Egypt's Red Sea resort towns, but I haven't seen them. In any case, Tito is definately the first man in modern times to perform this dance in a professional, rather than social setting for the general public, Egyptian and foriegn alike. Egyptian Dance Raks Shisha: by Tarik Sultan (belly dancer)#5 In the Middle East and North Africa people often will balance things on their heads when they dance socially, such as bottles, glasses, or canes to show off their balance and dexterity. This dance was created to reflect this tradition. The shisha or water pipe is a common object found in caffes and other social gathering places throughout Egypt. The Shisha Dance was first performed by Tarik in 2003 and is now being performed by renounded Egyptian male Oriental Dancer from Sharm il Sheikh Tito. Egyptian Guys in Cairo Dancing baladi on the Nile What we in the West call "Belly Dance", is a theatricalized version of one of the social dances done throughout the region of tghe Middle east and North Africa. Its done by men, women, young and old. Its only the professional version done in night clubs that is considered by most to "a woman's job". I saw many guys who were good dancers, however, filming was difficult because of all the people moving around. A word of caution: Women object very strongly to being taped or photographed. I stopped filming when the girl got up because she had just riffed a guy a new one on the previous boat for taking her picture! The party boats across from the Hilton are cheap. For 2 Egyptian pounds, (34 cents U.S.), they take you on a 15 min spin. They offer the local population, of families means of affordable entertainment, and the young guys a fun way to blow off some steam. Because of the low cost most people spend the night boat hoping. Gives a great opportunity to see some good, (and not so good), dancing in its native setting. Tags: Male belly dancing Oriental Dance Raks baladi Egyptian dance |
