Nikola Šubić Zrinski - battle of Siget This a tribute to Nikola Šubić Zrinski, a great Croatian hero who deserves more appreciation in our country. Tip: read quickly! Nikola Šubić Zrinski or Miklos Zrinyi (in Hungarian)(1508--1566) was a Croatian soldier in service of the Habsburg Monarchy and member of the Zrinski noble family. He distinguished himself at the siege of Vienna in 1529, and in 1542 saved the imperial army from defeat before Pest by intervening with 400 Croats, for which he was appointed ban of Croatia. He later beat the Turks in the Battle of Babócsa and the Battle of Somlyo. Zrinski resigned as ban in 1561. In 1566, from August 5 to September 7, his small force (2,300 soldiers) heroically defended the little fortress of Siget against the Turks (90,000 soldiers and 300 cannons), led by Suleiman the Magnificent in person. The Croatian forces of Zrinski repulsed 3 all-out Turk assaults for several weeks. Despite their inferiority, the imperial army did not send them any reinforcements. After days of bloody struggle, the defenders retreated into the Old City; with the majority of Croats already dead, this was their last stand. The Turks tried to lure Zrinski into submission, offering him rule over all of Croatia but to no avail. Zrinski said: "nobody will point his finger on my children in contempt." During the Siege Suleiman died on 7th September. But the news was kept secret so that it would not ruin morale at the end of the siege. The next day the final battle was conducted. The castle of Siget was burnt down to ruined walls and the all-out attack by the Turks began who swarmed against the Old City, drumming and yelling. Zrinski prepared for the last charge, addressing his men: "..Let us go out from this burning place into the open and stand up to our enemies. Who dies - he will be with God. Who dies not - his name will be honoured. I will go first, and what I do, you do. And God is my witness - I will never leave you, my brothers and knights! Zrinski led an exit force of 600 troops from the castle. He was heavily wounded at his chest and his head by Turkish bullets. At the end, his dead body was beheaded. The Turks took the fort and effectively won the battle. Only 7 defenders managed to get through Turkish lines. The Turks suffered heavy losses, estimated at 18,000 cavalrymen and 7,000 elite janissaries and several high-ranked officers. Croatian composer Ivan Zajc created a masterpiece opera titled Nikola Šubić Zrinski which debuted in 1876. It is a patriotic play which depicts the heroic Croatian struggle against the Turks. It is still in production today. A square surrounding a large park in the center of Zagreb is named after N. Š. Zrinski, commonly known as Zrinjevac. Pen cannon I've made my own cannon... You take an iron ink cartridge, take the ink out (the best way is to heat the cartridge, not write with it all day long as I planned to do at first :D), put 2-3 match-tops in it, compress it all together wit a match, put the match in on the top, heat it on the spot were the match-tops are, and bang... If it comes out right it can make a sound of a small firecracker, and the match can fly out up to 5 meters... I tried putting cartboard in front of it and it went through... Also, I mounted the cartridge on a toy-car chasis so that it looks like the german 88mm AA-AT gun. Croatian: Napravio sam svoj topić... Uzmeš željezni uložak od kemijske, izvadiš tintu (i to tako da zagrijavaš uložak, a ne da cijeli dan pišeš s njim što sam ja bio počeo), staviš 2-3 kresa šibice unutra, naguraš to unutra sa šibicom, staviš šibicu unutra do kuda ide, zagriješ na mjestu gdje su kresovi i bum... Ako dobro ispadne čuje se ko manja petarda, a šibica odleti i do 5 metara. Stavio sam karton ispred topića i šibica ga je probila. Hrvatski dobrovoljci u njemačkoj vojsci - Drugi svjetski rat This movie is a small tribute to the Croatian soldiers who died for their homeland fighting in the German army. It is the least what they deserve... since they are virtually unheard of in Croatia.(tip: read quickly) Here's the whole text movie if you haven't been able to catch it: On July 2nd, 1941, Pavelic called for volunteers from Croatia to join the struggle in the East.The ground contingent of the planned Croatian formations was the first to be formed. When finally organized on July 16th 1941, the Regiment was given the title Verstarken (Reinforced) Kroatischen Infanterie-Regiment 369. The Regiment had 3,895 men. The commander was Colonel Ivan Markulj. On September 22nd 1942, Colonel Viktor ''Vitez'' Pavicic replaced Colonel Markulj. On September 26th 1942 the Regiment arrived in the suburbs of Stalingrad and soon entered the city itself. The 369th Regiment thus became the only unit of non-Germans to participate in the attack on Stalingrad. In the inferno of Stalingrad their casualties steadily accumulated. As December arrived, the few remaining Croats were frozen, hungry and lacking ammunition and weapons. On December 25, 1942, defending the Red October factory, they first threw back the Soviet attack and than counter-attacked and destroyed the enemy unit and retook their previous position... Lt-Colonel Eichler, upon hearing of this success, sent them a message, saying that the Grenadiers of the 212th Regiment are proud to have warriors like us Croats in their midst. Most men of the Regiment died in the desperate battles at the end. Lt.-Colonel Mesic (who replaced Pavicic) and a handfull of soldiers survived and surrendered to the Soviets... They were forced to walk with no warm clothes and no food all the way to Moscow. Here they were fed once a day and in 1945, Mesic was sent to Yugoslavia where the Communists had him liquidated. When Pavelic's call on Croatian volunteers for the Eastern Front went out, an airforce unit was quickly organized. Colonel Ivan Mrak was selected as the Commander of the Legion. The Legion itself was organized into a Fighter Squadron (commanded by Lt.Colonel Franjo Dzal) and a Bomber Squadron (commanded by Lt.Colonel Vjekoslav Vicevic). The Fighter Squadron received the official designation '15.(Kroatische)/JG 52', and arrived to the Eastern Front on October 6th 1941. The first kill by a Croatian pilot occured in December 1941 by Captain Ferencina, and the second by Lt.Colonel Dzal. By July 1944, when it was returned to Croatia to combat the increasing Partisan menace, the Squadron had tallied 283 kills and had 14 pilots with Ace status. Mato Dukovac (44 kills), Cvitan Galic (38), Mato Culinovic (18), Franjo Dzal (16), Ljudevit Bencetic (15), Safet Boskic (13), Zlatko Stipcic (12), Veca Mikovic (12), Eduard Martinko (12), Stjepan Martinasevic (11), Josip Helebrant (11), Albin Starc (11 kills), Tomislav Kauzlaric (11), Vladimir Ferencina (10), Zdenko Avdic (10), Bozidar Bartulovic (8), Josip Kranjc (9), Jure Lasta (8), Dragutin Gazapi (7), Vladimir Kres (6), Stjepan Radic (5)... ... there were also many unconfirmed victories. The Croatian pilots, during their tour on the Eastern Front, performed over 5.000 sorties. Total number of lost Croatian pilots was 16. The bomber squadron, officially designated '15.(Kroatische)/KG 53'., was equipped with Dornier Do17 aircraft. It arrived on the Eastern Front on October 25th 1941. Its assignments were in the Northern Sector of the Eastern Front, including the bombing of Leningrad and Moscow. After flying 1247 sorties, it was disolved in December of 1942, and integrated into the Croatian airforce to battle the Partisans. During the time it was active, 5 aircraft and 20 men were lost by the Squadron. A Croatian Naval Legion was also formed. Serving on the Black sea and being well liked by the locals, the Town Council of Geniscek named a street "Hrvatska" (Croatia) in their honour. The greatest PES 6 bug ever I was playing PES6 with a patch including all the Croatian club teams (but it worked fine till then)... I was about to do a free kick when, for some reason, the player from the opposite team (Manchester Utd) got in the way and my player missed the ball... from then on I couldn't reach it, I tried pressing all the buttons on my keyboard and nothing worked... I couldn't even switch players and none of the Manchester players tried to get near it... eventulally I had to exit the game (the only button that did work)!
