Holden's HSV W427 Holden is celebrating HSV's 20th anniversary with the release of the fastest car ever produced in Australia - the HSV W427. Unveiled for the first time at the Melbourne Motor Show 2008, the HSV W427 (427 represents the engine's size in cubic inches) marks a new era in Australian muscle cars with a Chevrolet Corvette sourced 7.0-litre LS7 engine producing 370 kW (500 hp) of power and 640 Nm of torque. The engine is assembled by hand specifically for use in the Holden-based sedan and features an advanced dry-sump lubrication system required to match the performance potential of the car.The production version should complete the 0 - 100km/h sprint in around 4.7 seconds thus catapulting the local hero car into a select group of high-performance sedans which features the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG, BMW M5 and Audi RS6. The HSV W427 will go on sale towards the middle of 2008 priced somewhere between $140,000 and $170,000. http://www.hsv.com.au/w427/ Tags: holden hsv w427 |

Pontiac G8 test drive Behind the wheel of the Pontiac G8, Holden's latest export to the United States. The 2008 Pontiac G8 lineup will offer two models: G8 and G8 GT. Each will come with a host of standard performance, convenience and safety features, including: Four-wheel independent suspension Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control Electronic stability control 18-inch aluminum wheels (19-inch wheels available with sport package) Seat-mounted thorax air bags and dual-stage frontal air bags for front passengers, with automatic passenger sensing system Roof rail side-impact air bags for both seating rows OnStar XM Satellite Radio Power-adjustable front seats Fog lamps Chrome exhaust tips Rear lip spoiler A sport package will be available for both models and adds features such as specific wheels including 19-inch aluminum wheels and performance tires on GT a rear wing spoiler, leather shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel and alloy pedals. Distinctive elements include hood scoops and front fender vents, as well as projector-beam headlamps housed in crystal-clear lenses. At the rear, jewel-like taillamps also are mounted in housings and feature bright detail work surrounding the red lighting elements. G8 models have red taillamp lenses and twin chrome exhaust outlets, while G8 GT models feature clear taillamp lenses and quad chrome exhaust tips. All models have an antenna mounted at the rear of the roof. The base G8 model receives a 3.6L DOHC V-6 with variable valve timing, rated at 261 horsepower (194 kW). It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The G8 GT is powered by a uniquely configured 6.0L small-block V-8, rated at 362 horsepower (270 kW) and 391 lb.-ft. of torque (530 Nm). A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode is standard and features the fuel-saving Active Fuel Management system, which enhances fuel economy by alternating between eight- and four-cylinder power. An optional six-speed manual transmission will be available soon after launch. A limited-slip rear differential is standard with GT models. A 114.8-inch (2915 mm) wheelbase, wide front ( 62.7 inches / 1592 mm) and rear ( 63.3 inches / 1608 mm) tracks, and a fully adjustable, four-wheel independent suspension system combine to give the G8 a confident, sharp driving experience. The four-wheel independent suspension system employs a MacPherson strut design in the front and a four-link coil-over-shock design in the rear. Tuning is specific between the base and GT models, but both models use a direct-acting front stabilizer bar, decoupled rear stabilizer bar and lateral ball joints on the rear suspension. This system delivers increased lateral stiffness for enhanced handling. The front suspension features fully adjustable caster, camber and toe; the rear suspension has fully adjustable camber and toe, which enables more precise, tailored suspension tuning. A four-wheel disc brake system includes standard anti-lock and traction control features and is partnered with a standard electronic stability control system. Both the base and GT models feature vented front and rear disc rotors, with twin-piston alloy calipers in front; the rear brakes feature alloy calipers with single-piston actuation. The brakes are approximately one-inch larger on the higher-performance GT model. Designed to meld form and function with world-class fit and finish, the G8's interior delivers both comfort and convenience, packaged in a level of sophistication not often found in its price range. A driver-oriented instrument cluster positions the gauges for easy, direct line of sight; an electronic driver information center is located between the large, round tachometer and speedometer. Attention to detail includes jewel-like instruments, selective use of satin and chrome trim and rich-feeling, grained textures throughout. The instrument cluster glows with crisp, white light on the primary instruments and Pontiac 's signature red lighting illuminates the rest of the instrument panel cluster. The seats offer firm support to hold occupants in place during aggressive cornering; all seats were designed to deliver excellent comfort during long drives. Cloth seating surfaces are standard, with heated leather seating available. G8 GT models will also offer an optional two-tone cloth or leather combination that pairs black with either red or blue inserts and color-matched instrument faces on certain exterior color combinations. Ford unveils the FG Falcon Ford has taken the covers of its much hyped new FG Falcon. The exterior showed off a more chiseled look than its predecessor, obviously inspired by Ford kinetic design language already seen in the Mondeo. Sales start in May, and the FPV high-performance versions will go on-sale June 2. FG is the last hurrah for the Falcon as a unique Australian car. In 2010 it trades its iconic locally-built 4.0-litre inline 6 for an imported V6. In 2012-13 it should adopt an all-new architecture that should be shared globally amongst Ford's rear-wheel drive vehicles including the legendary Mustang sports car. Long term, Ford has yet to guarantee Falcon will continue to be locally-built. While not a clean-sheet like Holden's 2006 VE Commodore, the FG is a massive update of the BA/BF generation that includes all-new sheetmetal and interior, upgraded engines and chassis and a claimed improvement in safety structure that is expected to yield the first five star NCAP safety rating for an Australian-built car. Front and side-front airbags will be standard on all Falcon sedans, while only the entry-level XT misses out on curtains. A reversing camera will be standard on higher level models. Stability control will be standard on all models. Inside Ford is claiming an improved driving environment and class-leading space, exploiting the new car's flatter roof, slimmer doors, slimmer doors and all-new design. Egress and ingress to the rear seat has been addressed with new wider-opening doors, a big criticism of the old car. Ford has crafted three distinct exterior looks for FG sedan to reflect the three model channels that have been created. Significantly, all of them will now wear the Falcon badge. Unsurprisingly the most conservative looker is the XT, which continues as the base model aimed at fleet and family markets. The Futura has been dropped. Next up are the more upmarket looking Falcon G-Series models. G6 replaces Fairmont and G6E (E is for Europe) replaces Fairmont Ghia. The G6E Turbo employs the 4.0-litre turbo previously reserved for the XR6. The successful XR sports model lineup has the most aggressive looks. Its lineup is familiar, including the base model XR6, the XR6 Turbo and the XR8, which is the only V8 left in the lineup. The Falcon ute lineup hasn't been fully revealed, but expect it to be trade oriented, in contrast to Holden's ute which chases recreational customers. There will be an XR8 at the top of the range, but like all other Falcon utes will continue to have leaf springs. And there will be a Falcon wagon, but it will be a barely altered BF III that stays in the range as a 'tool of trade' vehicle, with a leaf spring rear-end and single 4.0-litre engine choice. Again, this contrasts with Holden's racier Sportwagon. The FPV lineup now comprises seven models. Stablity control is now standard on all models, there is a new six-speed manual transmission and some names have changed. However, the GT and GT-P badges continue. FPV has played a key role in the mainstream FG's engine updates, donating its old 290kW 5.4-litre V8. The FG's turbo six is also uprated to 270kW while the standard 4.0 is little changed in terms of outputs. However it does get a five-speed auto to replace the old four-speed and this helps improve fuel economy. The other engines are claimed to be thriftier too, something Ford attributes to engine development work and a tiny 10kg lift in FG's kerb weight. Ford's weight achievements in part due to the expensive decision to use aluminium for some front suspension components. Chassis-wise, this is also the area of major change as FG adopts the Virtual Pivot pioneered by the Territory. The rear Control Blade suspension has been fettled, but remains fundamentally the same. Add in new monotube dampers and improved steering Ford promises this will be the best handling and riding Falcon yet. Tags: ford falcon fg jed bulmer wheels magazine bill osborne |

Australian Army RTF contact in Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom. Australian soldiers with the Reconstruction Task Force (RTF) in Afghanistan were involved in a series of attacks with Taliban extremists in late August. No Australian soldiers were wounded in any of these incidents, but the Taliban was known to have suffered casualties. The soldiers protect the RTF worksite by patrolling throughout the area and maintaining a constant presence. Australia has deployed a Reconstruction Task Force (RTF), consisting of a combined arms team, to the Oruzgan Province in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Slipper. The RTF is in partnership with the Netherlands Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) and forms part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The RTF has a clearly defined role to work on reconstruction, improvement of provincial infrastructure and community based projects. The RTF also provides trade training to the local population and military engineering training to the Afghan National Army. This type of assistance is designed to benefit the people of Oruzgan Province well into the future and form building blocks of a stable and prosperous community. The RTF contains around 370 ADF personnel from predominately Queensland-based units. It includes elements to provide command, security, engineering, and administrative support and is equipped with Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicles (IMV), Australian Light Armoured Vehicles (ASLAVs) and armoured engineer plant equipment. weblink: http://www.militaryvideos.net/videos.php?videonum=76 Tags: australian army infantry RTF operation enduring freedom afghanistan |
