Performing 'Poor Wandering One' - Pirates of Penzance 1998 I start out off stage and enter from the right. The yellow subtitles mark the sisters, the green subtitles mark Frederick and the purple text marks Mabel (me). Probably best known for being featured in the animated film An American Tail, the song Poor Wandering One was written by Gilbert and Sullivan for the opera, The Pirates of Penzance which premiered in New York City in 1879. This was my one and only performance as Mabel in the 1998 production by the Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts. It was a morning performance, which is why I am sometimes really reaching to hit the high notes. Nonetheless, I'd say my voice was at its prime at this age (I was 16 years old). The note I hit at about 4:45 is probably the highest note I've ever managed to reach onstage while still sounding good. My 1995 audition tape to performing arts school I had just turned 14. I'm not sure if this was taped in August or September, but I think this was the first day of musical theater class where they asked us to perform our audition song again. I ran out of breath at the end because my heart was pumping so hard from nervousness. I got much better during these years. I will later upload a performance at the end of junior year of high school. San Diego Wildfires: Black Hawk Rising, Shelters - FF#3 **** Acres burned is up to 410,000. 1300 homes destroyed. $100 million in damages. Containment for each fire ranges from the 28th to the 31st, with full extinguishing scheduled as late as November 5th. No rain in sight. :-( ****UPDATE: Pres. Bush will visit us on Thursday. He has declared a State of Emergency in 7 California counties, including ours. ****UPDATE: Number of evacuees in SD County has climbed to 500,000. ****UPDATE: The total number of acres burned in this county is not as high as I first put. It's more like 250,000. My second impromptu video blog. This is footage of David and I on our way to bring supplies to the Steele Canyone High School Evacuation Center. We saw a Black Hawk land and take off in the parking lot of an Edwards movie theater. The total number of evacuees just here in San Diego has climbed to 300,000. The good news is that some people have been able to return and the National Guard has air dropped over some regions and stopped the fires. The bad news is that more fires are starting randomly. Two of them are coverging right now.
