Sonic CD TAS (Upthorn/Nitsuja, 18:04.75) pt 2/2 I DID NOT DO THIS RUN. Before anyone asks... All credit goes to Upthorn and Nitsuja for this one, and Raiscan for putting it into an AVI format with Naofumi Hataya's soundtrack intact. Anyway, tool-assisted speedruns (http://tasvideos.org/Glossary.html#ToolAssistedSpeedrunTas) are all the rage these days, but this one hadn't been uploaded yet. So, here you go. Sonic CD, done in less than 20 minutes. Had to cut the ending short to fit this segment in 10 minutes, but, eh, I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. Relevant notes: - Aims for fastest time - Collects no items - Takes damage to save time - Ignores delays caused by bonus effects - Abuses programming errors in the game http://tasvideos.org/1148M.html Tags: sonic cd tool-assisted tool assisted speedrun speed run upthorn nitsuja tasvideos |

Damizean/Mark The Echidna's 3D Sonic Engine Test Digg it! http://tinyurl.com/3356u4 --- So over at SFGHQ, there've been pictures of a 3D fangame by Mark The Echidna and Damizean making the round. Both are really well-known figures in the Sonic fangaming community, so naturally, heads were turning - including mine (and all I do is lurk there). But of course, it wasn't likely that we'd ever get to play it, no sirree. Little did I expect that just casually, Damizean'd post the engine test in a chatroom I was in at the time. This is what 3D Sonic should be playing like, honestly. Entirely momentum-based gameplay, none of this "forced down a linear path, bottomless pits on all sides, speed pads galore" business. Loops are there to prevent you from moving forward if you lack speed, not just eye candy to be pasted every few blocks or so, where the camera pans out to show you being forced around the loop by way of speed pads. Anywhere in the world is yours to get at, provided you have the patience and the right kind of momentum to make it up there. Just like the old Sonic games for the Genesis. Now, granted, the test level is basically a linear path over a giant bottomless pit. But it's an engine test, not an actual level - it's forgivable. ;P Download: http://tinyurl.com/2wem94 (now on RapidShare, so I don't have to pay money to keep it up! :D) Controls: * W, A, S and D = move (think first-person shooter) * Mouse / Arrow Keys = move camera * Left Mouse Button / Spacebar = jump * Right Mouse Button / X = Hold and press jump to Spin Dash * Mouse Wheel = Zoom camera in and out * F1 = respawn (for when you fall into bottomless pits - which WILL happen if you're goofing around) * F2 = toggle "vomit camera" (camera will align itself with Sonic's angle, meaning it actually follows Sonic around loop-de-loops) * Left Ctrl = deactivate fancy water (if your FPS is somewhat reminiscent of a decent computer trying to run Crysis at max) To run the grassy stage, go into the Stages folder, and edit Stages.xml. Change 'stage folder="Stage1"' to 'stage folder="Stage2"' (or vice versa if you're changing it back). Save, and run the program again. Credits go to Damizean, Dimension Warped, Mark the Echidna, MistaED, Streak Thunderstorm, and The Taxman for creating this. Music is the Angel Island remix from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Yes, an MP3 is out for it already - came out on the album True Blue: The Best of Sonic the Hedgehog, which was released in Japan on January 22nd. It's the actual music for the engine test, so. Video by Shadow Hog; created with a trial version of FRAPS and Windows Movie Maker (because I'm too cheap to use anything better). Epic Team Fortress 2 Win 3/3 Well, okay, it was epic to us. So, Dust Bowl. Me, a bunch of friends from #srb2fun and the odd random fella were defending against a bunch of other random people. Good times. Except we were absolutely awful at it. We lost point after point so fast, that when it came to the final round, we had to defend the last point for twenty minutes. And yet... we did it. I personally blame how the point is right next to the spawn instead of a ways away like in most of the maps, but damn did it feel awesome. Footage taken by Omega, who is on YouTube as DeathByPixel. I don't think the text will be visible because YouTube's compression sucks (and the video was blurry to begin with), but all the things I said were via text chat. And for the record, I can't rocket jump. ^^; Tags: Team Fortress TF2 Dust Bowl Epic Victory Defense Video Computer Game SRB2Fun |

Right Said Fred - "Wonderman" So, the other day, Sonic 2 Beta was down, since it shares webspace with Sonic CulT and IT went down. Sucks, you know. But in the interim, the person asking for donations to get his data back and all that jazz posted this little tidbit. You remember Right Said Fred? Right, well, I know I don't. Apparently they're the "Too Sexy For My Shirt" guys. And apparently, back in 1994, Sega let them use Sonic prominently in their music video for their song "Wonderman" (which, as well, has lyrics mentioning a "spin attack" and so on, although Sonic himself is never named). It's... bizarre. Of course, I'm only the SECOND person to put up this video; I'll give credit to sh2001 for beating me to the punch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvymBkpKDzo if you're so inclined). But hey, I wanted another video on this account, so. I like how Hydrocity Zone went from an ancient ruin flooded with water and excessive references to some anime (I think it was "Laputa", a.k.a. "Castle in the Sky", a Studio Ghibli film) to some generic factory/business complex in the average city. Now THAT'S paying attention to the source material, folks! :D Tags: right said fred wonderman sonic 3 sega 1994 rejecting shiny baldness of the materialistic eighties |

Sonic's Schoolhouse - in-game footage (mostly) Alright, I got off my lazy ass and made footage of one of the few Sonic the Hedgehog edutainment titles: Sonic's Schoolhouse. My sound is teh broke, sadly (that's what the pop-up box is telling me before I really start playing), but let it not be said that I am not resourceful; I edited the MIDIs into the video roughly where they were supposed to show up. Sound effects would be too much work, though, so that aspect's broken; anything that DOES make a sound is an AVI video file, as opposed to WAV files. I also think the color is a little more washed out in the video than it is in-game, but nothing major. So yeah, that's what the game's like, really. You go into a hub, and choose a subject. You solve the problems on the four initial blackboards, get access to the six blackboards further inside, and solving any of THOSE gets you a power-up - a game token, a bus pass, and a key that allows you to skip any problem. As for these bonuses, I made sure to show them, too: both games are present, as is a brief flirt with the field trip thing. The games are rather basic, but there: one has me collecting rings (how many depends on what grade level "Recess" is set to) while evading enemies and Eggman - touching any of those guys loses all your rings, and you can't collect the ones you drop - you have to make do with whatever's left in the world. The other's a matching game which isn't exactly worth writing home about. And the field trip? Aside from Sonic's driving like a maniac, I think the video I watched should be a good indication of their quality. It's all generally factually correct - it's whether you actually WANT TO KNOW that's the problem, as is the voice actors telling you. So yeah, that's the game, really. Sonic's Schoolhouse - also clocks Sonic's Schoolhouse has some unusual stuff on the disc. Only a small amount, but it's there. Among these unusual things are videos of a random clock speaking like Barney, while describing some aspects of the game - the role Sonic takes in the final build. It's curious, really. Perhaps nothing worth noting, but something worth showing. And yes, that's really what Sonic sounds like. Tags: sonic the hedgehog sonic's schoolhouse edutainment dumb clock sega pc gumball help |
