Save the seals Save the seals Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals are slaughtered on the ice fields off Canada's east coast for their pelts. Over 95% of the seals killed during this hunt are just days or weeks old. If you were to witness this cruelty personally, your heart would break. Newborn seals skinned or bled alive ... clubbed to death ... or shot and left wounded to die under the ice. In the past three years, nearly one million baby seals have been clubbed or shot to death. Shockingly, the hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government! Please help us show the Canadian government the rest of the world will no longer stand for this inexcusable and senseless hunt. Two recent independent veterinary reports on the Canadian seal hunt, as well as IFAW video footage, have documented unacceptable levels of cruelty to baby seals. This hunt is a highly competitive activity, carried out over an extensive area, and under very unpredictable conditions. Haste is the rule, as hunters rush to immobilize as many baby seals as possible in the short time available to them. The Canadian government often misleads the public by comparing the commercial seal hunt to the killing of farm animals in the food industry. Unlike abattoirs, the seal hunt is an unpredictable, unmanageable hunt for wild animals which takes place under hurried conditions. It is precisely these conditions that have led some experts to conclude that this hunt can never satisfy the requirements of a humane hunt. Removing so many animals from any one population places the species at an unnecessary and significant risk. The history of wildlife conservation shows that when large mammals like seals have a price placed on their heads or hides the end result is almost always overexploitation. A recent scientific study released by IFAW also shows that in nine of the past eleven years, average ice coverage has fallen to well below levels seen over the last 37 years. This lack of stable ice is negatively impacting the harp seal population which requires sea ice for pupping and nursing its young. The Canadian government has indicated that it is dedicated to taking real action on global warming. Why do they not start by ending the unsustainable and unnecessary hunt for harp seals? Tribute To Paul Newman Paul Leonard Newman was born in January of 1925, the second son of Arthur and Theresa Newman in Cleveland, Ohio. The Newman's were a well-to-do family and Paul grew up in a nice home in Shaker Heights. Newman's father was the owner of a highly successful sporting goods store. Paul's mother and his uncle Joe's interest in creative arts rubbed off on him. By 1950, the 25 year old Newman had graduated high school, been kicked out of Ohio University for unruly behavior, served three years in the Navy during World War II as a radio operator, graduated from Ohio's Kenyon College, married his first wife, Jackie, and had his first child, Scott. 1950 was also the year that Paul's father died. When he became successful in later years, Newman said if he had any regrets it would be that his father wasn't around to see it. He brought Jackie back to Shaker Heights and he ran his father's sporting goods store for a short period. Then, knowing that wasn't the career path he wanted to take, he moved Jackie and Scott to New Haven, Connecticut where he would attend Yale University's School of Drama. While doing a play there, Paul was spotted by two agents who invited him to come to New York City to pursue a career as a professional actor. After moving to New York, Paul acted in guest spots for various television shows and in 1953 came a big break. He got the part as an understudy of the lead role in the successful Broadway play Picnic. Through this play is how he met actress Joanne Woodward, who was also an understudy in the play. While they got on very well and there was a strong attraction, Paul was married and his second child, Susan, was born that year. During this time Newman was also accepted into the much admired and popular New York Actor's Studio, although he wasn't technically auditioning. In 1957, with a handful of films to his credit, he was cast in The Long, Hot Summer (1958) co-starring none other than Joanne Woodward. During the shooting of this film, they realized they were meant to be together and by now, so did Paul's wife Jackie. After Jackie gave Paul a divorce, he and Joanne married in Las Vegas in January of 1958. They went on to have three daughters together and raised them in Westport, Connecticut. Free Lolita protest !! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 11, 2008!! If you are coming to the protest, please make a "Free Lolita" or "Save Lolita" t-shirt to wear. Make a large posterboard with the same message. Be sure the poster is easy to read and has a clear message - in either Spanish or English. If you're unable to come post a message on the Miami Seaquarium website on the day of the protest www.miamiseaquarium.com ...................................... www. miamiseaprison. com www. orcanetwork. org www. myspace. com/lolitawhale .................................... It's been nearly four decades since Lolita the killer whale was snatched from her family in the waters of Puget Sound. On Aug. 8, 1970, at the age of about three, Lolita (then called Tokitae) and her extended family of more than 100 orcas--her pod--were gathered in Puget Sound when capture boats and aircraft began hurling explosives into the water to herd them into a small cove. The orcas had been through this before, and split into two groups: the females and their young stayed underwater and tried to escape to the north, while the rest acted as decoys and headed east. At first the distraction worked--until the first group had to come up for air. While the rest of her family watched, Lolita and six other babies were lifted onto rubber mats on flatbed trucks; they were sold to marine parks and aquariums across the country. When she first arrived in Miami, Lolita had company. She was placed with a young male named Hugo, who, Garrett says, had been taken from Lolita's family 18 months earlier. For 10 years, the two orcas performed together as the Seaquarium's star attraction. But as Hugo matured, critics say he became too big for his tank, and he repeatedly bashed his head against the walls and windows, says Michael Royce, a former Seaquariam show master who worked with both whales. Hugo died of a brain aneurism in 1980. Today, Lolita is the only known survivor of that captured group, and her family--all members of the Southern Resident Orca Community, found in Puget Sound--have been added to the list of endangered species. At about age 40, the 20-foot, 7,000-pound female spends her days in a tank that's 80 feet across at its widest point and 20 feet deep. The whale would have to swim back and forth across her pool more than 6,000 times to keep up with her fellow orcas in the wild--who swim more than 100 miles on some days and can dive as deep as 500 feet. Many experts are quick to call those accommodations "cruel," as Bob Wood, president of the Seattle-based Global Research and Rescue, puts it--and Royce actually testified to the USDA about the small size of the tank back in 1978. (The tank has not changed since then. ) Orcas are highly intelligent and intensely social creatures, traveling and hunting in family units known as pods that never break up. Years of study have shown that family cohesion is the cornerstone of orca communities around the world: children stay with their mothers their entire lives. Each orca community also has its own diet, rituals, mating patters and language. MIAMI SEAQUARIUM MUST NOW LET LOLITA RETURN TO THE WILD !!! PETA TV_Running of the Nudes 2008 PETA TV_Running of the Nudes 2008 http://runningofthenudes.com/nude_conferences.asp A group of gorgeous activists held a series of sexy naked conferences around Europe to announce PETA's spiced up plan to save bulls. Since its advent in 2002, PETA's anti-bullfighting march, the Running of the Nudes, has had phenomenal success in educating countless people about the cruelty of the Running of the Bulls and bullfighting. More than 1,000 people from more than 30 countries attended these exciting events, but now it is time for these compassionate and fun-loving people from around the world (who wore little more than plastic bull horns) to take a spiced-up new approach to saving the bulls. We have decided to take the Running of the Nudes outside Pamplona. First, we have no wish to bring more and more runners -- and thus tourist money -- to a city that continues to support an outdated and barbarically cruel form of entertainment. Second, we want to take the Running of the Nudes to capital cities across the world, in countries from which tourists embark on trips to Spain. That means that we will hold mini--Running of the Nudes in Australia, France, Germany, the UK, the United States and elsewhere. The team of hot and hunky PETA representatives announced at the conferences that PETA will be using both cheeky events and serious actions in its new and improved anti-bullfighting campaign. PETA continues to actively campaign to end bullfighting by working with animal welfare affiliates to exert political and public pressure on bullfighting organizers and those who are permitting or supporting this cruelty. Among other things, PETA will provide support to other animal protection groups working to outlaw bullfights. There will also be some surprise campaigns, including a different style of protest in Pamplona, so keep checking this site and PETA.org.uk to see how you can help and to get the latest news! 2008 brings with it a new direction in PETA's fight to end the Running of the Bulls and bullfighting. Our focus is on ending the cruelty inflicted on the bulls, who are taunted, tortured, mutilated, and slaughtered all in the name of entertainment. There are new and better ways to help these animals, and in order to stay effective in our campaign we must be innovative and try to do everything we can. BBC news_Half of UK forces 'ready to quit' BBC news_Half of UK forces 'ready to quit' July 2OO8 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7498904.stm Almost half of UK military personnel are ready to leave the forces, a Ministry of Defence survey suggests. Some 47% of Army and Royal Navy respondents and 44% of those in the RAF said they regularly felt like quitting. Among the concerns raised by the 9,OOO servicemen and women surveyed were the frequency of tours, levels of pay and the quality of equipment and housing. The Ministry of Defence said the survey revealed "areas of concern" but that conditions were being improved. Sense of overstretch The first survey to assess attitudes across the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and the RAF revealed high levels of concern over morale, equipment and pay. The Regular Army is already short of some 5,OOO soldiers, amid worries that experienced young officers and senior NCOs are leaving at an increasing rate. A sense of overstretch was reflected in all three services, with 36% saying they were not happy with the level of separation from family and friends. Asked whether the frequency of tours had an impact on whether to leave or not, 38% of the Army said it had increased their intention to leave, while 59% overall said operation commitments and stretch made them more likely to leave. Overall, 37% believed operational tours came too often, though well over half believed the level was about right. Questioned about morale within their service as a whole, 59% of the Army rated levels as "low" or "very low". In the Royal Navy that was 64%, and the Royal Marines 38%. Within the RAF, 72% said morale across the service was low. Patrick Mercer, Tory MP for Newark and an ex-officer, said the findings reflected the pressures faced by military personnel. "I think the tempo of operations has produced such a level of stress on the families that it is no wonder so many are thinking of leaving," he added. However, 59% of the armed forces overall said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their own job. Some 69% of Army officers were satisfied with the sense of achievement they got from their work, compared with only 51% of soldiers. Only 37% of Royal Marines said that they regularly thought about quitting. The survey frequently showed wide differences between the levels of satisfaction expressed by officers in all services compared with other ranks. For example, 73% of Army officers said they had job satisfaction, compared with 57% of soldiers; 71% of Royal Marine officers compared with only 50% among other ranks, and 7O% of RAF officers compared with 5O percent of other ranks. As many as 64% of Royal Navy officers said they had job satisfaction, but only 48% of other ranks agreed that they were satisfied with their jobs. Asked if they felt valued within their service, 49% of ratings in the Navy said they did not, along with 44% of soldiers and 53% of airmen. 'High priority' More than half of those who responded to the survey were not satisfied with standards of military equipment and resources given to them to do their jobs, while some 4O% were unhappy with service accommodation, and 55% were dissatisfied with the standards of maintenance of their service housing. Yet the survey also showed that despite all the difficulties, especially the lengthy separations from friends and family, pride in serving within the Armed Forces remained high, with 93% of Army officers and 76% of soldiers saying they were proud to be in the Army. Pride in serving the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force was slightly lower, with 84% of navy officers and 62% of sailors proud to be part of the Royal Navy, and 89% of RAF officers and 69% of airmen expressing pride in their Service. Some 24,76O questionnaires were sent out, with almost 9,OOO service personnel (36%) responding between July and October 2OO7. The MoD said a number of measures had recently been introduced, including tax-free operational allowances for those on six-month tours and improved spending on accommodation. Defence Minister Derek Twigg added: "Since the survey was conducted, we have already implemented a number of important changes such as the recent pay rise, an adjustment to the operational bonus, and the introduction of childcare vouchers. "Over the next 1O years, we are also spending £8.4 billion on accommodation, an area that is a high priority for our personnel." Tags: UK Forces; Military personnel; RAF: Army: Royal Navy; Marines |

Angel's story_another PetSmart casualty This is absolutely awful ... can't stop crying ... the poor baby ... When a PETA investigator worked undercover at Rainbow World Exotics (RWE), an animal-breeding mill in Texas that supplies birds and small mammals to national chains like PetSmart and PETCO, she met a juvenile Goffin's cockatoo whom she dubbed "Angel." This little white bird was lethargic and appeared ill but was very vocal about RWE's neglect. Angel screamed and screamed all alone from inside a cage—for food, for attention, for anyone to come and help. For the six weeks that the investigator saw Angel waste away, the baby bird was never treated by a veterinarian. This neglect was dangerous, not just to Angel's health, but to other birds and even to workers and future bird buyers; many bird illnesses are transmissible to humans. When PETA's investigator asked if Angel could see a vet or if she could adopt the bird herself, the owner of RWE scoffed at the idea. Workers guessed at the illness and "treated" it by shoving a syringe down Angel's throat multiple times a day, pumping water in and out, in an amateur attempt to flush out undigested food. "Flushing" is potentially life-threatening if water is pushed into the lungs instead of the digestive tract. Over time, the baby bird's cries became feebler and Angel had trouble balancing and standing. At 4 months of age, Angel died, far short of the normal 40-year life span of these cockatoos. Goffin's cockatoos should be living in flocks of up to 100 birds, flying, foraging, bonding with mates, and nesting. Cockatoos like Angel at RWE are confined to barren wire cages and are either sold to pet stores at a very young age or used as "breeding machines" until no longer profitable. Bolton Steam Museum Bolton Steam Museum May08 The Northern Mill Engine Society opened its original museum at Atlas Mills in 1983 with five restored steam engines of various types on display. Steaming days were held six times a year using steam initially from the Atlas Mills boilers then later from our own package boilers. Educational Open Days were held on week-days during term time for schools in the district, sponsored by local companies. Disaster struck in 1990 when they were informed that Morrisons Supermarkets plc had bought the site for redevelopment and the museum was to be demolished. However, the company proved to be extremely helpful and agreed to relocate them to an old Cotton Store at the rear of the site. Since 1992 the Society, operating on an entirely volunteer basis, has been rebuilding the engines - that now number around 25 - in the new building. The engines are a cross-section of the main source of power that was used in the North West cotton mills, and the display is one of the largest collections of steam engines anywhere in the country. The Museum is unfortunately not yet regularly open to the general public but visitors are welcome by prior arrangement, mainly on their working days, Wednesdays and Sundays. Visits can be arranged at other times by contacting John Phillp, Hon Secretary. Tel 01257-265003 or email john.phillp@blueyonder.co.uk. Membership details are also available from the same contact. PUBLIC OPEN DAYS: Open Days for 2008 are planned for Sun/Mon 25/26 May Sun/Mon 24/25 August Sat/Sun 13/14 September Sat/Sun 3/4 January 2009 10 am - 4pm They have recently commissioned their new boiler so most of the engines will be working in steam. There is no admission charge, but if you wish to make a donation to support the Society, it will be most appreciated since they receive no other form of grant-aid. The museum is located on Morrisons Supermarket site (next to the petrol station) off Chorley Old Road Tags: Bolton Steam Museum |
