China tunnel collapse At least three people have been killed and 17 more trapped when a half-built subway tunnel in the Chinese city of Hangzhou collapsed, state media says. A wide section of road over the subway collapsed, trapping workers and creating a 50ft (15m) deep crater into which more than 11 vehicles plunged. The situation was made worse when river water poured into the tunnel, flooding it to a depth of 15ft (5m). Those trapped are believed to be mostly workers building the new metro system. Fire engulfs celebrity houses in Montecito - RAW video A fast-moving brush fire driven by 50- to 70-mph winds erupted Thursday night in the hills above Montecito in Santa Barbara County, burning 1,500 acres, destroying more than 80 homes and forcing evacuations of luxury neighborhoods, authorities said. The blaze, dubbed the Tea fire, broke out about 6 p.m. in the wealthy Cold Springs area of Montecito, where a number of celebrities live, and quickly overwhelmed firefighters with its speed. Overnight, the fire continued to move slowly west toward Santa Barbara. High winds that had wreaked havoc earlier in the night evaporated by midnight, allowing firefirefighters to concentrate on dousing embers and spot fires, said Geri Ventura, a Montecito Fire District spokeswoman. But forecasters are calling for a resumption of Santa Ana winds this morning. Gusts are expected to be weaker than the 70 mph winds that firefighters encountered early in the blaze. "Some were having a tough time keeping their chin straps on,'' Ventura said. By 4 a.m., the fire had grown to at least 1,500 acres. More than 80 homes had been destroyed, many of them along Sycamore Canyon Road, Stanwood Drive and Coyote Road in the area straddling state Highway 192, Ventura said. Fire officials fear the total could top 100 when daylight reveals the extent of the damage. "We lost homes mostly because this was a wind-driven fire,'' said Curtis Vincent, a Montecito Fire spokesman. "Showers of embers were raining down on properties." At least 1,000 people were evacuated but only about 30 opted to spend the night at an emergency shelter set up at San Marcos High School in Goleta, she said. When extra strike teams arrive this morning, there will be about 700 firefighters on the lines, Ventura said. This morning, 10 air tankers and nine helicopters are expected to begin an aerial assault on the blaze, helped by teams of hand crews. They will begin carving containment lines around the fire, starting at its northern perimeter, Ventura said. Three helicopters, manned by pilots and observers wearing night-vision goggles, made some water drops throughout the night. Calm winds and bright moonlight aided their mission, fire officials said. "Right now the fire's pretty much laid down,'' Ventura said around 4 a.m. "It's not going anywhere." More than 1,000 firefighters battled the blaze overnight. Departments included Santa Barbara County, the city of Santa Barbara, Montecito, Carpinteria, and the California Department of Forestry. Mandatory evacuations were in effect for an area above California 192, between Cold Springs Road and Hot Springs Road. Ventura said an evacuation center was set up at San Marcos Senior High School in Santa Barbara, and students at nearby Westmont College were told to gather in the campus gym. As the fire swept through the college area, at least two buildings were destroyed, but no injuries were reported, authorities said. Although two evacuation centers were opened, many Montecito fire-area residents chose to wait out the fire at hotels -- some of which were full -- or at friends' homes. Among those celebrities with homes in the area is talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, who owns a 42-acre estate there. Other famous property owners include actors Rob Lowe and Michael Douglas.
