Theremin - MORGEN (R. Strauss) The German composer, Richard Strauss, wrote this song for voice and violin. This theremin transcription is a mixture of the two parts - sometimes the vocal part sometimes the violin part. It is played on the Moog Ethervox theremin. It has always been a favorite of mine and, like many of R. Strauss' songs, it adapts very easily to transcription for the theremin. If you would like to hear a stereo version of this composition as it was performed on this video, you can find it on my website: (peterpringle.com/thereminmp3s.html). Pavarotti Theremin Tribute The Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, one of the great voices of the 20th century, died last week. I never met Signor Pavarotti but I saw him sing many times on the opera stage and he was always thrilling to hear. This piece, NESSUN DORMA from Puccini's opera TURANDOT, became one of Pavarotti's signature pieces and because of this, today it is one of the most popular and familiar of all romantic Italian tenor arias. I have performed theremin versions of this composition a couple of times with symphony orchestras, but whenever I play it I always see and hear Pavarotti in my imagination. Along with millions of other Pavarotti fans, I will miss his magnificent voice and powerful presence. Tags: theremin luciano pavarotti nessun dorma giacomo puccini peter pringle ethervox moog |

Scottish Cradle Song This piece, SCOTTISH CRADLE SONG, is arranged for Moog Ethervox theremin and Celtic harp. The harp is a 35 string replica - made by harpmaker Jay Witcher - of the famous 17th century Offogerty brass strung harp. Ancient harps that were strung with brass or bronze (rather than gut or nylon like modern harps) were highly resonant and had a haunting, bell-like sound. Julius Goldberg's 1929 RCA Theremin When Leon Theremin, the inventor of the theremin, came to America in 1927, he brought with him his assistant and business partner, Julius Goldberg. The RCA theremin you see in this video belonged to Mr. Goldberg, and he made several modifications to it over the years. He had custom "lightning bolt" antennas made for it but as you will see at the beginning of the video, I do not like using the jagged pitch antenna, and replace it with a standard RCA antenna before beginning to play. Goldberg also preferred a tone color that is closer to brass and reed instruments and altered the voltages that feed the vacuum tubes so his theremin would sound more trumpet-like than the standard RCA's. I believe he made these changes because he performed regularly in New York City in the early 30's and he may have thought the instrument had more audio/visual impact with his modifications. Up until the early 1980's this theremin remained the property of Julius Goldberg's widow who lived near Poughkeepsie, New York. The song I am playing is HYMNE A L'AMOUR (one of French singer Edith Piaf's biggest hits) written by composer Marguerite Monnot. Samuel Hoffman's RCA Theremin Dr. Samuel Hoffman took his 1929 RCA theremin with him when he moved from New York City to Los Angeles, California, in 1941. He eventually became world famous as "The Hollywood Thereminist" and the distinctive sound of his instrument can be heard on the soundtracks of over 40 major motion pictures of the 1940's and 50's. Alfred Hitchcock's SPELLBOUND (music by Miklos Rosza), the SciFi classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (music by Bernard Herrmann) and Cecile B. deMille's perennial THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, are just a few of the movies in which this theremin can be heard. I acquired this unique vintage instrument from the Hoffman family in 1998 and have carefully maintained it and enjoyed playing it ever since. It sounds today just the way it sounded when the late Dr. Hoffman played it at the "Casino In The Air" on top of mid-town Manhattan's Hotel Montclair in the 1930's. In order to give the camera a better view of the inside, for the purpose of this video, I removed the two cabinet doors (which normally remain closed). I am playing French chanteuse Edith Piaf's hit from the 1940's, LA VIE EN ROSE. CARITAS ABUNDAT This video begins with the original version of the music just as it was written in the 12th century (in Latin) by the German mystic and visionary, Hildegard von Bingen. Songs of this sort were meant to be sung in churches and cathedrals, where powerful echos and reverberations supply a kind of harmony. The effect here was supplied by a Lexicon MPX1. The harp is a reproduction of the famous brass-strung "Brian Boru" harp from the late medieval period, made by Maine harpmaker, Jay Witcher, in the 1970's. The theremin I used is a Moog Music Etherwave Pro. One more thing, the tunic that I am wearing in the beginning of this video is not a costume. It is a rare piece of genuine clothing surviving from the medieval period, sewn with silver and gold threads around the collar and cuffs, and intended to be worn by a knight. Surbahar And MIDI Theremin This is a short improvisation for surbahar and Moog MIDI Ethervox theremin. This surbahar was made for me many years ago by the Indian luthier Kanai Lal. The theremin, which is used here as a kind of "movable drone" is being played purely by the proximity of the neck of the surbahar to the vertical (pitch) antenna. Theremin volume is controlled by a small knob on the floor next to me. Tags: surbahar theremin MIDI experimental |

Theremin Meets MIDI Theremin This composition (called L'ONDINE) was played on a Moog Ethervox theremin using a Boss RC-50 Loop Station. It was filmed in a single take using two cameras and the sound was fed directly to a 24 bit digital recording device (unfortunately the YT compression turned it into "mono"). The celestial harp-like sounds you hear, which are triggered by the MIDI application of the Ethervox, are produced by two modules, a Roland JV 2080 and a Roland Fantom XR.
