Rocco Barroco in Cuba Italian fashion design Rocco Borroco presented his first-ever show in Havana, Cuba on Wednesday (April 23). Using a line-up of fresh talent from the island, Borroco put his Summer 2008 collection on show. "For me this is an immense pleasure, because these boys and girls have beautiful bodies. It is a pleasure to see them dressed in European fashion," Borroco said. Presented in the gardens of the luxurious Hotel Nacional, the show was open to a small gathering of artists, designers and Cuban models. Borroco is the biggest fashion name to have visited Cuba in some time. It has been years since the likes of Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were here. "I didn't know Rocco but he is a tremendous designer and a good stylist, and I am really happy to be here in the company of such important models," said one male Cuban model, Sergio Medina. "I am happy they accepted me on the casting, and also because I am working with such an important Italian designer," said one female Cuban model, Sunami. On the catwalk, it was a white, black and red collection for women and men with a lot of crystal, sparkling and silver accessories. Tags: Rocco Barroco Cuba Fresh Enter TV Sergio Medina Sunami |

Gere_Tibet Actor and Pro Tibet activist, Richard Gere on Wednesday (April 23) called on the U.S. administration to do more to stop the Chinese crackdown on Tibet. Speaking to lawmakers along with the special envoy to the Dalai Lama, Gere had some harsh words for the Bush administration. "I was beginning to wonder how we can trust this administration to do the right thing when they can't apparently find Tibet on a map. I am still waiting for the president to throw some weight behind this issue and become publicly engaged. We are looking for effective policies that yield results for those who are suffering now," Gere said. Some Tibetan leaders are demanding independence from China. But the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, says that he does not wish for Tibetan independence, but rather greater autonomy. Gere is urging the U.S. administration to impose more pressure on China to start dialogue with the Dalai Lama and stop the human rights violations against the Tibetan people. Some representatives are also calling on China to allow access to Tibet by U.N. delegations and the media. Tags: Richard Gere Tibet UN Naslovna strana Enter TV |

AUSTRALIA - MODEL BAN Australia's fashion industry dumped plans to use a 14-year-old model as the face of its annual showcase on Friday (April 11) after fashion magazines refused to publish the girl's photo because she was too young. Organisers of Australia's fashion week had planned to make 14-year-old Polish model Monika Jagaciak the star of its annual fashion shows from April 28 to May 2. But editors from Vogue magazine and Marie Claire threatened to pull coverage of the fashion events and called for organisers to follow guidelines in place in London and Paris, which place restrictions on models under 16 years old. "I found out she was fourteen which is when I pulled the plug because I just think that she's too young," said Australia's Vogue editor Kirsty Clements. "You're putting a girl to a catwalk hasn't even become a woman yet and that is a body image question that I think also tips in the sexualisation of young girls," she added. Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank said it was time publishers and fashion companies took a stand and lifted the minimum age of models to 16. After initially standing by its decision on Jagaciak, fashion week organisers on Friday backed down to industry pressure. "Effective immediately both male and female models participating in AFW (Australian Fashion Week) will need to be at least 16 years of age and must be represented by a reputable model agency," organiser Simon Lock said in a statement. "Those who employed a fourteen year old has a lot to answer, at a time when particularly young girls are under enormous stress in relation to their body image," said New South Wales Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrel. In September 2007, a twelve year-old model, Maddison Gabriel, dominated the headlines in Australia when she was announced as the inaugural face of Gold Coast fashion week. Japan Fashion Week - Ritsuko Kato Welcome to a new phase of fashion show. Japan fashion week is on its fourth day on Thursday (March 13, 2008), and one Japanese designer revealed her collection with a high-tech twist. What seemed like a white couture dress suddenly turned blue using blue light-emitting diode often known as LEDs. It is considered a cheaper, long-lasting and energy efficient alternative to normal light bulbs and is widely used on displays and lighting. "I wanted to illuminate the white dress in pale blue and LED reflected the perfect amount of wintery light," Ritsuko Kato, designer of "ELE TRA," proudly told Reuters in midtown Tokyo. Kato collaborated with a local installation director in order to find the best way to light her collection. They experimented with every lighting possible to create a dreamy and magical atmosphere. After several failed attempts, the team came up with an idea to wire blue LEDs underneath the white couture dress. Models, including Japanese top model Ai Tobinaga, also shined the catwalk with pastel-colored dresses, fur boots and even earmuffs. Kato worked closely with the makeup artists making sure that the models looked like ice princesses and winter babydolls. Light snow and endless applaud from the audience filled the finale as guests left the high-tech winter wonderland in excitement. "I've seen lighted couture dresses at museums before, but nothing quite like today's. It was amazing!" Risa Takagi, 28, fan of "ELE TRA" told Reuters. Though a total of twelve models in thirty-eight garments strode down the runway, many guests had only one thing in mind. "I thought it was going to be just another couture dress until I saw the lighting, which really matched the wintery theme," said Akiko Miwa, 19, still bewitched by the surprise. The first high brightness blue LEDs were invented by a Japanese engineer at Nichia Corporation in 1993, but most guests had no clue where the high-tech lighting came from. Kato launched her own collection "ELE TRA" last year in order to introduce a luxury brand for women who are pretty, classy and fashion conscious. Prior to the launch, she has been working as a chief designer for various brands including Kate Spade, OLD ENGLAND and TITE of JIONE SHOJI. Tags: Japan Fashion Week Ritsuko Kato Enter TV Fresh |

Vivienne Westwood's fashion show in Paris One of the world's most famous fashion designers enlisted the help of two young school children for her latest show. Vivienne Westwood, the grande dame of British fashion, got the youngsters and 34 of their classmates to paint the designs on her new collection. The theme? Ecological crisis. Fashion has always been a vehicle for politics for Westwood, who, most recently in 2005, joined forces with British civil rights group Liberty with a series of T-shirts and babywear with the slogan "I am not a terrorist" to draw attention to the preservation of civil liberties. Collection, titled "Chaos Point", was no different. Her vision was a group of freedom fighters trying to avert the planet from ecological disaster. ROBERTO CAVALLI Roberto Cavalli switched gear to use pretty broderie anglaise lace and picturesque floral embroidery in his womenswear winter 2008-09 collection shown in Milan on Wednesday, (February 20). The designer -- known for his leopard prints and gold accessories -- said he was inspired by actress Natalie Wood to create gowns for a sensual woman. Dresses were loose to a low hip with full skirts but trousers were thin-legged and cropped at the ankle. Cavalli used pale pink or lemon to embroider white dresses with flowers, or switched to glittering fuschia and purple on black satin for evening. The designer used lace -- either chiffon or broderie anglaise -- for soft, layered dresses in both angelic white and shadowy black. Tags: Roberto Cavalli Milan Fashion Week Enter TV Fresh |

Carolina Herrera_Fall 2008._ N.Y. Fashion Week Venezuelan-born designer Carolina Herrera debuted her countryside chic collection for fall 2008 at New York Fashion week. Herrera said the collection is about "the ease and the sophistication of the women who are wearing these clothes in the outdoors. But in the same time there is a lot of fantasy here. It's like you can wear them on a weekend in England or in France, a chateau in France, or in New York with your dogs and your horses and all that." The color palate is "very fall" says Herrera, filled with shades of oatmeal brown and licorice, blue, mustard and lemon drop. Accessories are very important for Herrera this season, as they completed the overall look she wanted to create, she said. "Well, accessories are important in a collection and everyday. I think that here, the most important are the hats that have all the feathers and the boots. And everything that is an accessory in this collection is very nice," she said. Models walked the runway donning fedoras in a range of colors decorated with ostrich feather plumes, some floating three feet behind the model over the runway. Herrera layered masculine tweeds, including double faced cashmere, window pane challis and shetland wools on top of print shirts, vests and riding pants. For daytime, Herrera included chic ensembles, including a flowing blouse with patchwork paired with a mustard color patchwork skirt. Other items included wool capes, tweed vests and velvet riding pants. Evening dresses were dotted with feathers whether around the shoulders or cinching the waist adding a dramatic touch. Textures and fabrics were mixed and matched -- adding drama to more casual styles and lending texture to elegant evening ensembles. In addition to feather embellishments, other lavish touches included fur vests and jackets and knee high boots. Herrera's fall 2008 collection embodied the feel of a sophisticated woman who wouldn't hesitate to wear a ball gown to dinner on the farm. Tags: Carolina Herrera Fall 2008. New York Fashion Week |

BAFTA AWARDS 2008. Daniel Day-Lewis gave his Oscar chances a welcome boost on Sunday by landing the prize as best actor at the British Academy Film Awards for his searing portrayal of a driven oil prospector in "There Will be Blood." French actress Marion Cotillard sprung the surprise of the night by scooping the best actress award for her role as singer Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose," while the romantic British wartime drama "Atonement" was picked as best film. Day-Lewis, already hotly fancied to land an Oscar in two weeks' time, fought off tough competition from Hollywood star George Clooney in the legal thriller "Michael Clayton" and Scottish performer James McAvoy for his leading role in "Atonement." Renowned for his intense preparation for roles, Day-Lewis won a best actor Oscar in 1989 for his moving performance as a man with cerebral palsy in "My Left Foot." The English-born actor who carries an Irish passport famously stayed in character on set even when the cameras were not rolling. Making a rare sortie into the media spotlight, Day-Lewis told reporters on the BAFTA red carpet, "I'm quite pleased to be part of the circus this year, as it's a good year." Veteran actress Julie Christie had been odds-on favourite with bookmakers to land the best actress award for playing a woman with Alzheimer's disease in "Away From Her" but lost out to Cotillard. "Atonement," which had led the field with 14 BAFTA nominations, failed to earn any of the main acting honours but did land the coveted best film award to give the home crowd something to cheer. British actress Tilda Swinton was named best supporting actress for her role as a morally corrupt corporate lawyer in "Michael Clayton," while Spanish actor Javier Bardem was crowned best supporting actor for his chilling portrait of a killer in the bleak, modern-day western "No Country for Old Men." "No Country for Old Men" also won the best director prize for filmmaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Playwright Ronald Harwood landed the award for best adapted screenplay for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," his dramatization of the autobiography of Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was totally paralyzed except for his left eye. Diablo Cody won the best original screenplay award for "Juno," a teen pregnancy comedy that is also in line for Oscar glory on February 24. Tags: BAFTA Daniel Day-Lewis Marion Cotillard "Atonement" |

Angelina Jolie in Iraq Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), on Thursday (February 7) met officials from the United Nations, the U.S. embassy and the U.S. military in central Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone. This is the actress's second visit to the war-torn country. The Hollywood star also visited Iraq last August, when she went to a makeshift camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) and met Iraqi refugees in Damascus, capital of neighbouring Syria. She said she wanted more information about IDPs and to discuss the problem with the Iraqi government, U.S. officials and aid workers, as well as to meet local Iraqis. Some 2.2 million Iraqis have fled sectarian fighting which killed tens of thousands after the bombing of a revered Shi'ite shrine in February 2006 and pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war. A U.N. envoy to Baghdad, Staffan de Mistura, said he was impressed at how well-informed Jolie was about the plight of refugees in and out of Iraq, asking what could be done to ensure refugees were better treated. The Iraqi Red Crescent estimates that between 1.5 million and 2 million Iraqis fled to Syria, most of the others going to Jordan. Roughly the same number are displaced within Iraq. An Iraqi Red Crescent (IRC) report on Thursday said that the number of IDPs returning to their homes had slowed significantly because people were still worried about security. Madonna, Gucci and U.N. for Malawi Pop star Madonna hosted a star studded event on Wednesday(February 6) on the lawns of the United Nations to aid Malawi orphans, the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) and -- controversially -- to celebrate a new Gucci store. Madonna and 11-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon walked the red carpet before heading inside the event. Actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and a very pregnant Jennifer Lopez were among many stars that turned up for the dinner that Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini said has already raised $3.7 million (USD). "This evening, what I really want to do is put Raising Malawi on the map," Madonna told Reuters. "I want credibility as a philanthropic organization. I want it inspire people. I don't want them to just write me a check, I want them to give me a piece of their heart." Gucci, which is owned by French retailer PPR has paid for the entire event and said all money raised will be split between Raising Malawi and UNICEF. But critics have questioned the use of the U.N. grounds to celebrate a new Gucci store and raised concerns about ties between Madonna's charity Raising Malawi and The Kabbalah Centre, a mystical form of Judaism practiced by the pop star. The accusations, made mainly by bloggers, appear to stem from the fact that Raising Malawi's founder Michael Berg is also co-director of The Kabbalah Centre. "I don't really pay any attention to that. I am grateful that Gucci has underwritten this event that's all that matters to me their generosity. There's always controversy surrounding anything that involves change," Madonna told Reuters. A huge tent was erected on the lawns of the United Nations for the event and security was tight. Alicia Keys, Timbaland and Rihanna were due to perform, while comedian Chris Rock was to auction off celebrity events, such as aerobics with Madonna and baseball batting practice with Yankee Alex Rodriguez. The star power doesn't end there. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made an appearance and rapper turned entrepreneur Sean Combs took a break from getting ready for his fall 2008 fashion show to support Madonna. Combs says, that when Madonna throws an event, you don't pass it up. Combs said "I'm a big fan of Gucci and what they represent." Asked if he was nervous about his first show in five years at New York fashion week, Diddy said, "Yeah, I don't know what designer isn't nervous about their fashion show?" Madonna's interest in helping Malawi orphans is personal -- she and her husband, director Guy Ritchie, are raising a young Malawian boy they hope to adopt. But the adoption has hit several stumbling blocks since they took him from an orphanage in late 2006 when he was 13-months-old. Rights groups have accused Madonna of using her fame and wealth to circumvent the country's adoption rules, although the singer has insisted she is following the law. Malawi's High Court is to hold a hearing this year into whether Madonna and Ritchie are suitable parents and should adopt the child. Tags: Madonna Gucci U.N. Franck Sorbier Franck Sorbier's Summer/Spring haute couture collection evoked everything from holidays by the sea to Tahitian celebrations, in an entertaining spectacle of the show. Sorbier's eclectic collection was inspired by four dominant themes. "This fashion show is like a photo album of happy memories from holidays for example," explained Sorbier. "In fact it tells 4 different stories, because I think it's important to be open and eclectic in a collection," he said. Models wearing white, organza and lace recreated the light atmosphere of friends picnicking, the scene was reminiscent of those recorded in pre-impressionist paintings. In contrast, models in the second morsel paraded bold prints that evoked haute couture's heyday in the 1930s. "So we submerge ourselves in the atmosphere of the late 1930s, where people discover the sea, people who have never seen the sea and who have never taken a holiday. (Although) You'll see that for this fashion show, we are not catering to people who work in factories but to privileged people," Sorbier joked. The next instalment of Sorbier's show completely reversed the tempo. The collection took on a new energy when amazonian models took to the catwalk accompanied by the banging drums of a Polynesian tribe. The couturier extended the highly energetic mood to the fourth segment, dominated by multi coloured, disco-inspired, party outfits. Haute couture clients can pay in excess of 100,000 euros for the high-end luxury clothes. For couturier Franck Sorbier the extravagance of haute couture is justified. Commenting on the difference between haute couture and pret-a-porter, Sorbier explained: "There isn't this human link with the client that there is with Haute Couture. Women who buy Haute Couture do see because they have needs, they might need a dress, a particular dress for a particular event. It's not the same when you go into a store, take an outfit off a hanger and try it on. This notion does not exist in Haute Couture. Couture is also a culture." The relationship between couturier and client is traditionally a strong one. Before ready-to- wear collections became the norm, haute couture clients would stick loyally by one couturier, who would cater for their every clothing need. GOVERNORS BALL PREVIEW Whether the show goes on or not, organizers of the Governors ball unveiled the look, feel and taste of their official Oscar after party which will follow the 80th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on February 24. That's because Oscar producers must still contend with the now 12 week long writers strike and its impact on the Awards and parties should it continue. Cheryl Cecchetto, who is chairperson for the ball, is optimistic that the night will go on as planned.. "I think that the writers strike is going to end, that's my personal opinion, not the Academy's. The Academy is concerned about all of the people that are out of work right now and they really acknowledge that, but with that being said, they're hear to also celebrate and acknowledge those filmmakers, from cinematographers to sound to writers etc., they have a job to do and to handle the Oscars for those who deserve them, being honored with it . . . " So should the celebration go on, expect a color design derived from the red carpet and the gold Oscar statue. Tables will vary from mirrored tabletops with deep red china and flowers to gold draped tables topped with lamps. On board once again to present the menu is Austrian-born chef, Wolfgang Puck. "Our motto for this year's dinner is refined simplicity, so everything is simple, the best quality, and then we change it to our taste. For example, we're going to start with a baked potato but we're going to serve it with a little Tsar Nicouli caviar, this is caviar coming from the Sacramento Delta, it's really, really delicious, so it's going to give the sweetness, the nuttiness of the potato, with a little saltiness of the caviar. Then, for our main course, we're going to have Snake River Farms steaks, which are the best steaks in America and we're going to serve them with our macaroni and cheese here, which we're going to finish with a little cheddar cheese and a little parmesan cheese and then we're going to grate black truffles on top and bake them in the oven. I think people are just going to love this." In addition to the steak, truffles and caviar, guests will also be served Alaskan Wild Salmon, shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels and tuna. Traditional chocolate Oscar statuettes dusted with gilt will adorn the tables and will double as dessert. Attendees' thirst will be quenched with Laurent Perrier Champagne, Sterling wines and Patron tequila. In all, organizers expect about 1,500 guests. Entertainment will be provided by the band Pink Martini and DJ Jason Bentley. Tags: Governors ball Oscar Wolfgang Puck menu party Cheryl Cecchetto |

DGA Awards Ethan and Joel Coen took home twin trophies for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film at the 60th Annual Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards. The brothers won the top DGA honor for their movie "No Country For Old Men," which has also been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Nominees, presenters and celebrity guests talked to the press outside the main ballroom of the Los Angeles hotel where the event was being held before making their way into the show. Actress Debra Messing came to hand out the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series. Actress Vanessa Williams showed up to name the winner in the Children's Programs category. And, Oscar-nominee Amy Ryan took part to announce the top pick for the Dramatic Series Night award. When asked what made the films in his category special, director and DGA Awards nominee Tony Gilroy told Reuters that he believed these movies reflected the unique qualities of the men who were responsible for creating them. "Uh, I think that the films, all the films nominated tonight, they're all very singular visions," explained Gilroy. "They're all, uh, they're not expensive films, and, a lot of writer/directors. Everybody had final cut. They're very, very pure, unadulterated visions of in a way. They're very much, I think after this morning, they're very much, uh, an example of the personalities of the people who made them in many ways." British actress Tilda Swinton, who has also been nominated for an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress for "Michael Clayton") this year, presented the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film nomination to director Tony Gilroy for "Michael Clayton," which also stars George Clooney. 47-year-old Swinton, best known for playing the part of a sinister white witch in "The Chronicles of Narnia," called her latest film a "labor of love." Director Julian Schnabel -- also nominated for the coveted Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film award for "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" -- told Reuters that he believes people across the globe will find his unusual film appealing. "They need it. It's a guide, it's a how-to guide: How to grab onto life and figure out what you do next." Meanwhile, French actress Marion Cotillard, who won a Golden Globe and has been nominated for an Academy Award for playing the lead role in "La Vie En Rose," said the chance to portray French singer Edith Piaf has been an important milestone for her. "Well it's, the role is unique," shard Cotillard. "You don't have, uh-- it's very rare to have the opportunity to tell a whole life, from 19 to 47 years old. It's, um, for an actor it's something huge." Legendary director Martin Scorsese handed out the top DGA award to the Coen brothers just before the two-hour show came to a close. Ethan Coen thanked the DGA on stage. And backstage his brother (and directing partner), Joel, shared the importance of being honored by one's peers. "I mean, um, it sounds-- everybody says it, and it sounds like a platitude, but it's really true," revealed Coen. "That, um, while it's nice to get the acknowledgement of, uh, critics or even audiences, um, it's-- there's something about being acknowledged by people who do the same thing that you do, which is quite different and very special." The Coens were only the second two-person team to win the highest Directors Guild honor, following Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for 1961's "West Side Story." The DGA winner almost always goes on to win the same prize at the Oscars. Adapted from Cormac McCarthy's novel, "No Country for Old Men" stars Josh Brolin as a good old Texan who makes off with loot from a drug deal gone bad, Javier Bardem as a ruthless killer on his trail, and Tommy Lee Jones as a sheriff tracking both men. The Coen brothers beat four other candidates, including Paul Thomas Anderson for "There Will Be Blood," about the rise to wealth of a California oil prospector; Sean Penn with his true-life wilderness adventure "Into the Wild"; Tony Gilroy for his directorial debut with legal thriller "Michael Clayton"; and painter-turned-director Julian Schnabel for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," who won the Golden Globe for best director a few weeks ago. "No Country for Old Men" has been nominated for eight Oscars in total including best picture, best director and best supporting actor for Javier Bardem's role as a sinister killer. The Coens' former cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld, also was a guild winner. Sonnenfeld, whose films include the "Men in Black" series, won a small-screen prize, receiving the award for television comedy for directing an episode of "Pushing Daisies." Unlike other major awards shows, the DGA ceremony is untelevised, making it a more relaxed gathering of Hollywood's elite. The DGA, which represents the directors of movies and television programs, began giving awards for film directors in 1949. SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS 2008. Before the string of awards for theatrical films were given out, the mob drama "The Sopranos" swept the board, taking the trophy for best cast in a TV drama and the best actor and actress awards for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco in an emotional finish to the series that ended in June. "No Country For Old Men," directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, took the award for best ensemble cast and Spanish actor Javier Bardem won the best supporting actor award for playing a cold-blooded killer in the movie. "No Country" also won the Directors Guild Award on Saturday and has eight nominations for an Oscar next month. SAG's best supporting actress award went to veteran Ruby Dee for her role in "American Gangster." Britain's Julie Christie, 66, won the best actress award for playing a woman with Alzheimer's disease in "Away From Her." Christie is also heavily tipped for an Oscar. "It's lovely to receive an award from your own union, especially at a time when we are being so forcefully reminded how important unions are," Christie said in one of several comments on Sunday about the bitter dispute between Hollywood screenwriters and movie and television studios. British actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the best actor award for his role as a greedy early 20th century oil baron in "There Will Be Blood," dedicated his trophy to Ledger Ledger, 28, who was best known for his role as a reluctant gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," was found dead in his New York apartment last week. The cause of death is still unclear. Day-Lewis, 50, said he had never met Ledger But he paid tribute to Ledger in his acceptance speech. The traditional Oscar ceremony on February 24, has been under threat from the three-month strike focusing on improved payments for work distributed over the Internet. But hopes of a settlement have risen since the two sides resumed talks last week. Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Eva Longoria and Cate Blanchett provided some much-missed star power on the red carpet at SAG after actors boycotted the Golden Globes and People's Choice Awards earlier this month in support of the striking writers.
