Benny is a Welsh coal miner. He is a radio ham fan. He is 23 years old, married to Molly. They have a son, young Ben, aged 4, and a new baby. They look after Benny's twin brother Billy, who is apparently a Disablbed and in a wheel chair. The mine is closed by the market forces. The Male Voice Choir stops singing, the village is dying. One night Benny takes Billy on a pub crawl. Drunk in a brightly-lit shopping mall, Benny vents his anger on a shop window full of multiple TV images of Margaret Thatcher's mocking condescension. In defiance, he steals a cordless 'phone. Later that night, Benny cavorts dangerously on the parapet of a motorway footbridge, in theatrical protest at the tabloid press. That same night, a cab driver is killed by a concrete block dropped off a similar bridge. The police come to question Benny; he hides the cordless 'phone under the cushion of Billy's wheelchair. Billy is different, he can receive radio waves directly without the aid of a tuner; he explores the cordless 'phone, recognizing its radioness. Benny is sent to prison. Billy feels as if half of him has been cut off. He misses Benny's nightly conversations with radio hams in foreign parts. Molly, unable to cope, sends Billy to stay with his Great Uncle David, who had emigrated to the USA during the war. Much as Billy likes Uncle David and the sunshine and all the new radio in LA, he cannot adjust to the cultural upheaval and the loss of Benny, who for him is 'home'. Uncle David, now an old man, is haunted by having worked on the Manhattan project during World War II, designing the Atom Bomb, and seeks to atone. He also is a radio ham; he often talks to other hams about the Black Hills of his youth, the Male Voice Choir, about home. He is saddened by the use of telecommunication to trivialise important issues, the soap opera of state. However, Live Aid has decynicised him to an extent. Billy listens to David and hears the truth the old man speaks. Billy experiments with his cordless 'phone, he learns to make calls. He accesses computers and speech synthesizers, he learns to speak. Billy makes contact with Jim a DJ at Radio KAOS, a renegade rock station fighting a lone rear guard action against format radio. Billy and Jim become radio friends, Reagan and Thatcher bomb Lybia. Billy perceives this as an act of political "entertainment" fireworks to focus attention away from problems at "home". Billy has developed his expertise with the cordless 'phone to the point where he can now control the most powerful computers in the world. He plans an "entertainment" of his own. He simulates nuclear attack everywhere, but de-activates the military capability of "the powers that be" to retaliate. In extremes perceptions change, Panic, comedy, compassion. In a SAC bunker a soldier in a white cravat turns a key to launch the counter attack. Nothing happens; impotently he kicks the console, hurting his foot. He watches the approaching blips on the radar screen. As impact approaches, he thinks of his wife and kids, he puts his fingers in his ears. Silence. White out. Black out. Lights out. It didn't happen, we're still alive. Billy has drained the earth of power to create his illusion. All over the dark side of the earth, candles are lit. In the pub in Billy's home village in Wales one man starts to sing; the other men join in. The tide is turning. Spring Equinox Wicker Man /|\ Spring Equinox When equal day meets equal night all nature's been renewed, and spirit old and spirit new are balanced in evening dew. Then we burn the wicker man. In death and rebirth ours souls fly flame and smoke, Chant and rhyme let it be a summer time. /|\ AWEN Y Gwir yn Erbyn y Byd My wicker man march 20th http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/T/timeteam/2007_ang_t.html http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/7280/ http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/7280/LLew.html Lyrics ( full version ) Heigh ho Who is there? No one but me my dear. Please come Say how do the things I'll give to you? A stroke as gentle as a feather I'll catch a rainbow from the sky and tie the ends together Heigh ho I am here. Am I not young and fair ? Please come Say how do the things I'll show to you? Would you have a wond'rous sight? The midday sun at midnight Fair maid, white and red, Comb you smooth and stroke your head hmm How a maid can milk a bull And every stroke a bucketful Willow's Song Willow's Song is easily the most famous of all the musical pieces that were performed in The Wicker Man. The track is an original composition. The song is also gone under the title 'The Siren Song'. A siren song is something which has an irresistible appeal, regardless of its bad consequences. The 'cow milking' reference in the last verse is inspired from the old English drinking song 'Martin Said To His Man', which goes: "I saw a maid milk a bull, fie, man, fie I saw a maid milk a bull, who's the fool now I saw a maid milk a bull, at every pull a bucket full Thou hast well drunken, man, who's the fool now " According to the film's associate musical director Gary Carpenter, the screen version was sung by Rachel Verney. Some have believed, however, that it was the Scottish jazz singer Annie Ross who sang the piece. Ross is believed by many, including Ekland herself, to have voiced Willow's dialog, although director Robin Hardy claims that this is untrue. An alternate version also exists in which Leslie Mackie ( who played Daisey in the film ) is reported to have sang to the same backing tracks. It is this version which is featured on the 'Silva Screens' soundtrack CD. In the original shortened release of the film, the song was hacked to bits via some of the worst editing cuts known to mankind. The edits are not even on-beat and make no musical sense whatsoever! Sadly, it is this version which appeared on the 'Trunk' issue of the soundtrack. In summary, the full recording of the film version appears on neither CD. Interestingly, an instrumental version , with a unique arrangement replacing the vocal line was released by Silva Screen as a downloadable MP3 via their website. The recording's lead flute line is not an original Magnet performance. Silva Screen records commissioned this version based on the original instrumental backing track. Willow's Song has been covered by numerous artists including Death In June, Doves and the Sneaker Pimps. Bizarrely, all three of these versions are based on the hacked-to-bits version and the artists had to compensate around the bad editing on their source material. Even more bizarre is the fact that the Sneaker Pimps got permission from Britt Ekland to use a sample of Willow's voice in order for them to credit the track as 'featuring' the actress. Brit's voice is widely believed to have not featured in the film in either dialog or song! The Sneaker Pimps version was released under the title 'How Do'. Spring Equinox celebrates the renewed life of the Earth that comes with the Spring. It is a solar festival, celebrated when the length of the day and the night are equal (this happens twice a year, at Spring and Autumn Equinox). This turn in the seasons has been celebrated by cultures throughout history who held festivals for their gods and goddesses at this time of year. Aphrodite from Cyprus, Hathor from Egypt and Ostara of Scandinavia. The Celts continued the tradition with festivities at this time of year. Like many periods of unrest throughout history, the prime mover for the Roman assault and invasion of Anglesey lay in the religious significance posed by Druidism. Romans saw Druidism as a serious menace - and Anglesey, spiritual home of the Druids, as the centre of that threat. The Romans were hostile to Druidism as it not only banded together individuals in a common focus but also allowed for an infrastructure of rebellion to flourish. So long as there were Druids in Britain, then rebellion and resistance would continue amongst the tribes and this, in turn, threatened the expansionism of the Empire itself. This challenge was seen as a significant - as well as strategic - threat as Anglesey remained the last bastion of Druidism in the British Isles. Its importance in any future Roman planning in terms of occupation and control could not, therefore, be underestimated. Where still here /|\ Tags: Spring Equinox wicker man willow song mother earth |

Iron Age fort and tomb /|\ Had been waiting for the new release of Mike's new CD. Then day come it was here and I was off in the car and with my walking boots and mini player a box of butties and a slug of something hot to drink and away I went. This is a little ritual I ve always done when mike has a new CD, This is how I road test the sound in nature and wild places and I must say I was blown away by it remarkable album..... Here is just a flavor of my day.... http://www.vortigernstudies.org.uk/artcit/castel.htm http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/interactive/timelines/british/index.shtml In the isolated Lleyn peninsula we can find a real ancient Iron Age hillfort connected to the Vortigern legends. Below the superb viewpoints from Yr Eifl (anglicised to 'the Rivals', but in Welsh 'the Fork') lies one of the most spectacular hillforts, Tre'r Ceiri. On a rocky heather-covered plateau below the eastern peak some 150 huts, that might have supported up tp 500 people, can still be seen clearly. Locally known as the 'Town of the Giants', the walls are still more than 4 metres high in places - no wonder how it received its name. The hight of the walls might very well be caused by its isolation and position 457 metres above sea level, which has prevented all too much stones being looted, as was the case for so very many similar hillforts. Bryn Celli Ddu - the Mound in the Dark Grove, a powerful and evocative site with the chamber concealing a single large almost cylindrical stone that to me seems to be apart of a petrified forest once, it looks like a fossil tree truck but also like the shape of an woman. many pagan's still leave an offering in ritual respect. It started life as a henge, with a stone circle with a bank outside and a ditch within the circle The ditch is still visible, and was partially backfilled when the mound was constructed. The restored mound seen today is somewhat smaller than when first constructed. The small stones just visible in the foreground are the kerbstones of the original mound. The white stone is a replica of the original, which should come back to north wales where it belongs, but sadly not, the stone was located once at the back of the chamber. It would have been covered by the original mound which was about twice the size of the reconstruction and did not have the opening at the west which you see here The town of Carnarvon is situated on the east side of the Menai Straits, close by the side of the Roman station of Segontium, which was connected with Chester by Watling Street. There is said to have been a fortress here shortly after the Conquest, but the real beginning of the importance of Carnarvon was the erection of the magnificent castle there by Edward I., immediately after his conquest of the principality. The work was commenced in 1283, and occupied more than ten years. In 1284, the birth of Edward II., the first Prince of Wales, took place at Carnarvon. During the Civil War the castle changed hands several times; at length, in 1646, it was taken and held by the Parliamentary forces under General Mytton. Portions of the old Roman wall of the city still exist, and numerous interesting relics have been found Tags: Iron Age megalithic tombs ancestor druid mother earth Short Film Mike Oldfield |

Spring Equinox .....Gwyl Canol Gwenwynol The Druids Prayer The Druid's Prayer (Welsh: Gweddi'r Derwydd) or "Gorsedd Prayer" (Gweddi'r Orsedd) is a prayer composed by Iolo Morgannwg which is still a staple in the ritual of both gorseddau and Neo-Druidism. Neo-Druids sometimes substitute the words y Dduwies ("the Goddess") for the original Duw ("God"). Llyma weddi'r Orsedd o Lyfr Trehaearn Brydydd Mawr Dyro Dduw dy Nawdd; Ag yn Nawdd, Pwyll; Ag ymhwyll, Goleuni; Ag ymgoleuni, Gwirionedd; Ag yngwiwirionedd, Cariad; Ag ynghariad, Cariad Duw; Ag ynghariad Duw, pop Gwynfyd. Grant, God, Thy protection; And in protection, reason; And in reason, light; And in light, truth; And in truth, justice; And in justice, love; And in love, the love of God; And in the love of God, gwynfyd. God and all goodness. Dolbadarn Castle is fairly regarded as one of the finest remaining castles of the native Welsh Princes. The castle stands on a rocky hill some eighty feet above Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris in the Llanberis Pass and is listed as a World Heritage Site. Constructed by the legendary Llywellyn the Great (Llywellyn ap Iorwerth) before 1230 to guard the main route through the Snowdonia mountain ranges, its position at the tip of Llyn Padarn allowed the garrison to blockade any movement through that part of the north. Bryn Celli Ddu (the mound in a dark grove) is the best passage grave in Wales. It started as a late Neolithic henge or ritual enclosure, with a stone circle surrounded by a bank and internal ditch. A later passage grave was built inside the ditch; the north-east entrance to the burial chamber is retained by a kerb of stones, which with the dry-stone walling of the outer passage, creates an elaborate forecourt. The narrow passage (a torch may be useful) is 8.2m (27ft) long and 0.9m (3ft) wide with a low shelf along its north (right) side. This leads to a higher, polygonal burial chamber, 2.4m (8ft) wide, covered by two capstones. In the chamber is a tall, rounded, free-standing pillar, whose purpose is unknown. The spiral carving on the first stone on the left of the chamber entrance may be not authentic. The whole passage was covered by a cairn, but the existing mound is a partial reconstruction, kept small so that three stones from the old stone circle and two other features behind the chamber, at the centre of the henge, can be seen. These other features are a pit (in which excavations revealed charcoal and a human ear-bone) and an upright stone carved on both faces and across the top with zigzag and spiral lines. The original pillar is now at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, but a replica has been set up in its presumed original position. The site was visited from 1699, and excavated in 1865 and 1927-31. In the passage and in the chamber excavations revealed both burnt and unburnt human bones, a stone bead, two flint arrowheads, a scraper and mussel shells. Outside the entrance and the ditch, a small, unusual ox burial was found. On the ridge to the north of the site (on the right of the lane as you return) is a tall standing stone. Nos Gwyl Fair Ψ Imbolc /|\ Nos Gwyl Fair Imbolc What I tried to do with this film to celebrate imbolc was to make the whole thing in one day. I shot the photos late evening and I was lucky as the weather has been bad. Set up a small alter to make an offering and later filmed it. I manage to get the film up loaded on the YOU TUBE just before midnight few minutes to spare. So it can be done SHOT FILMED EDITED But I don't think I would do it again...to much like hard work!!! BUT TO SEE THAT SKY TODAY WAS FANTASTIC.. and great timing for Imbolc,,, talk about divine inspiration. /|\ Imbolc focuses on the Goddess, both as Mother - as she gave birth to the Sun God at the Winter solstice, and as the Maiden. Brigit was originally considered a form of the Triple Goddess. Imbolc is a feast dedicated to the Goddess in her maiden aspect, in her guise as Brigid, Bridget, Bride, Brighid, Brigit or Brig - goddess of learning, poetry, prophesying, craftmanship, agriculture and healing. Imbolc is considered a traditional healing time and it is a good time to consider ways to improve your health. Imbolc is still a special time for Pagans. As people who are deeply aware of what is going on in the natural world they recognise that there is strength in cold as well as heat, death as well as life. The Horned God reigns over the Autumn and Winter and and although the light and warmth of the world my be weak he is still in his power. Many feel that human actions are best when they reflect the actions of nature, so as the world slowly springs back into action it is time for the small tasks that are neglected through the busy year. Rituals and activities might include the making of candles, planting spring flowers, reading poetry and telling stories. Some Pagan history page. YULE Winter solstice Gwyl Canol Gaeaf /|\ Gwyl Canol Gaeaf (Winter Solstice) Yule Druid ar Môn 22nd DEC 2007 Holly King / Santa Claus: There are as many theories of a "historical" Santa Clause (or "Saint Nicholas") as there are ethnic cultures. As an Keltic folk archetype however, the old man wreathed in holly is the Holly King. He represents the "waning year", the "old year", or the "dark half" of the year. At winter solstice the Oak King (or the Sun, or the New Year) is born, and the Holly King's reign is over. Mistletoe: The mistletoe was sacred to the Druids. The custom of kissing under the mistletoe may derive from the custom of enemies refraining from killing each other if they should happen to meet under its sacred branches. Presumably the custom became friendlier and friendlier with time. Other scholars say that the lusty connotations of the plant derive from the belief that the clusters of white translucent berries were drops of the God's (or the Oak King's) semen. The Oak King takes the place of the Holly King, and rules the waxing year, or the "New Year Candles: The extinguishing of candles at winter solstice rituals (including Amaltheia's) represents the deep darkness of the longest night. Their relighting shows us that the light will return to us. In the moments of total darkness, we are "between the worlds": between the old year's death and the new year's conception. Yule Log: The word "yule" is from the Saxon word for "wheel". The Yule Log,O.E. geol, geola "Christmas Day, Christmastide," from O.N. jol (pl.), a heathen feast, later taken over by Christianity, of unknown origin. The O.E. MAKING PRAYER FLAGS ABOUT PRAYER FLAGS OM MA NI PAD ME HUM When you hang them and don't allow the flags to torch the floor The hoisting of flags to ensure good fortune is one of the many customs within the nomadic communities of Tibet that have changed very little for several thousand years. However, the meaning of this ritual has gradually evolved from being of militaristic to religious significance. That the original use of flags in Tibet was militaristic is illustrated by the term Ru-dar or banner. Ru refers to gathering of nomads before moving on together to fresh pastures and thus, in an archaic sense this assembly referred to a kind of army. The banners (ru-dar) found in ancient literature were military flags. The flying of flags began to acquire religious significance in the Bon tradition and it may be observed that the actual design of the flags also gradually changed. In the corners of some of these flags were images of a tiger, a snow lion, a garuda, and a dragon, and in the center was a horse, around which was written a Bon mantra and a line which read, "May the horse of good fortune run fast and increase the power of life, influence, fortune, wealth, health, and so forth." This writing of mantras on cloth to produce a flag of religious significance can be traced to the immaculate g.Yung-drung-gtsang-ma-zhang-zhung, a collection of Bonpo teachings, which say that when a mantra is wrapped in five colored silk and placed high in the mountains, it will provide whoever sees it with the good fortune to become enlightened. If you attach a mantra wrapped in this way to the top of a victory banner and pray to it, worship it, and make precious offerings to it, then, according to tradition, you will accomplish all your goals. The meaning of this Bon mantra needs further investigation. Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown upward as offerings to their deities and will bring benefits (such as happiness and good health) to all who hang them, as well as their families, loved ones, neighbors, and all people throughout the world including even enemies. SKERRIES LIGHTHOUSE TRIP SKERRIES LIGHTHOUSE TRIP HOT DAY 7th OCT 2007 WATER LIKE GLASS ON CHIFF'S BOAT THE SKUA. The Skerries Lighthouse Position 53 25.'3 N 4 36'.4 W The rocks upon which the Skerries Lighthouse stands are at the end of a low tract of submerged land North-East of Holyhead which lies directly in the path of many of the major shipping lines from Liverpool and Ireland. The lighthouse gives a guide to passing shipping and a warning of the dangerous rocks. A light was proposed on the Skerries as early as 1658, by Henry Mascard, a private speculator who saw the lucrative possibilities of the tolls that could be levied on the site, but this was opposed by Trinity House, as was a petition in 1705 from the Irish Sea Traders. In 1714, William Trench, who actually held the lease of the Skerries was granted a patent by Queen Anne for the building of a light. For a Crown Rent of £5 a year, Trench was given the right to levy dues of one penny per ship and twopence per ton of cargo, but far from being the profitable venture which he envisaged, the Skerries proved to be his ruin. When the light was first kindled on 4th November 1717, William Trench was wealthy but traders and mariners evading payment of dues caused him to fall heavily into debt. He died in 1729 a ruined man. After Trench's death the lease passed to his daughter, and because of the nature of the debt, an Act of Parliament was passed to give his family sole claim to the Skerries. This act caused a great deal of embarrassment to Trinity House. In 1834 when an attempt was made to purchase the patent for this lighthouse, the proprietor, Morgan Jones, asserted that under this Act he was absolved from any responsibility to sell. For five years after the Act of 1836 which empowered Trinity House to purchase all private lighthouses, he opposed the purchase, the Skerries by this time being an extremely profitable light. It was finally purchased by Trinity House in 1841 for over £444,984, the last privately owned lighthouse in the British Isles to be bought by Trinity House. The original coal-burning grate which surmounted the tower was replaced in 1804 by an oil lamp, and was subsequently converted to electric operation in 1927. The lighthouse was converted to automatic operation and demanned in 1987 and is now remotely monitored and controlled from The Trinity House Operations Control Centre at Harwich. Great little song by Clash English Civil War (Traditional; Arranged by Strummer/Jones) When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah, tala He's coming by bus or undergound, hurrah, tala A woman's eye will shed a tear To see his face so beaten in fear And it was just 'round the corner in the English Civil War It was still at the stage of clubs and fists, hurrah, tala When that well-know face got beaten to bits, hurrah, tala You face was blue in the light of the screen As watched the speech of an animal scream The new party army was marching right over our heads All right There you are, ha, ha, I told you so, hurrah, tala Says everybody that we know, hurrah, tala But who hid a radio under the stairs? Who got caught out unawares? When the new party army came marching right over our heads Yeah, yeah, yeah When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah, tala Nobody understands it can happen again, hurrah, tala The sun is shinning and the kids are shouting loud But you gotta know it's shinning thought a crack in the cloud And the shadow keeps falling when Johnny comas marching home http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Civil_War_(song) Tags: SKERRIES LIGHTHOUSE TRIP SEA ANGLESEY |

Bwlch y Moch Just a nice day out for a walk, took my video camera with me. Had been humming this tune all day, Something I herd on you tube. Filmed 26 08 2007. No one is certain how the Pyg Track came by its name; possibly from Bwlch y Moch (Pigs' Pass) over which it passes. (It is sometimes spelt Pig Track). "Pyg" in Welsh also means 'pitch' and may refer to the dull black pitchy appearance of the path in one location; or it may have been the route used to carry pitch up to the copper mines. A third possibility is that it was named after the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel nearby, by the early climbers who stayed there." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowdon The music is called 'The Parting' a traditional Cornish tune play by 'Harpers Bizarre' Harp Ensemble Cornwall Harp Centre run by Sarah Deere-Jones & Phil Williams Who kindly give permission to use the music Take a look at there page. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m15z9G0wKmM http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=phantombagpiper Tags: Snowdon Wales Walks Miners Pyg track Harp Magical Light |

Y Ddraig Goch Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau---Land of Our Fathers I made it up" that was the bald admission t on Newsnight by Martin Davies who propagated the myth that Jimi Hendrix had recorded Mae'n Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. After the supposed Hendrix track was played on Newsnight 35 million people visited his site RedDragonHood to listen for themselves. Martin told Newsnight "A lot of people had a lot of fun with it. The response from Welsh people around the world was amazing - 35 million hits on the website - I could be accused of hoaxing but it was only a bit of fun". Martin persuaded his friend John Ellis - who formed the 70s punk band the Vibrators then went on to play with the Stranglers, Peter Gabriel and many others - to play a Jimi Hendrix style version of Land of my Fathers. Martin put it on his website with a story about its discovery expecting a few hundred hits. It was meant as a small scale joke but millions of Hendrix fans around the world took up the story and Martin then felt unable to confess to the hoax until Newsnight put him on the spot. http://www.thereddragonhood.com/pages/jimi.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/newsnight/2007/02/newsnight_solves_hendrix_welsh_national_anthem_mys.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6406961.stm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4hzEYg5Naw http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_Ddraig_Goch http://www.welshdragon.net/resources/Historical/origins_flag.shtml Tags: Ddraig Goch Welsh Anthem Dragon Tich Gwilym Hendrix |

Môn Mam Cymru Views of Ynys Môn, Isle of Anglesey (Môn Mam Cymru) Mother of Wales put to the music Dougie MacLean THE GAEL and a sample of the fron male voice choir, The film was inspired by velvetkrew . WE LIVE IN A DYNAMIC WORLD WHERE WE ARE ONE WITH ALL THINGS. WE JUST NEED TO KNOW IT AND TO RESPECT IT...)O(...SOME OF US DO Ψ St Dwynwen: 5th century princess, Dwynwen, became patron saint of Welsh lovers, when God gave her the power to grant the wishes of true lovers. Although already engaged, Dwynwen fell hopelessly in love with Maelon. Knowing that the relationship could not last, an angel appeared in Dwynwen's dreams and froze Maelon, turning him into a block of ice. Heartbroken, Dwynwen turned to God and prayed that Maelon be thawed, and although she would never marry, her name became forever linked to the lovers of Wales. According to legend, the two saints used to meet weekly near Llanerchymedd, near the centre of the island. St. Cybi would walk from Holyhead, facing the rising sun in the morning and the setting sun in the evening. St. Seiriol, travelling in the opposite direction, would have the sun to his back during his journey. They were thus known as Cybi the Dark (since he was tanned during his journey) and Seiriol the Fair. St. Seiriol's Well is reached by walking up a path past a fish pond built by the monks. The well is enclosed within a small building, most of which is brick representing reconstruction in the 18th century; the flooring and lower parts of the wall are probably older. The foundations of another small building may be seen just next to the well (in the lower left of the picture above). This is popularly thought to be the remains of St. Seiriol's cell, where he would have lived, but there is no evidence to support this and its shape is not like other 6th century hermitages. http://www.anglesey-history.co.uk/places/penmon/index.html http://www.anglesey-history.co.uk "The Gael" appears in two places in LOTM----during "The Kiss" and "Promontory".
