You Have the Watches, We Have the Time - Afghanistan October 2008 In the wild and lawless lands of rural Afghanistan the Taliban are playing a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with US troops. Under US commander Capt. Workman we march deep into Taliban country. This region is only 60 miles from Kabul, but it feels like the end of the earth. The Taliban have claimed four new victims, and US troops are in pursuit. In each new village the story is the same; the Taliban has just left. The soldiers march through dusty villages and rolling cornfields. They are spared the dangers of open battle, but psychological warfare is no easy option. Unfortunately for our soldiers they dont get the opportunity to go face to face a lot of the time with the enemy, says Capt. Workman. When the enemy is hiding in the shadows you have a lot of time for thinking. This film provides a rare glimpse of the courage and moral conflict of warfare. Its easy to go out and be killed, says Capt. Workman, but can you go and kill someone else? Tags: Journeyman Pictures Afghanistan taliban |

The End Of Globalisation - World October 2008 The global financial machine has ground perilously close to a halt. This timely film explores what went wrong with economic globalisation. How could the financial world have miscalculated so badly? We chart financial liberalisation in East Asia, privatisation in Latin America, the reckless transition to capitalism in Russia and Chinas more cautious evolution to a market economy. Our vision of the economy is a caring economy, an economy where the State has to be the fundamental engine, not the market explains economic reformer President Hugo Chavez. We ask whether the policies of lending institutions like the IMF have exacerbated financial crises, as its rescue packages have ended up servicing bank debt. Of course these packages end up rescuing private lenders from the consequences of their own actions, admits economist Paul Krugman, echoing concerns about bailout loans. Death of the American Dream? - USA October 2008 The financial crisis is hitting middle-class America, as families are forced onto the streets. Some say its the end of the American dream but for others this is a chance to redefine whats important. In California, the credit crunch has had a devastating effect on families that bought expensive houses with no down payment and high interest rates. The houses wont sell and their owners are left with nothing. A growing number of people find refuge in car parks, sleeping in their vehicles until they find another job. This is the flipside of American life. No-one is looking out for you. Craig used to run a successful business but now lives in a borrowed van with his wife and two kids. Despite the setback, he isnt bitter. Life in a car park has made him redefine the American dream for himself. Now he measures abundance in personal happiness rather than material possessions: I'm less encumbered. and I become more pleased with each new step. Barbara is another casualty of the credit crunch. She lost her job as a notary and had nowhere to go. After a few months sleeping in her car, shes found housing again but the experience was an eye-opener: People who are broken by being homeless are dependent on all of their belongings and possessions as their identity. And that isn't who they are. It seems many more will have to find out for themselves. Tags: Journeyman Pictures USA America financial crisis credit crunch jobs |
