Rebuilding Schools for China Quake Victims - OB.org In China, Operation Blessing is helping to rebuild a brand new school and dormitory for quake victims. The school will replace one that collapsed due to the recent earthquake. Three-hundred of the students were killed. The surviving 600 students will live in the dorm and attend the new school. Balanced between trauma and uncertainty, the students try to have normal lives. But they remember what happened on May 12, and they still talk about it. The need is great, because hundreds of poorly-constructed schools collapsed in the earthquake. These new schools will be well-built, and will serve the students for several years until permanent facilities are designed. Myanmar: Clean Water and Medicine - OB.org When Cyclone Nargis slammed into Myanmar (Burma), it claimed thousands of lives and destroyed whole villages. Those that survived the storm are in urgent need of emergency relief. Operation Blessing is funding a team of local doctors who are able to access some of the worst affected areas. We have 5 teams that will be working for three months to provide life saving medicines to an estimated 60,000 patients. With flood water and even rotting corpses polluting most drinking water supplies, fresh water is a priority need for victims. Many villages still have deep water wells, but no electricity to pump the water out. OB worked with a local partner organization to purchase heavy duty diesel generators, allowing them to pump life saving fresh water to the surrounding communty. Through this simple project we are serving 20,000 victims and helping them avoid sickness and disease as they rebuild their lives. Six Degrees of Separation Means Clean Water for Niger It took less than six degrees of separation to bring together one mission of drilling waters wells for remote villages in Niger. In the early 90s, Yacouba Seydou left his native Niger to attend school in Oklahoma. During his academic career, he attended a local church and gained the support of members who wanted to reach out to those in need in Africa. In the midst of their partnership, the church came upon a well drilling rig and was able to obtain it for long-term use in training Nigeriens how to drill their own wells. Teams were sent from Oklahoma to Niger twice a year to work with the locals. The partnership between Hosanna Institute and Operation Blessing International continues to break ground in more ways than searching for water. In January, OBI along with German nonprofit Humedica and Hosanna Institute opened a hospital in Niger that will provide a 24-hour maternity ward and free care to children under age 5. website: http://www.ob.org Tags: clean water Niger wells drilling Oklahoma Operation Blessing partnership |

First Hand Report from Icy China - OB.org The snow storm hit during one of the busiest travel seasons in China -- the Lunar New Year, on Feb. 7. Many residents are still left to battle the bitter cold and destruction left by a month of heavy snowfall. Government officials report the recent snowfall is the largest in more than 50 years and estimate economic loss at $11 billion to date. Early reports state 300,000 homes have been damaged and millions of crops destroyed. Operation Blessing China is focusing their relief efforts on at risk populations - namely the orphans, the elderly and the isolated living in more remote areas still without power and unable to access aid because of poor road conditions and lack of transportation. In their determination, OBI crews even pushed their truck -- loaded with food, winter jackets and blankets -- up a muddy, mountainside road in order to reach residents in need. Local residents and villages have been drastically affected by the damage of crops. The teams will also survey the extent of the damage of crops and villages and find ways to support the local residents in order to rebuild. Wheelchairs Offer Freedom for Moroccan Residents - OB.org Something as simple as a wheelchair makes a significant difference in the quality of life. In developing countries like Morocco, people with physical disabilities face many challenges. Not only do their families need to help them with medical issues, but some people may also suffer from isolation, not being able to get around the village, or getting out of bed. This 16-year-old girl has cerebral palsy and is confined to her home unless her family members carry her out. Previously, she had her own wheelchair but it broke due to the rugged terrain surrounding her village. Her older sister carried her on her back to the distribution site so she could get a new wheelchair. Louban was delighted when she sat in her new wheelchair for the first time. Free Wheelchair Mission contacted Operation Blessing to help coordinate the effort to ship the chairs to Morocco. Together with Gateway Medical Alliance, a humanitarian medical relief and development program for Morocco, 550 wheelchairs were distributed to area residents. In 2007, OBI helped distribute more than 1,300 wheelchairs to people in need around the world. Somaliland's Forgotten Children - OB.org SOMALILAND, Africa -- In a remote orphanage in the heart of Somaliland, hundreds of children cram into small spaces to try and sleep through the night. With no running water and no way to keep the children clean, disease and infections were rampant among the orphans. War and poverty have spiked the number of children without parents or caregivers and orphanages are bursting at the seams. This orphanage in Hargeisa is no exception. In May 2007, Operation Blessing (OBI) staff visited the orphanage and found 327 children living there with only one toilet and no running water.Through the Orphan's Promise program, OBI provided support to renovate the facility. Six months later, the orphanage has showers, sinks, spigots and toilets as well as other water access points in and outside the building. "For the 13 years I have been here, there has never been a shower," said Bashir, an older orphan. Bashir's parents were killed when a grenade hit his home. Now that the orphanage has clean drinking water, it has made a radical difference in the lives of these orphans and reduced the number of illnesses.
