Saturday's rally proves he may be trailing in the polls but he cannot be ignored. They call it the Ron Paul revolution and on Saturday it came to Philadelphia. Enthusiastic supporters flooded Independence Mall to see the ten-term Texas congressman who is running for the Republican presidential nomination is fueled by online support. "It has been said that there were two or three dozens spammers running the campaign and it looks like there's a lot more," Congressman Ron Paul said. Paul attracted attention after raising a record $4 million in one day through online donations. His message, which draws support from across the political spectrum, includes a passionate defense of civil liberties, a vow to abolish the tax code and a fierce opposition to war. "Bring our troops home now," Paul said. Paul has come under fire for calling the war on terrorism "fictitious" and for saying the 9/11 attacks were a response to U.S. foreign policy ideas he repeated on Saturday. "Those individuals who would come here and do us harm have hatred in their hearts. but let me tell you they don't hate us because we are free and prosperous. That is not the reason. If we don't understand that we cannot solve our problem," Paul said. But with an expanding war chest and adoring crowds the 72-year-old grandfather can relish his status as a political maverick. He said he is the one to shake things up. "Everybody's fighting over a piece of the pie in Washington. We stand for exactly the opposite," Paul said. Current polls have Paul drawing support from a little more than three percent of Republicans. Ron Paul, R-Texas, the outspoken libertarian White House hopeful often dismissed by his rivals and the punditocracy as a fringe candidate, was all smiles Wednesday as he bandied about the first-in-the-nation primary state, New Hampshire. "It's pretty exciting!" he told ABC News. Long treated at debates as the cantankerous old uncle you don't want to get started talking about the gold standard, Paul had big news. Announcing a relatively astounding haul -- $5.1 million -- in the fundraising quarter that ended Sunday, Paul is knocking on the door of the top-tier candidates in the race. "It's really fascinating," Paul said, seeming as surprised with the news as was much of the rest of the political world. "I think the time is right. People are really frustrated -- frustrated with both parties, frustrated with the war." Paul's campaign announced Wednesday afternoon that the congressman from Texas had raised more than $5 million -- twice as much as he raised in the last quarter. Almost every other candidate hit the traditional third-quarter lull in the summer and raised less money. And while Paul's haul is likely less than that of better-known Republicans, such as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who have not yet reported third-quarter numbers, it's roughly what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is estimated to have raised, and five times what former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee brought in. Paul Supporters to Comment on This Dot-Com Story Paul's supporters are often young and raucous and emanate from college campuses. Their presence on the Internet is undeniable. "The organization of the campaign popped up spontaneously on the Internet with these meet-up groups," Paul told ABC News. "It's natural that they would donate the money. So in many ways, the campaign has found me as much as I have found them. It's not a top-down organization. It's sort of bottom up. All we have done at the campaign is provide the message, and the message turns out to be popular." Paul said the crowds are excited about his "message of limited government and following the Constitution." He wants to do away with much of the bureaucracy in the federal government. If it is not spelled out in the Constitution, Paul probably does not support it. Take the Department of Education. President Paul would get rid of it. Same with the IRS. In the House, the former obstetrician votes against so many spending and government bills he's called "Dr. No." But attracting the most interest, political observers say, is Paul's long-standing opposition to the war in Iraq. "Ron Paul says to a lot of people eager to hear this message, 'You can be anti-war and be a conservative,'" said columnist and ABC News consultant George Will today. "In fact, he says, 'If you are a real small government conservative you have to be anti-war.'" Click here for larger video And a growing hub for the Ron Paul Internet buzz is in Austin. "We have the largest meet-up group in the nation," said Paul Davis, who started the Austin online community. The congressman from Lake Jackson is still considered a bottom-tier candidate, but his online supporters have helped him quickly spread his simple message. "No government monitoring, no government regulation, no government taxation," said Paul. And no more involvement in Iraq. The anti-war, pro-free-market message led Davis to start a group that now has nearly 500 members. "This is really growing like crazy," said Davis. Even Paul says he's surprised by the response. "The reception has been many, many fold greater than I have ever dreamed," Paul said. "It just seems to spread through the Internet." On the Internet, Paul has been something of a net-roots phenomenon, topping Paris Hilton and iPhone in Google searches. The cyber-popularity has helped draw fundraising dollars, without Paul having to appear at fundraisers to ask for it. His second quarter cash-on-hand exceeds that of Republican John McCain, who's long been considered a top tier candidate. "That's important, you know. The campaign's growing but we're not spending our money to do this. That's what's amazing," Paul said. But his support is still dismal in most national polls, where he registers at only one or two percent, if he registers at all. People like Davis press on anyway. "The more people find out who he is, and hear his message, it'll take care of itself," Davis said. Hoping a message spread in a virtual world helps translate to real votes. The News On 6's Ashli Sims reports you might be surprised to see whose name is on the sign. Hillary, Obama, Giuliani, McCain, they may be the media darlings, but some of the first political signs to spring up in Tulsa don't belong to any of them. The man who seems to be winning the grassroots race in Green Country so far is Republican long-shot Ron Paul. "Once I did the research I found out that was the guy I could really relate to," Ron Paul supporter Sid Burgess said. Haskell resident Sid Burgess says he didn't even know who Ron Paul was when he watched the Republican debate. But he says he liked what the Texas congressman had to say. "A message of going back to our Constitution, fighting for real freedom in our country, protecting our own country and our own citizens that's a message that we're not hearing enough," said Burgess. "I think he will be able to give that message to our country." Paul voted against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, and he wants to slash taxes and reduce government spending. "I wanted to be involved. The more I got to know him the more I wanted to get involved and help him out in some way," Burgess said. He joined the internet campaign through meetup.com. Burgess says they have more than 50 members who meet up, plant homemade signs and handout flyers. Paul still barely registers in the polls, but a groundswell of web support has helped him build a war-chest that's rivaling John McCain. And his YouTube page views are second only to Barak Obama. "I hope he wins," said Burgess. "I have a lot of faith in his campaign, but more important than the candidate is his message to me." While some of the other candidates have come to Oklahoma for fundraisers and rallies, Ron Paul has not made it here yet. Although he did come to the state when he ran for president in 1988.
