Message from Otterhouse: Save the Concertzender! please look Hello all, a bizarre situation has developed in the Netherlands. Everywhere in the world, classical broadcasters are shutting down, because of dropping listening figures. In the Netherlands however, the Concertzender, who many of you might know because of there splendid internet channels, has to shut down because it has become too popular... Dutch Public radio host's the Concertzender, and working with 150 volunteers and a handful of paid staff members, they operate on a basis of 500.000 euro a year. Cable companies in the Netherlands are now opting to broadcast the concertzender, instead of the non-classical Radio 6 (operating on a budget many times of the CZ!!). Instead of looking for a good solution, the co-ordinator of radio 6 just wants to pull the plug from the Concertzender... To make things even weirder, a message explaining the situation with a call for support had to be removed from the homepage !!! The call was mirrored on an other site, and a small flood of support letters came in, prompting the board of management of the Dutch public radio to postpone their decision. Because the Concertzender has also a large international following, could you please write a mail to: mening@concertzender.nl and write something like: "Please don't pull the plug from the Concertzender"! Tristan Keuris - Music for clarinet, violin and piano (1973) Recently, Dutch minister of education and culture (the Netherlands does not have a separate minister or state secretary of culture anymore) Ronald Plasterk spoke with a mild disregard about sponsoring "High culture" music ensembles. In the new 4 year budget round, the ASKO-Schonberg ensemble loses 66% of their budget, and the Ives Ensemble, de Volharding, and the Maarten Altena ensemble completely loose their budget and probably stop to exist. This in favour of ensembles who have a larger audience and a more "cross-over" (ethno- pop-) repertoire like the Nieuw Ensemble and the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. Last two ensembles do great work, by the way, never mind that... But my worry is a bit that it will become difficult to hear late 20th century "high culture" music on stage, and on cd. Donemus, the Dutch publisher of "high culture" music, stopped producing cd's. Dutch radio 4 shifted to a more popular programming, and only on the Wensday evening there is some room for western music from the late 20th century. Original Donemus LP's like the one here presented (only 500 copies were made) are becoming very difficult to find... I hope minister plasterk finds a way to keep this music on stage, and hope that he can enjoy this wonderful piece by Dutch composer Tristan Keuris (1946-1996) http://www.donemus.nl/componist.php?id=6&lang=EN There are few cd's of his music on the market, like this one: http://www.avro.nl/web/avro_klassiek/klassieke_cds_bestellen/ This "music" for violin, piano and clarinet from 1973 however is not currently available on cd: http://www.chesternovello.com/Default.aspx?TabId=2441&State_2934=1&composerId_2934=826 I hope Ronald plasterk will listen to this piece (between Pink Floyd and Joni Mitchell...) several times, and hear that this is really great music, that should be heard more... Pipo de Clown adele bloemendaal pipo op Bizarra 1971 Een stukje vergeten Pipo geschiedenis... In 1970 kreeg Cor Witschge oneenigheid met de VARA over het beeldrecht van Pipo. Het geschil liep zo hoog op, dat het tot een rechtzaak kwam (gewonnen door de VARA) en, geloof het of niet, Cor Witschge werd aan de kant gezet! In het door Wim Meulendijk (op Ibiza) gescheven Pipo op Bizarra speelde Cees van Ooyen Pipo de Clown. Het werd geen succes, want het publiek wilde "de echte" pipo weer terug, wat in 1978 dan ook gebeurde. De LP van Pipo opizarra laat horen dat Cees geen Cor was, maar bevat wel dit geweldige nummer, dat door Adele Bloemendaal gezonden werd. Ik was 4 toen mijn vader deze lp bij de Makro (?) kocht. Ik snapte natuurlijk niet al die dubbelzinningheden die in dit nummer zaten...
