Procession of Saints Cosma and Damiano Rocking saints! -------------------------------- On the last Sunday of September, the sailors of Sferracavallo honor their patrons, Saints Cosma and Damiano, and this fishing village north of Palermo is awash in a fascinating atmosphere; the streets of the town are decorated with thousands of colored lights that will illuminate the passage of the "vara" (saint's float). In the early afternoon, the "vara" leaves the church on a litter carried on the shoulders of a huge crowd that holds the statues of the two saints. At a pace set by the rhythm of the marching band and the clapping of the public, the carriers begin an intriguing "ballet", in which they perform a sort of dancing run that represents the ill and infirm racing to arrive before its too late. In fact, tradition has it that the saints, being brothers and both physicians, have the power to cure any type of disease. In the evening, a huge fireworks display on the little port's dock puts the finishing touch on this very particular Sicilian tradition. However, in the days preceding the festival, there are traditional races by colorful fishing boats in the Gulf of Sferracavallo, including a swimming race of townspeople across the Gulf.
