I first met her at a health food store when she told me that Alan Steinfeld was the best acupuncturist in the world (he is). Alan regrets that at the end of her life, as she was dying of Ovarian Cancer he was not able to make the trip down to where she was living with her family. I regret that I was not able to gather more tools for a recovery and I post this in deepest respect and love for her boyfriend who survives her, was a great companion in artistic creations and for a recent poster on YouTube who feels the message is that she wasted her time and life by doing alternative therapies. Growing Up in Greece and the Middle East - Healing the Personal and Social Bodies It was once pointed out by an MNN family member to an internet detractor that at a time when his own family was drifting apart Paula had a family that was loving and supportive. I used to be ashamed of my father in several ways. One was that he was not a Jewish professor as I lived in Berkeley California, so initially the social comparison paradigm was not about money. I can see now that he knew more than even smart Jewish professors, parents of my childhood friends. His very experience growing up in the Middle East and seeing what happened around him would fly in the face of what, due to media, was believed by those smart Jewish professors. I can now also look back and feel even more love for my father for determining how to bring his children up in his new country so that they would be successful but I wonder how much that might have to do with, in a way, being a stranger to his own children. I always knew my father loved me and I hope I can take that love to always seek the real story. Not necessarily because he did it, but because as a good father he did his job to protect me by telling me often NOT to do it... but his love and faith in me was always stronger. Through it I knew I COULD do it. The real truth must be directly related to living in a society of the free and brave, healthy, protected by our intellectuals and political leaders and not sold out due to their fear and cowardice. I know that timing is everything. John Gulino, the MNN family member has a father from Sicily, another country that haunts me as one of my husbands, pure Sicilian who spoke hardly any English when I met him learned English faster than I could learn his real story. Perhaps understanding from where we come will help us help MNN Pick Up the Ball for Free Speech especially when it matters most and protect our most valuable cultural creations. Finally I want to also dedicate this to my brother George's niece who wants to be closer to her family.
