New Optigan Disc - RADIOAKTIVOX It's the news you've been waiting for! We are now ready to release the first in a series of new, high quality Optigan discs. We've listened to your feedback and have produced a disc that contains the sounds most requested, and in the style that scored the highest in our survey. We call the disc Radioaktivox. Is in the style of a familiar German synthesizer band from the seventies. We used the much sought after Optigan/Orchestron choir sound for the keys- a sound made famous by said band. We used the original source material from the master tapes and have totally eliminated the clicks and pops at the loop seams. We are now accepting advanced orders for Radioaktivox. You can help us reduce the cost of the discs by placing your advanced order by 12/15/2008. The more orders we receive, the lower the cost. The minimum quantity we can make is 25 pieces for a price $100 a disc. We think that price is too high. If we could get about 100 advanced orders, we believe we can knock off another $10 to $15. Whatever the savings ends up being, we will refund that amount to you at the time we fulfill your order. Please visit http://shoptigan.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3410977 to place your order! Also, you can find out more about this project at http://blogtigan.wordpress.com/ Thanks for your support! We are excited about releasing the first Optigan disc in 34 years, and we hope that there will be many more. Tags: optigan optigon orchestron vox humana choir talentmaker |

1950 GE Play-Talk Turntable Tape Recorder Here's a demo of an odd bit of transistional tech. This is a GE Play-Talk from 1950. It's a kid's toy, but it's actually pretty advanced for the time, since tape recorders were just start to become available. This is a tape recorder / record player hybrid. The paper disc is coated with magnetic tape, and the tonearm has a tape recorder head on it. The little plastic disc that goes over the "tape" disc has a spiral groove for guiding the tonearm. The speaker serves double duty as the microphone. All tube electronics. What's great is the way you can play/record in random access mode. There's no erase head, so the sounds just keep building on top of each other until you erase the disc with a bulk tape eraser. In the 2nd part of the video, I use another fantastic GE toy- the Tote-A-Tune keyboard from the early 70s. I record a scale onto the disc, then attempt to play a tune by manually moving the tonearm over the disc. Lots of creative lo-fi applications for this sucker!! MUCH thanks to Llyswen for getting this thing for me (years ago) and Robert for recently bringing it back to life!! MIDI Optigan & Reaktigan Emulation Software Demo This is a demo of a project that's actually been kicking around for a few years, but is currently on the back-burner. But I figured it at least deserves a demo video. This is an Optigan (actually the first one I ever owned) that's been converted to a MIDI controller (aka the Midigan) for the purpose of controlling Optigan emulation software developed in Reaktor (aka the Reaktigan). Braden Diotte did the Optigan midi mod for me (using guts from an M-audio midi controller keyboard) and Patrick Keller wrote the Reaktor Optigan emulation. Essentially, for live shows, I needed something more reliable and flexible than a real Optigan, but didn't want to give up the unique interface, so that's why this exists. The software is still a work in progress. You can load any sounds you want into it, as demonstrated in the video. Sorry for the audio quality- I tried to sync up a direct recording of the audio with the audio from the video camera, but it didn't really work out, so I just stuck with the audio from the video camera. I could have just re-shot the whole video but I was lazy so there ya go. At some point we plan to make this software available (probably converted to a stand-alone app) as well as basic instructions for making a midi controller out of an Optigan (hopefully a dead one!). Stay tuned... Tags: optigan optigon native instruments reaktor midi |

The First NEW Optigan Disc since 1974! http://blogtigan.wordpress.com/ Over the years, I've had lots of folks propose various schemes for making new Optigan discs using computer software. Finally, someone has come through with a workable system! Robert Becker is the engineering wizard that made this technological advance possible! And what kind of sounds do I give him to make the first test disc with? Crappy-ass cheesy 80s synth pop!! OK, this is just a quickie demo, and actually the sound quality on this video isn't that great but trust me, the disc sounds fantastically lo-fi and sounds just like an Optigan disc except with brand new sounds! We screwed up a few of the chord button assignments, but that's an easy fix. The drum sounds are from an Oberheim DMX. The chord patterns are sounds from Native Instruments Reaktor, sequenced in Cubase. And the scale tones are also from Reaktor. We're working on developing a scheme for making more discs and making them available. All I can say right now is that generating a master is very expensive, and additional copies are also quite expensive. So unfortunately we won't be able to just do whatever the hell we want. But soon I'll post a survey of some sort at optigan.com so y'all can weigh in on what kinds of discs you'd put down some cash for! Oh, and yes- we'll be able to make new Orchestron discs too! (In theory we could make new Talentmaker discs, but the demand for those probably would not justify the expense. If you're interested in purchasing new Optigan discs, please take a moment to fill in our survey so we can figure out what we should make! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=pxR19imAvY0ripwmuwf09w_3d_3d Tags: optigan optigon orchestron talentmaker |

Philip Glass - Two Pages (for Steve Reich), 1968 (NOTE: This is a revised version of a previously posted YouTube video. I've corrected a musical error and also added some reverb. Unfortunately I couldn't simply update the original video and keep all the comments, which is a shame since there were hundreds of good comments/discussions on it. Oh well.) I'm learning to play this early Glass piece so I thought I'd make a video version. No, this is not me playing it, this is a sequence I did with Cubase. And it's playing back at twice the tempo as Glass' original recording from 1975. I primarily sped it up so it would fit within YouTube's 10 minute time limit, but actually now I really like hearing it at this speed. And since I'm not aware of any tempo indication on Glass' original score (and much of his music in the 70s WAS played at tempos approaching this speed), I feel that this is a justifiable choice, though you're free to disagree of course. I definitely couldn't play it live this fast, though. It's hard enough to keep it together at half this speed. In any event, this version is mostly meant to be more of a technical illustration of how such Glass pieces are put together and notated. Hopefully you'll find this useful in aiding your appreciation of this music, which is admittedly an acquired taste for most folks. I highly suggest you seek out the original recording, which is easily available on CD. Or better yet, catch a live performance sometime- you really can't truly appreciate this music unless you hear it performed live, as it was originally intended to be heard. Nobody's Diary - Yazoo Cover - feat. Marie Haddad & Casio MT-400V This is a cover of the Yazoo song "Nobody's Diary." Marie Haddad did the singing, I did the music/production. This was largely an experiment to see what could be done with the cheesy old Casio MT-400V, which was used for all the sounds in the backing track. The video consists of a slow pan across the Casio's control panel. This MT-400V has a nice resonant analog filter, which was used heavily here. Some other effects were used on the Casio sounds, most notably a pitch shifter on the bass, to get it down an octave lower. The Optigan Archives Vol. 1 Sample DVD-R! This video features a series of very simple demos of sounds from the Optigan Archives Vol. 1 Sample DVD-R, compared with their related sounds from the Optigan/Orchestron/Talentmaker sample CD. (Please see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeUeMEhqLA0 for an infomercial for that CD.) This is an exclusive set of loops and keyboard samples culled from the original Optigan/Orchestron studio master reels. While the Optigan itself always sounded very lo-fi due to the limitations of its optical-soundtrack technology, the original master tapes retain their hi-fi sound quality (albeit in mono). The Optigan master reels are a vast archive of early 1970s era musical building blocks, covering a wide range of popular styles from the period. Ultimately, only a small portion of this material ever made it onto production Optigan discs. For this initial collection of samples, I'm focusing on that small portion and related out-takes. Future volumes in this series will comprise entirely unfamiliar material- out-takes which never saw the light of day on any Optigan disc. Among many other things, you'll get the master recordings of the Orchestron Vocal Choir sound that Kraftwerk famously used on their albums from the mid to late 1970s. These samples are higher quality than even Kraftwerk themselves have access to (unless they buy a copy from me, of course)! To find out more information about this DVD-R, and to place an order, please visit http://shoptigan.ecrater.com/ and click "Optigan Soundware." 1972 Moog Sonic Six Analog Synthesizer Demo 1972 Moog Sonic Six. This is a quick demo showing some of its features, definitely not a comprehensive demo. Also I cover the two main problems this unit currently has: 1) There is a problem with the lower portion of the keyboard, where the pitch sort of does a "bump and glide" down to those notes after playing higher notes. It's a bit unpredictable and hard to describe- just watch the video. Not sure what the source of this problem is. 2) The modulation input for the ring mod is currently not working. In the video I demonstrate that the signal input works (Osc B), but the mod input switch does nothing. Again, not sure of the source of this problem. Apart from these issues and a few missing knobs, slider caps and screws, the synth works quite nicely. The oscillators have been calibrated, and once warmed up, they hold their tuning well. All the key contacts seem to be in good shape and the keyboard has a nice, playable feel to it. This unit features the earlier non-Moog filter. The audio was recorded direct. There's also and onboard speaker which works well and sounds nice. Tags: 70s vintage synth minimoog keyboard |

Casio Island! (Casio MT-400v Keyboard Demo) When I was 14, back in the 80s, I got my first electronic keyboard- a Casio MT-100. I made lots of rudimentary dual cassette deck overdub recordings with it, little sketches of tunes that usually were never developed. I lent my MT-100 to Cindy Lee Berryhill years ago and never got it back, but recently I bought a Casio MT-400v at a garage sale. It has all the same sounds/functions as the MT-100, plus a much needed analog filter section! This is a new recording of one of my original Casio tunes called "Casio Island" with my MT-400v. I didn't use the analog filter here, because I never had it on the MT-100 back in the day, and I wanted this version to be as close to the original as possible, just with better recording technology. Recently I used this Casio in a live cover version of Yaz's "Nobody's Diary" with Marie Haddad singing. We just finished making a proper recording of it, again using only the Casio, though I used the computer to cheat alot! You can hear it at http://www.myspace.com/mariehaddad (5th song down). You can hear the original version of Casio Island in all its tape-hissy glory here: http://www.operazero.org/peamisc/mystuff06.mp3 Tags: casio mt-400v cheesy keyboard synthesizer mt400v mt100 |

Chamberlin Rhythmate Tape Loop Drum Machine This is a quick demo of my Chamberlin Rhythmate. This was an early drum machine which played back tape loops. It's a predecessor of the Mellotron. A lever moves the tape head across 14 different tape loops, each of which has 3 tracks on it, for a total of 42 different drum loops. A sub-lever shifts the head across the tape to align it with one of the 3 loops. Sometimes it's hard to avoid crosstalk. Samples of all the loops from this Rhythmate are available as bonus material on my Optigan/Orchestron/Talentmaker sample CD-Rom, which can be ordered here: http://www.optigan.com/shoptigan.html Here's a little infomercial i put together for the cd-rom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeUeMEhqLA0 Tags: chamberlin rhythmate mellotron analog tape replay drum machine sampler vintage |

Vako Orchestron Optical Disc Playback Sampler Here's a demo of all 8 discs that were made for the Vako Orchestron. This keyboard, which is adapted from the Mattel Optigan, was introduced in 1975 by Dave VanKoevering. It was intended to be a competitor to the Mellotron, but it never really took off. Kraftwerk was a very early adopter of this instrument. I've included little examples of some of the well-known parts Kraftwerk used their Orchestron for back in the day. My Orchestron is in fairly average working condition. You'll note that I had a bit of trouble with one of the high F keys. Also, note the substantial level of radio interference, which I've muted during disc changes. Anyone interested in more information about the Orchestron and related instruments can find lots of stuff at my website, www.optigan.com. Also, to purchase a sample CD with all the Orchestron sounds (as well as Optigan and Talentmaker sounds), please visit here: http://www.optigan.com/shoptigan.html Also, check out the new Optigan Archives Vol. 1 sample collection, featuring Orchestron sounds taken straight from the original studio master tapes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPO9uXPFRRQ Sound was recorded direct to a Zoom H2. Electro-Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer Analog Synth i haven't seen any demos of the eh mini synth on youtube, so i thought it high time to put one up here. this thing is kind of like the edp wasp, though not quite as versatile. obviously i'm just noodling around, but this will give you a basic idea of some of the sounds this thing makes. pretty limited, but what it does do, it does quite well. also, you can get an idea of how the velocity sensitivity works on this thing. as a bonus, you can download a very detailed kontakt program of a big bass patch that i made with this synth by going here: http://www.twango.com/media/peahix.public/peahix.10025 for those interested, the controls are: top row sliders l-r: -pitch bend -sub octave -phase rate -sweep start freq -sweep stop freq -sweep rate -master volume bottom row switches: -octave -tune (recessed trim pot) -phase -sens. -2x filt. -q -power btw, the "phase rate" slider acts as a pwm lfo rate when the "phase" switch is in the up position, and acts as a continuously variable pulse waveform when the "phase" switch is in the down position.
