Above 3751 to San Diego - Now Available! Above 3751 to San Diego (DVD Video) On June 1, 2008, AT&SF 3751 made its first trip from Los Angeles to San Diego in 55 years and Pentrex was on the spot with multiple camera crews using the latest in high-tech equipment to bring you the best possible coverage of this exciting event. Using our famous aerial photography as well as trackside and onboard cameras, we were able to capture the train from all angles—and we do mean all! We were able to get some truly incredible shots! The powerful 4-8-4 Northern never looked better as she headed south along the beautiful Southern California coast. The skies were clear and sunny as the 3751 departed Los Angeles at the head of its 10-car train. The Amtrak unit behind the 3751 was placed in reverse mode for the turn-around in San Diego and to provide head end power for the cars. Otherwise, the special was pulled entirely by steam. Our camera crews had the train well covered as it followed the west side of the Los Angeles River, past Amtraks Redondo Yard, and headed east to Fullerton and then to San Juan Capistrano. A photo run-by for passengers took place at the Poinsettia Station where the thirsty Baldwin stopped to be watered and serviced before proceeding to San Diego. Leaving the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the oil-burning 81-year old steamer filled the canyons with a throaty exhaust as it tackled the 2.2 percent grades of Miramar Hill. In a scene reminiscent of the glory days of steam, the 3751 pulled into San Diegos classic Mission Revival style station where fans of all ages were waiting to greet the train. Our special coverage of this historic excursion also includes some rare in-cab footage of the 3751. Theres nothing quite so thrilling as the sights and sounds of big steam on the rails again and Pentrex has captured all that excitement for you in Above 3751 to San Diego! Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Passenger Train - DVD Join Pentrex for an exciting ride on the longest and highest narrow gauge railroad in North America, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This remnant of the once flourishing Rio Grande narrow gauge network runs from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado. The spectacular vistas of the San Juan Mountains and the Upper Rio Chama Valley flank the rails of this serpentine route as it switches back and forth across the two state lines. Mikado steam locomotives built in the mid 1920s power the vintage equipment for these passenger trains. Daily, during summer months, they struggle up the four percent grade to the 10,015-foot summit of Cumbres Pass. Youll ride in the cab and witness the expertise of the engineer and fireman who control these locomotives as they blast upgrade. Numerous run-bys highlight the power and beauty of a C&TS doubleheader at many scenic spots along the 64-mile line. The Ultimate Beaumont Hill At the border of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in Southern California lies one of the most interesting and scenic mountain passes in the Southwest. Some call it Banning Pass or San Gorgonio Pass, but most railfans simply refer to it as Beaumont Hill. Pentrex is pleased to present complete coverage of Beaumont Hill from West Colton to Indio in six hours of pounding, railroading action! Although it peaks at only 2,591 feet above sea level, Beaumont Hill still presents sufficient hardship to rival taller passes. Yet, flanked by Mount San Gorgonio to the north and Mount San Jacinto to the south, it has a beautiful charm all its own. Known now as UP's Yuma Subdivision, the 76-mile line is mostly double-tracked and busier than ever. In addition to Union Pacific, you'll see engines from Ferromex, NS, CSX, BNSF, CEFX, GCFX, plus survivors from C&NW, Rio Grande and SP—and those are just the units we captured on the point! You'll also see the SP, MKT, Mopac and WP Heritage units. Many engine models are represented, ranging from the SD38-2 to the newest SD70ACe and Dash 840C to the mighty GEVO. We even caught a rare GP15-1 in doublestack service! Autos, lumber, and intermodal trains dominate the line. The "Rock Train" and Amtrak's Sunset Limited are well covered and UP's Centennial 6936 is seen pulling many passenger specials. There's much more to see in this unending parade of dazzling color, open throttles, squealing brakes, and serpentine curves! Over five years in the making, across the four seasons, under broiling summer sun and snow on the Pass, through windstorms and sandstorms, from dawn to dusk, this is the Ultimate Beaumont Hill! Across Marias Pass Across Marias Pass (DVD Video) Stretched against the sunning backdrop of Glacier National Park, Burlington Northern's transcontinental mainline climbs up and over the rugged Rocky Mountains. One scenic splendor after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the mountain pass. It's the pre-merger days of the early 1990s and Pentrex is trackside to record the battle of trains and nature. The grandeur of the mountains is almost overwhelming as we explore the line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of Browning. You'll see trains snake their way through the tunnels and along the banks of the wild middle fork of the Flathead River. Train after train rumbles through forests of aspen and larch decked out in glorious fall colors or struggles against winter's storms. After crossing over the high bridges and through the famous snow sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the summit. Marias Pass takes on a different look on the east slope. Wild, desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You'll see trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. The solitude of Spotted Robe is broken as you watch a heavy grain train grind its way up the grade. Burlington Northern and Mother Natures combine to make this stretch of railroad a place to be visited time and time again. No matter how often you've been here before, you won't want to miss this vision of magnificent Marias Pass. Tags: pentrex marias pass burlington northern bnsf railroad mountain train tunnel scenic |

Tribute to Tennessee Pass DVD Tribute to Tennessee Pass (DVD Video) Esteemed for its scenic beauty and respected for the difficulty of its terrain, Tennessee Pass has been a magnet, drawing railfans and photographers to Colorado's mountains for years. When word spread that Union Pacific was closing the pass in 1997, interest climbed to an all-time high. Along with visitors from throughout the world, Pentrex traveled to this revered line to document its final months of operation. Our efforts were rewarded with a high volume of movements and an outstanding mix of trains. The grit of heavy-haul railroading is an awesome sight. Coal trains slug it out on the 3 percent grade leading to the 10,000-foot summit. Colorado's highest snow-capped mountains loom over toiling freights. Squealing flanges echo off canyon walls as trains grind through serpentine curves, and past the raging waters of the Arkansas River. Helper engines are viewed assisting trains over the mountain. Up to nine of UP's newest AC-powered giants are needed to lug tonnage across the pass. It's this type of intense action and spectacular scenery that made the line so idolized. The Stormy Southern Pacific's Lordsburg District Experience long freight trains, semaphore signals, rugged mountain passes and a proliferation of spring wildflowers along Southern Pacific's mainline in Southeastern Arizona. This stretch of track is hailed as one of the most scenic parts of SP's famous Sunset Route between the cities of Tucson, Arizona and Lordsburg, New Mexico. This exciting production was taped while Southern Pacific was in the middle of a major track expansion program. You'll see the line under different phases of construction as fifty miles of new track, several bridges and new signals were being added. Once the construction was done the semaphore signals came down, but we captured these historic artifacts while they were still in use. Big time mainline railroading takes place here and you'll see hot trains and lowly drag freights working hard across four mountain passes. Amtrak's Sunset Limited is observed, as well as many colorful locomotives on lease from other railroads. Soldier Summit Assault SOLDIER SUMMIT ASSAULT At 7,440 feet, the crest of the Wasatch Plateau in Utah is the fifth highest railroad pass on a US transcontinental mainline. It was the highest point for the former Denver & Rio Grande in Utah. Assaulting the steep grades of Soldier Summit takes brute force horsepower. Many trains require both mid-train and rear end helpers. In 2000, when this show was recorded, the diesels of the Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific worked together to muscle trains over the pass. Union Pacific runs here now, but the Utah Railway and BNSF have traffic rights and Amtrak's California Zephyr runs two trains a day. Classic black and orange Rio Grande SD40T-2s are seen in daily use as helpers on UP's coal trains, and on the famous "trash train." During this time, the Utah Railway's fleet of SD40s was joined by six MK5000s and five Australian-built SD50s. UP's E-units and a C&NW Dash 8 also make an appearance. Watch as extra power is cut into the trains at Helper for the push up the hill. The descent sees the line change direction 180 degrees at the Gilluly Loops, before continuing west to Provo. Coal is a major commodity here, and you'll visit UR coal loading facilities. The red rocks of Utah and snow-capped mountains, the famous formations of Castle Gate, the horseshoe curves at Gilluly, and the slide area at Thistle create a spectacular display. This detailed look at UP's Provo Subdivision offers everything to interest and entertain: rare motive power, challenging terrain, a variety of trains, and fantastic scenery! U-Boat Survivors U-Boat Survivors (DVD video) In 1959, General Electric surprised the industry by introducing a new line of roadswitchers called the Universal Series. Known affectionately as "U-Boats," these powerful locomotives are loved for their unusual appearance, their distinctive chugging sounds, and their tendency to spew thick clouds of sooty black smoke into the air. This tribute to the U-Boat presents the entire line in chronological order, beginning with the revolutionary U25B. Key identification features are pointed out and statistical data are shown for each model, much like a spotter's guide on video. Seen in action are: Southern Pacific U25B #3100, Lake Superior & Ishpeming U25C #2501, Blue Mountain & Reading U33B #3303, Nashville & Eastern U36B #5772, and Providence & Worcester U18B #1801. Also featured are U28Bs from the BN, P&LE, and Rock Island on Transkentucky Transportation; U30Bs from CSX on the Georgia Central, and Burlington Northern U30Cs on the LS&I. Additional models include Squaw Creek Coal U33Cs, Conrail U23Cs, Providence & Worcester U23Bs, New Jersey Transit U34CHs, National of Mexico U36Cs, and many, many more. Our camera crews traveled across the country, seeking out and recording surviving U-Boats. The result is a terrific collection of exciting video images found nowhere else. Mullan Pass The Monsters and More! It's one of the roughest, toughest mountain passes, where heavy tonnage trains battle 2.2 percent grades and up to three sets of helpers are needed for the haul. It's a line of repeated horseshoe curves, with two long trestles, and a 3,896-foot long tunnel that crosses the Continental Divide. It's located in the Big Sky country of Montana, where endless vistas of mountains and cloud-filled skies create a scenic backdrop for trains of 100-plus cars. It's a place where two railroads juggle nonstop traffic over 29 miles of partially single-tracked mountain rails. Welcome to Mullan Pass! Burlington Northern and Montana Rail Link shared the line when Video Rails captured the excitement on this legendary Pass in 1990. Starting at Helena Junction, we see BN and MRL trains depart for the steep climb to the summit. Every westbound train needs helpers and MRL's heaviest power is assigned to its helper pool. SD40-2s and SD45s make up the bulk of the power seen here. 15,000-ton coal trains with 45,000 HP grind their way up the 2.2 percent grade, past Iron Ridge, Greenhorn Trestle, and Skyline Trestle to Mullan Tunnel, Blossburg Siding, and Elliston. Huge clouds of diesel exhaust billow out of the tunnel, making it easy to see why it's called the "Black Fog of Blossburg." A special treat is a cab ride across the Pass in the lead helper engine of BN Train 195, a daily mixed freight. Whether you're viewing the line from the crews' perspective, from trackside, or through vast panorama views, railroading on Mullan Pass is an awesome experience you'll want to enjoy again and again! Steep grades and seven months a year of winter weather put a railroad's resources to the test. Yet the need to transport goods over the Sierras produces a nonstop parade of trains over this famous line, and that was especially true in 1988 when Video Rails captured incredible Southern Pacific action over Donner Pass. Starting at the classification yards in Roseville, California, you'll follow Southern Pacific's trains up and over "The Hill." SP's 6-axle SD40s, SD40T-2s, SD45s, and SD45T-2 tackle 138 miles of up to 2.4 percent grades. Up to 11 units are needed for the climb. The standard arrangement for these 10,000-ton trains is 4 by 6, with four engines leading and 6 mid-train helpers, but you'll also see long trains with six units leading, six mid-train helpers, and an end-of-train helper. Cabooses are also seen in use here. At Colfax, you'll see helpers being added to the front and rear of the trains. This is also a stopping point for Amtrak's twice-daily California Zephyr, several of which are seen with private cars trailing. You'll follow these trains to Alta, Blue Canyon, Emigrant Gap, Yuba Gap, Cisco, Norden and the "Big Hole," a 2-mile long tunnel that runs directly under Donner Pass. Special highlights of this show include rare films of the line's construction, footage of the trapped City of San Francisco Train 101 at Yuba Pass in 1952, snow fighting equipment with steam powered rotaries pushed by Cab Forwards and other steam power, and chilling views of 1980s railroading through winter blizzards. The scenery is spectacular and the railroading is as intense as it gets when Southern Pacific tackles Donner Pass! Southern Pacific Film Archives Volume 2 Flangers, Spreaders, & Steam Rotary Snowplows Volume II of the Southern Pacific Film Archives presents rare footage of snowfighting operations on Donner Pass, filmed by SP company photographers in the 1950s. Flangers are the railroad's first line of defense when snow starts to fall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You'll climb aboard to watch the snow fly as the flangers are pulled by steam engines and by SD9 diesels in Black Widow colors. As the snow deepens, Jordan spreaders are called into action. Then the real show begins as giant steam-powered rotary plows are called out to do battle with the deepening drifts. Both cab-forwards and F-units are seen providing the muscle to push the rotaries over the mountains. SP captured truly spectacular footage of these fascinating machines by running a camera train just a few hundred feet ahead of the spinning blades. Freight and passenger trains run through a winter wonderland pulled by cab-forwards and F-units, and you'll see Alco PAs being rescued at Yuba Pass after being snowbound with the City of San Francisco streamliner. It's a collection of vintage film that every railfan will treasure! Tags: Southern pacific pentrex steam locomotive archives snowplows rotary spreaders flangers |

Southern Pacific Film Archives Volume 1 Daylights, Cab Forwards & Early Diesels From the vaults of the Southern Pacific Railroad comes a collection of rare vintage films never before released to the public. Part of the footage shown here was shot in 1941 for a promotional movie called This is My Railroad, but World War II intervened and in 1947 the film was entirely reshot, leaving the original footage unused. You'll see marvelous images of early GS-class steam locomotives on the Coast Daylight and Noon Daylight climbing Santa Susana Pass, speeding along the Pacific Ocean and in San Luis Obispo. Also included is a rare shot of the Sunbeam in Texas. There are many scenes of the awesome SP Cab Forwards pulling freight on the Coast Line and over Tehachapi and Donner Passes. These mighty giants are also seen pulling passenger trains through the Sierra Nevadas. Mikado and Mountain types make appearances as well. A section on early diesels showcases many of SP's first-generation models, including Alco PAs; EMD E6s, E7s, F7s and GP7s; and Fairbanks-Morse Trainmasters in freight service. It's an astonishing collection from the cameras of the SP cinematographers that will thrill every rail enthusiast! Denver & Rio Grande Western Denver & Rio Grande Western The Denver & Rio Grande Western means rugged, spectacular mountain railroading, heavy freight hauling, and terrific action shots. That was especially true in 1986 when this show was originally filmed. At that time, the railroad was still an independent entity and most of its trains were pulled by pure sets of Rio Grande power, many with cabooses. Units from Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific, and Missouri Pacific could also be seen with run-through trains. This was pre-merger time, a great time to tour the D&RGW. Join Pentrex as we cover the entire Denver to Salt Lake City mainline. Savor the thrill of a cab ride up the Front Range to Moffat Tunnel. Travel to Winter Park to see the Ski Train with its heavyweight coaches. Watch Rio Grande, Santa Fe, and Burlington Northern trains share operations on the Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo. Climb the awesome slopes of Tennessee Pass to the 10,000-foot summit; then descend into the Royal Gorge with its sheer rock walls. Filmed throughout the four seasons of the year, this show brings you the beauty of the Rio Grande terrain and all its nonstop action, including the Rio Grande's business cars, Amtrak, and plenty of freights. It's a fantastic trip! Tags: Denver & Rio Grande Western pentrex railroad moffat tunnel ski train denver tennessee pass royal gorge amtrak drgw |

China Steam Spectacular! China Steam Spectacular! Imagine thousands of steam locomotives in everyday use, rolling through lands of stunning beauty. That was steam railroading in China in 2001 when this exciting documentary was filmed. Much of it is hauntingly similar to the American railroads of the 1930s-1950s. All of it is fascinating. Join our tour of six unique sites and see why steam in China may be the greatest railroad show on earth! We begin on legendary Jing Peng Pass with its 40 miles of tunnels, 2% ruling grade, horse shoe curves, and spiral bridges entirely serviced by double-headed 2-10-2 QJ class locomotives. Next we take you to Daban where the entire fleet of 100 QJ's are serviced. Their resemblance to Union Pacific or NYC locomotives, with smoke box deflectors, Boxpok driving wheels, and large smokebox-mounted headlights, is remarkable. In the coal mining region of Tiefa, a fleet of thirty 2-8-2 SY class locomotives pull fast commuter trains with amazing frequency. Our camera catches the action there near a busy double diamond junction. The Dahiuchang Limestone Quarry near Beijing is an enchanting narrow gauge steam line where we'll view endless strings of tiny ore cars pulled by miniature locomotives. At Anshan, we are granted rare access into one of the world's largest steel mills. It operates its own fleet of forty 2-8-2's and the activity level is incredible. Finally, we'll witness the awesome brute strength of three 2-8-2's straining full throttle up the 3-1/2 percent grade to the Chengde steel mill complex. This line has it all: steep curves, rock cuts, narrow tunnels, and terrific rural scenery. Experience the wonder of it all in China Steam Spectacular!
