Cannes 2008 - Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Best Director "To my lonely and beautiful country, which I love passionately..." Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan was named best director for his film "Three Monkeys" (Uc Maymun) at the Cannes Film Festival. Sean Penn, who headed the nine-member Cannes jury, announced Ceylan's triumph while Faye Dunaway awarded the prize in Cannes, France, on May 25, 2008. After thanking the jury and admitting that this award took him by complete surprise, Ceylan dedicated the prize to his "lonely and beautiful country, which he loves passionately." The French film "The Class," (Entre les Murs) a frank tale about classroom life using real students and teachers at a junior high school, won the Palme d'Or. Benicio Del Toro won the best-actor prize for "Che," Steven Soderbergh's four-hour-plus epic about Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara. Brazilian actress Sandra Corveloni was chosen best actress for her role in "Linha de Passe." The Cannes jury awarded special prizes to Clint Eastwood, who directed the competition film "Changeling," and Catherine Deneuve, who appeared in two films at Cannes this year.
