The L.H.E.S go to hell & back (if you go down to the woods) Against all the odds The Leeds Historical Expedition Society made history as they managed to enter the East portal of Gildersome tunnel to begin there epic 1 mile journey underground in the badly flooded tunnel. Knee deep in thick orange mud we used our tripods to test the ground before we ventured into the darkness. We can only describe this place as hell on earth, We hope you will enjoy the trip should you choose to accept it. to see these detailed explore in words and pictures see here http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=265602590&blogID=326762127 Tags: Leeds Gildersome disused railway tunnel urbex urban exploration |

The York road library revisited (mutiny on the Landings) We payed a visit to the old York road library built in 1904 now closed for over 20 years to capture whats left of this beautifull building. The place has been systematically trashed but we.ve added archive pics as a comparison of how it looked in all it's glory! All credit to Sam & Oldboys for restoring the mosaic floor & Leeds coat of arms. The phoenix has risen (Central viaduct explored) We set out to explore the mysterious central viaduct in the city center that has once again risen up from the ashes now that Monkbridge has been knocked down. Central viaduct has hid behind Monkbridge works for a 100yrs. Make the most of this oppurtunity to view it as new developements in the area will once again hide this magnificent structure forever. Built in 1844 by the G.N.R & closed on the 1st of May 1967 when all trains were diverted in to the 'new' City station. The viaduct is totally severed at both ends. The surviving structure has 15 arches with 2 gracefull overbridges adorned by ornate ballustrades that cross the river Aire & Leeds-Liverpool canal. The viaducts total length is 332yds long. The conquest of Holbeck viaduct Part 3 of the Leeds Historical Expedition Society's quest to take cameras were no other camera has been before. Here we take you on a birds eye view of the abandoned Holbeck railway viaduct in south Leeds. Carefull planning, reconascence & skilled tactics were employed for this daring raid on the monster viaduct. Built by the L.N.W.R in 1869 the viaduct is 1500 yds long and has 85 arches, 9 overbridges & underpasses. Built out of black engineering brick it is both visually impressive & a monumental testament to the victorian railway builders of the day. Thankfully it escaped the unwanted attention of the Luftwaffe on more than one occasion with there deadly load hitting elsewhere. Here we discover some of the viaducts secret places & take a look at the seedier side of the Holbeck area now frequented by prostitutes when darkness descends. The viaduct was considered surplus to requirements in 1988 with no trains passing over it since as can be seen from the amount of vegetation growing on top. Hope you enjoy the trip. The Queensbury tunnel explore The Leeds Historical Expedition Society explored the mile & half long abandoned Queensbury railway tunnel to the West of Bradford. At 400' below the village this is the deepest & longest disused tunnel in England. A real monster! The last passenger trains ran through here in 1955 with all frieght finished the track was lifted in the early 1960's. We could only traverse 1.1 mile into the tunnel as the amount of water pouring in the tunnel buids up & gets deeper as the tunnel is on a fall of 1 in 100, As we stand at the waters edge the water level rises untill it touches the roof & covers the whole portal half a mile away at the Halifax end in Strines cutting. The tunnel took 4yrs to build. Blasted out of sheer rock it's a n incredible testament to the victorian engineers & builders. Suprisingly there was only one man killed during it's construction. We've added long exposure camera shots as the tunnel is incedibly hard to light up for video work due to it's so cavernous size. It's all held together with the classic Get Carter sound track from Jacks train ride journey home to Newcastle on his deadly mission. Enjoy the trip.
