Mobile Phones as Musical Instruments The latest AU project from a team of young innovators in Japan and elsewhere (including Marianne Bailey) presents us with some of the most innovative and original cell phones ever seen. Not only do they provide the usual communication functions but all the featured devices double a musical instruments! Japan already produces a wide variety of niche mobile devices but these machines push those boundaries even further. The example above is named the My Pocket and comes with a number of accessories enabling it to mimic several instruments including harmonica and the trumpet. Other cellphone/instrument combos include Strings for fingers, Sticks in the air, Box to play, Key to touch, Trio in your hand and Band in my pocket. European law enforcement officials stunned by the discovery of these deadly decoys say phone guns are changing the rules of engagement in Europe. "We find it very, very alarming," says Wolfgang Dicke of the German Police union. "It means police will have to draw their weapons whenever a person being checked reaches for their mobile phone." The guns, which are capable of firing four rounds in quick succession, are believed to have been manufactured in Yugoslavia or Croatia. The "antennae" of the gutted phones function as gun barrels and numbers 5 through 8 on the keypad as triggers. Security experts say the cell phone guns, as well as other "improvised explosive devices," can be detected by screening equipment now in use at airports internationally. Hands-on demo of Samsung's i900 'Omnia' iPhone style handset Hands on demo of Samsung's i900 'Omnia' Haptics Interface. Samsung's i900, which bares more than a passing resemblance to the Apple device, will be geared towards internet browsing, with a wide 3.2 inch touch screen supported by haptic technology and Windows Mobile's 6.1 operating system. As well as GPS and HSDPA download capability, the Samsung device will also have a five megapixel camera. According to reports, the Omnia -- which means 'everything' in Latin -- will be officially unveiled at the CommunicAsia trade fair in Singapore next week. C905 Cyber Shot: Sony Ericsson 8.1 megapixel camera phone The manufacturer has stepped up the battle of the camera phones, with the unveiling of its latest Cyber-shot handset, the 8.1-megapixel C905. The C905 is Sony Ericsson's first slider Cyber-shot, and comes with face detection, auto-focus, smart contrast and image stabiliser, and GPS for geo-tagging of photos and navigation. The device also features a 2.4-inch scratch resistant mineral glass display, and comes with a 2GB memory stick. The C905 is available in three colours: night black, ice silver, and copper gold, and will be available in 'selected markets' in the last quarter of the year. The manufacturer has also released details of its first HSPA USB mobile broadband dongles, the MD400 and MD400g. As well as mobile broadband, the devices combine an M2 Memory Stick Micro and a microSD slot, and the MD400g has an in-built GPS receiver which automatically shows the user's location and links directly to Google Maps. Two new entry-level bar handsets were also unveiled today.
