Learn Without Fear Cartoon Club Around 50% of children in India have been bullied, beaten or ridiculed while at school. Corporal punishment is so prevalent that many children do not see it as being wrong. Plan is working with children's clubs to help them understand the implications of using corporal punishment. By creating cartoons the children are able to communicate with each other and with adults their feelings about violence in schools. Flood Children of Holdibari Bangladesh is one of the most susceptible countries in the world to climate change. The rising sea levels are contributing to river and coastal erosion while higher atmospheric temperature and intense storms are causing widespread floods. One island that is severely affected by flooding is East Holdibari in North West Bangladesh. However, Holdibari's children are fighting back, and have created an action plan to prepare for future floods. Tanzania Flood Relief In April 2008, heavy rainfall in Tanzania's Morogoro region led to fast-flowing floods across the area, with around 600 people driven from their homes in Ifakara. Doto's house was destroyed in the floods and she and her family were relocated by Plan Tanzania to a local school and provided with blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, cooking oil and school supplies. Emergency in El Salvador During the night of 3rd July 2008, torrential rain caused the Huiza River to burst its banks. The water rose to almost two meters and destroyed houses, crops and everything else along riverbanks in the Canton Melara and Santa Cruz communities in the La Libertad region of El Salvador. Children on the Frontline: Philippines The village of Santa Paz in Southern Leyte, Philippines is prone to floods and landslides. The school is situated in a particularly dangerous area and could be swept away by a landslide following a tropical storm. Plan's Disaster Risk Reduction programme assessed the school and initially built a trench and concrete barrier to protect it. However, the schools situation makes it vulnerable and only by moving it to a different location can the children be properly protected. Poto-Poto In 2007, Plan and AURA (United Artists for African Rap) produced the rap opera Poto-Poto. The song tells the story of children from different backgrounds in West Africa including child soldiers, child prostitutes and domestic workers. Children on the Frontline: Sierra Leone 2 The decade-long civil war of the 1990s in Sierra Leone created an estimated 2.1 million refugees. At least half were children, most of whom suffered appallingly high levels of atrocity and cruelty resulting in a generation with mental health trauma. Plan organises school workshops with Respect Rappers, a collective of around 30 performers, many of them ex-combatants. The rappers teach children about their rights and try to inspire them to finish their studies.
