AgriProcessors Deceives Consumers When Dr. Grandin inspected the facility in 2006, the plant showed her slaughters that did not include a second cut at all, and she gave them her approval. Just two weeks prior to PETA's August 2008 undercover investigation, AgriProcessors gave a private tour to selected rabbis, community leaders, and reporters, and video footage from that tour shows slaughter done without a second cut at all. Clearly, AgriProcessors wanted consumers to believe that the plant was operating in a manner that would meet the high standards expected, but PETA's investigation revealed that things happen differently behind closed doors. In light of this new video exposing the gouging second cuts—and AgriProcessors' quite different conduct during the tour—Dr. Grandin has made a new assessment of AgriProcessors, stating, "The undercover video clearly showed that when they think nobody is looking, they do bad things in this plant." Demand that the USDA require that AgriProcessors install video cameras on the kill floor as part of a live video-monitoring system that would be audited by a third party. A number of plants already use this important technology, which is recommended by Dr. Grandin, and it ensures that proper procedures and laws are followed at all times. Ringling Brothers Circus Cruelty Continues In 2006, PETA openly monitored Ringling's traveling units. The footage shows some of the cruelty that we documented, including the fact that elephants with stiff joints and chronic lameness were kept more...on the road and aggressive use of the bullhook. One scene depicts a Ringling trainer inflicting a bloody bullhook wound behind the left ear of an elephant. The elephant responds with a series of squeals. Pizza Surveillance Feature Based loosely on an internet joke, Phil Gutis, Director of Legislative Communications at the American Civil Liberties Union developed a script about privacy in the future. The ACLU is very concerned about personal privacy and felt a Flash feature would provide an excellent vehicle for spreading its concerns. (Hate) Machine From Director Phil Caron: The concept for (Hate) Machine came out of the distortions/biases that I saw in post-911 media. Of course these distortions had always been there, but suddenly they became very blatant, and most media presented their material with a pro-war stance. As a Canadian who is regularly exposed to American, British and Canadian news, it was shocking to see such differences in storytelling, and to see how the same raw material could be twisted and personalized. Help End the Slaughter of America's Horses The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is a bill designed to prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption. On June 8, 2005, the U.S. House passed an amendment to the House Agriculture Appropriations bill that defunded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's horse slaughter-related activities. The U.S. Senate approved an identical amendment on September 20. Together, these amendments (which were approved by Congresss as part of the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill) were intended to stop horse slaughter during 2006.
