John Whitney - Arabesque (1975) early computer graphics John Whitney is considered by many to be the "Father of Computer Graphics". He started in the 1940s building clockwork mechanisms with lights to draw directly on film. Later, he bought WW2 surplus analog ballistics computers and eventually started using digital computers. I believe this one was rendered using a vector display. Incidentally, his son John Whitney, Jr. owned the company that did graphics for "The Last Starfighter". How the internet saved Russia from the hardliners This is a clip from a 1995 program called "The Internet Show". Most of it is pretty painful to watch now, but this bit is fascinating. In 1991, a bunch of old party hardliners staged a coup while Gorbachev was on vacation. They shut down the newspapers, TV, radio, telephone system and telegraph. But they didn't know about the Internet and Relcom's 56k dedicated line to Finland. Yeltsen could communicate to the West and had more information than the hardliners. Eye In The Village - No One Turns Away From The Camera UPDATE!: As promised, the director has uploaded a GREAT looking version, with excellent sound quality and perfect video. Watch that version instead. It is now linked as a Video Response. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLz5iPdDWzg It is also available in high resolution, if you append &fmt=18 to the URL, you can see it in 640 x 480. This is something from my collection that, as far as I know, was only played once on the show "Night Tracks". It's a bit of fairly average 80s synth-pop, but the animation is great! It's filled with all these little text messages from the animators, including credits. Tags: 80s synth pop animation animated music video |

Bulgarian choral singing - Trio Bulgarka + 3 others This is a short clip I got from a friend, not sure where it came from. If someone knows, please post and I'll include the information. I recognize the three women from the Trio Bulgarka - Stoyanka Boneva, Yanka Rupkina and Eva Georgieva. I don't know the other three, or the flautist. Sorry I have so little information, but there is so little Bulgarian music on YouTube that I had to add this. Sting - Spread A Little Happiness This song was featured over the closing credits of the movie "Brimstone and Treacle". If you've seen the film, the irony of this song is devastating. 2020 report on music video from 1980 - part 2 of 2 This is part 2 of 2. Back in 1980, the record industry was in turmoil - a place they seem to find themselves in on a regular basis. Featuring interviews with various record label executives on weather or not this new thing called "music video" would save the record business. This pre-dated eMpTyVee, which didn't launch until August 1st, 1981. Featuring clips from various artists including: Kate Bush Lene Lovich Todd Rundgren The Rolling Stones Michael Nesmith Rickie Lee Jones Tom Petty Fleetwood Mac The Buggles Meatloaf Bruce Springsteen It's amusing (although unintentionally so), and the hosts of the program really don't seem to grasp the relationship of music and video. And people under 20 might find those giant DVDs somewhat disturbing. Tags: music video history 1980 unintentionally humorous |
