Lightning hits 17 yard away - www.prairiestorm-wx.com Visit www.prairiestorm-wx.com August 22 2002 - Lightning hits a tree 17 yards away from where I was standing. This was actually MEASURED the next day... not just another BS youtube video claiming lightning hitting 10 feet away when in reality the bolt is a mile off. We felt the heat/shockwave from the bolt and wound up laying on the ground for about 10 seconds, very disoriented as more bolts hit very near our location. This was film in Urbana, Illinois. Close Lightning Strike Lightning strikes very close to us on a storm chase in western Illinois. Unfortunately I moved the camera seconds before and the actual bolt is not seen on screen. The snap/click heard before the thunder is the electrical current of the bolt, similar to the sound you hear when your finger is shocked while touching something.
