Gore Vidal : There Never Has Been Democracy in the United States Afshin Rattansi speaks to Gore Vidal about Obama's speech in Denver. Vidal: US never had democracy Fri, 29 Aug 2008 02:23:21 GMT American essayist Gore Vidal says that despite the US claim that it is making the world safer by perpetuating democracy, the country never had any democracy. In an exclusive interview with Press Tv correspondent, Vidal said that the United States has never had democracy and the word never was used in the US constitution, Bill of Rights or the Declaration of Independence. Vidal also said that America has fallen into the hands of a small group of people that only care about global dominance and making money from US tax payers by waging wars. The renowned essayist made the analogy that the democratic national convention in Denver is symbolic of a falling empire and observed that the hyper expensive entertainment-based campaigns and the current state of the US as being overextended in multiple wars and no budget surplus to finance them, all bode ill for that nation's future. Vidal noted that despite Obama's promise to deliver universal heath care, the heath industry would oppose his plan and insure he will not be able to deliver on his stated goal. When asked about US policy toward Iran by the rival candidates, Vidal responded that McCain is a warmonger that will likely wage war on Iran. Tags: obama gore vidal chomsky nazi mccain denver dnc |

Tony Blair's Sister-in-Law on Arrest of a Gaza Activist Afshin Rattansi talks to Lauren Booth, broadcaster and journalist after the arrest of Professor Jeff Halper. Minnesota-born Halper, an Anthropology lecturer from Ben Gurion University who also chairs the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, was among dozens of international activists who sailed from Cyprus over the weekend in an attempt to break an Israeli naval blockade of the coastal enclave. Halper was arrested after he passed through the Erez crossing back into Israel, since he had violated a military order prohibiting Jewish civilians from entering Gaza that was legislated pursuant to the Disengagement in 2005. Police originally thought to release Halper conditionally following preliminary questioning, but apparently decided to keep him in lock-up overnight. World Bank Coup in Thailand Sunai Phasuk, Human Rights Watch in Thailand talks about the attempted coup d'etat. Court issues arrest warrants for Thai protest leaders Last Updated: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 | 6:27 AM ET Comments0Recommend0 CBC News A Thai court issued arrest warrants on Wednesday for nine leaders of massive anti-government demonstrations that have gripped the country's capital and featured protesters camping out inside the prime minister's compound. The charges against the leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy, which organized this week's demonstrations, include inciting unrest and attempting to overthrow the government, the BBC reported. The arrest notices came as nearly 2,000 Thai police faced off against thousands of demonstrators demanding the prime minister's resignation at his office compound Wednesday. Protesters have camped in a huge garden outside the Government House offices since scaling fences there Tuesday afternoon. About 500 helmeted riot police forced their way into the compound overnight, briefly clashing with protesters. Police later backed off from the confrontation, establishing themselves inside the compound and mingling with protesters. Tags: thai coup |

Afshin Rattansi talks to Frontline Club Founder about Amanda Lindhout Kidnapping Context Afshin Rattansi talks to Vaughan Smith, the founder of the Frontline Club after the abduction of former Press TV correspondent, Amanda Lindhout. TORONTO STAR 27-year-old Albertan kidnapped in Somalia described as having passion to help needy Deena Kamel Staff Reporter Long before Amanda Lindhout began reporting in war zones, the Canadian freelance journalist kidnapped Saturday in Somalia was a waitress in a Calgary bar with her eye on the big picture: She dreamed of becoming a photojournalist. Paul MacPherson first met Lindhout in that bar seven years ago where their friendship began. "She is very charismatic, very strong-willed," he says of Lindhout by email. "But open-minded at the same time." Lindhout, a 27-year-old freelance print and TV reporter normally based in Baghdad, was abducted along with Australian reporter Nigel Brennan, a few kilometres outside the Somali capital, Mogadishu, along with their Somali driver and two guards. Journalists and humanitarian workers are frequently abducted for ransom in Somalia, one of the world's poorest and most violence-racked countries. Saturday's abduction came during a period of especially heavy fighting, including the capture of Kismayo, Somalia's third-largest city, by Islamic insurgents. MacPherson called Lindhout "a real humanitarian." "She has a passion for helping the underprivileged of the world and trying to get their story out," he said. The Frontline Club opened its doors in late 2003, soon after the Frontline News TV agency closed down. Frontline News TV was created by a group of freelance cameramen during the Romanian revolution. It went on to become a well-known player in the independent fringe of television newsgathering. The Club was founded by the surviving members of the original team of cameramen, and dedicated to the memory of friends and colleagues who lost their lives gathering news and images from the world's conflict zones.
