The Delta Fiasco - "Paperhouse" Music video I directed for Liverpool's own The Delta FIasco. (NOTE: YouTube compression desecrates this video, if you'd like to see a high quality version go to my website: www.RyanRickett.com) I shot the band in London on a green screen and brought the footage back to LA to composite into the miniature sets built by hand by Andrew Ralston, myself, and our friend Ryan Rogers. After the sets were finally built Andrew and I spent about two months shooting plates and compositing the band's performance into them. We also did two more green screen shoots here in LA to get more inserts of characters and props. The Academy Is... "Classifieds" Music video I directed for the song Classifieds, for The Academy Is... I can't remember the exact budget for this video but it was, as is apparent, very low. I think this was the third or fourth music video I ever made. The video takes place inside of a Playmobil doll house. I did all the compositing myself with longtime collaborator Andrew Ralston. This was the first time Andrew and I ever considered the possibility of compositing with miniatures, and we literally taught ourselves the process as we went along. This was a difficult video to make, at the time, but the learning experience was invaluable. (Check out my new video for The Delta Fiasco to see what a proper compositing job with miniatures looks like.) For some reason the band never released this video, I was never told why. I guess they didn't like it, or the label didn't like it. I've always felt really bad about that. There are a lot of things wrong with it, but considering all the work was done by two guys on a shoestring budget it's not THAT bad! Limbeck - "People Don't Change" Music video I directed for the band Limbeck, shot on super 16mm film. This video was an uphill battle from start to finish. For one, it was a windy day and we were going to build all these faux sets all over the yard with different themes but the backdrops kept blowing away (the one of the beach blew into the pool, you can see the wrinkles from that, haha), and we couldn't keep them down because we didn't have enough people on the crew. So I had to improvise by re-writing the treatment during shooting. In the original concept he wanders away from the party and into all these purposefully-cheesy sets in the backyard before making his way back to the party. We kind of did that, but ultimately it just seems pretty random and, well, like a backyard summer party. It's always upsetting when something doesn't turn out how you expected, but that's low-budget filmmaking so you have to deal. It's a fun video anyway, and the song is super catchy. Oh also, these guys were super great to work with! They're a fantastic bunch of kids and the whole experience of doing a video for them was excellent. VHS or Beta - "You Got Me" Music video I directed for the band VHS or Beta. Shot on super 16mm film. VHS or Beta are an awesome band, and really amazing guys. It was an honor to do this video. The budget was extremely low and we bit off a bit more than we could chew shooting on film for two days, but we did a pretty good job under the circumstances. I learned more fighting to get this video done than most other jobs of my career. The POV cam was a helmet with a mounted 16mm camera on one side, a neck brace, and required two people to operate so the person wearing it won't have a neck injury. It's pretty ridiculous. I love putting my friends in videos. In this one you will see Annie Hardy from Giant Drag, Alex Ebert from Ima Robot, the hands of music producer Chris Holmes, and half a dozen other close friends making cameos. Midnight Movies - "Mirage" Music video I directed for the amazing Midnight Movies. Yet another collaboration with the one and only Andrew Ralston. The original concept for this video was thrown out the window a week after shooting the band on a green screen. I was going to build a haunted forest at night and put the band in it. Once we got started on the design the band came forward and said that they actually wanted something different- something similar to the art on their [first] album. FORMS After I made this movie I realized that I completely maxed out my love for Final Cut Pro (3.0 at the time) and longed for more. The next project I did was the spec video for Layton (in my videos if you're interested) that I spent four months putting together in After Effects (5.0), starting from chapter 1 of the Adobe: Classroom in a Book series. Starring the great photographer herself, Melanie Pullen, and, of course, Andrew Ralston, who probably appears on TV as many times as he does in my stupid films. The Lot Six - "X-Rayted" (Music Video) Music video for the Boston band The Lot Six. This was another early collaboration with the wonderfully-strange and ever-inspiring Andrew Ralston. This was my second paying gig as a director, but if you calculate the amount of time I spent working on the project with the amount of money I made it comes out to a few cents an hour (the total budget was something like $4000 and Andrew and I spent about three months building this video from scratch in After Effects). They let me pick the song to do a video for too, which is rare, and I found out later I picked their least favorite song. Whoops! Earlimart - Burning the Cow (music video) This was my first paying gig ever as a director. I didn't make any money though, since the budget was only $2500 and I spent it entirely on camera rentals (look closely- there are about 20 miniDV cameras rolling). It was worth it though because I'm a big Earlimart fan. Also, this was before I learned After Effects, so I put the whole thing together in Final Cut Pro which took ages! Layton - "Roundagon" (music video) Music video I made with longtime collaborator Andrew Ralston for our buddy Paul Layton. Before I made this video I had never touched After Effects. Andrew and I went out and bought the Adobe Classroom in a Book and taught ourselves the program as we went along. Looking back it's pretty generic but it was good enough to get me signed so it was worth the four months it took to put together! Also, for you fledgling filmmakers out there, all I did was hang green fabric in my living room and shoot the band with an XL1 miniDV camcorder (man if only consumer HDV existed three years ago!).
