Cappella - Turn It Up And Down (Mars Plastic Edit) Cappella Real Name: Pieradis Rossini, Gianfranco Bortolotti, Mario Mori & Diego Leoni Profile: An Italo-house production team employing up to ten different studios, at least a trio of producers for every production and scores of session workers, Cappella is mostly the creation of producer Gianfranco Bortolotti. Undoubtedly influenced by Motown's assembly-line aesthetic (as well as the '80s British dance team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman), Bortolotti coordinated the work of longtime producers DJ ProfXor, RAF and DJ Pierre (not the Chicago producer) to create dozens of European club/chart hits under the aliases Cappella, 49ers, Fargetta, RAF, Clubhouse and East Side Beat. For good or ill, Bortolotti's productions were most responsible for the Italian house phenomenon of the late '80s and early '90s, based on an often-maligned push-button production blueprint which includes only the cheesiest of melodies, samples, piano lines and diva vocals. Each single produced by Bortolotti's Media Productions underwent rigorous testing and remixing for maximum airplay in each country it's released, with only Bortolotti holding the final say on what appears. Throughout the 1990s, Cappella was one of the most thoroughly unartistic dance acts - and for the most part, proud of it. Inspired by the productions of Italo-disco producer and mixer DJ Pierre, Gianfranco Bortolotti began mixing around Italy while at school in the late '70s. The Cappella Project had already debuted as a production team by the end of the decade, though Bortolotti did little more than mix in the music industry until the mid-'80s. In 1987, he produced Cappella's "Bauhaus (Push the Beat)", a club hit throughout Europe and the UK. The following year brought the contintent-wide Top 10 hit "Heylom Halib", which presaged a wave of similar-sounding Italian house tracks during 1989-90. Bortolotti recorded a Cappella album (the cash-in heavy Heylom Halib), and scored again with the singles "Be Master in One's Own House" and "House of Energy Revenge". To his credit, he did recruit seminal diva Loleatta Holloway for the single "Take Me Away", less successful than the chart-entries but much better. After several additional 1992-93 hits (Including "U Got 2 Know", based around a sample from Ralphi Rosario's seminal "You Used to Hold Me" featuring the vocals of Xavier Gold)), Bortolotti decided to make an act of Cappella with the addition of two Brits - Rodney Bishop (formerly with Positive Gang) and Kelly Overett (a vocalist who had worked with SL2). The singles "U Got 2 Let the Music" and "Move on Baby" became Cappella's biggest hits, hitting number one in several countries during 1994. The album U Got 2 Know did appreciably well, though Overett left by 1995 (to be replaced by Allison Jordan). Soon however, Cappella appeared to be running on steam. The 1995-96 singles like "Tell Me the Way" and "I Need Your Love" barely made the European charts, and their 1996 album War in Heaven fared poorly (though it was released in America). 2 Unlimited - Spread Your Love 2 Unlimited Real Name: Jean-Paul De Coster, Phil Wilde, Raymond Lothar Slijngaard, Anita Dels, Romy Snoeijers Van Ooijen, Marion Van Iwaarden Profile: Popular Eurodance duo founded by Belgian producers Jean-Paul de Coster and Phil Wilde. First released as an instrumental in spring 1991, "Get Ready For This" received an immediate success (#2 in the UK charts). Conscious of their popularity, Wilde & De Coster wanted a more accessible, formatted formula for their project to grow. Raymond Lothar Slijngaard was then contacted to write lyrics and add a rap to the track. On his suggestion, Anita Dels (a singer from the Amsterdam club scene) joined in as the female vocalist. The new re-version of "Get Ready For This" was released in september 1991 and helped to perpetuate the success of 2 Unlimited around the world. The following single, "Twilight Zone", did even better in the charts and became a well known club anthem. A full album announced two more succesful tracks: "Workaholic" and "The Magic Friend". Their second opus, "No Limits!", was released in 1993. It's popularity was such that no more than five singles were taken out of it. Among them, "No Limit" and "Tribal Dance", now considered as Eurodance classics. The decline of 2 Unlimited started as soon as their typical sound was reproduced by other Eurodance acts. By the time of "Real Things" (1994), their distinctive flavour was shared with hundreds of marketed clones. In 1996, a complicated relationship between Ray and Anita precipitate the breaking of 2 Unlimited. For a moment, a background vocalist was due to replace Anita beside Ray, but ultimately, she refused the contract offered to her. A relaunch attempt (2 Unlimited 2) featuring two female singers (Romy (2) and Marion Van Iwaarden) was tested, but only had a mitigated success. Both singers left once their contracts ended in 1998. Recent petitions asking for the return of 2 Unlimited were ignored as Ray and Anita do not wish to work together again. Click on "More Images" to see the performers through time... Reel 2 Real - Can You Feel It Reel 2 Real Real Name: Erick Morillo & Ralphie Muniz Profile: Reel 2 Real began as a House project of Erick Morillo and Ralphie "Boy" Muniz. Their first release under that name was "The New Anthem" (1992), released on the Strictly Rhythm label, which quickly became an underground hit. The following single, "Go On Move" (1993), featured the voice of rapper Mark Quashie, also known as Mad Stuntman, The. The strong reggae/dub influences of the record officially became their trademark. In 1994, "I Like To Move It" was released to a enthusiast crowd and became one of the most important dance hits of the 90's. The following singles "Can You Feel It?", "Raise Your Hands" (previously released as "Azuca" under the name R.A.W.), "Conway", and new commercial remixes of "Go On Move" confirmed the success of Reel 2 Real in the US and in Europe. Ralphie "Boy" Muniz left the act right after the success of the 1994 album "Move It!". A second opus was released in 1996 with Mad Stuntman, The as a full member of Reel 2 Real (the releases of that period no more credit him as a featured artist). The first single "Are You Ready For Some More?" was very Eurodance oriented. "Jazz It Up", first released as an instrumental by the Erick Morillo Project, featured the collaboration of Barbara Tucker and Charlotte Small while "Move Your Body (Mueve La Cadera)" featured the team of Proyecto Uno. The Reel 2 Real alias was abandoned the same year, after which Morillo spent a few years establishing himself as an underground DJ.
