Modern Orient Express 1: Beograd - Istanbul, Nov 3-4 2008 By sleeping car on the route Vienna - Beograd - Nis - Sofia - Istanbul. Crossing the Danube in Serbia at Novi Sad and Sava at Beograd in the morning, shunting at Belgrade station, ride with D 491 "Balkan Express" to Nis behind electric, then change to 661-152 GM diesel and going to the Bulgarian border through the spectacular Nisava gorge. From Dimitrovgrad, the Serbian border town, to Sofia again with electric where the BDZ sleeping car was changed. Across the Bulgarian - Turkish border in the night pulled by BDZ Ludmilla diesel, Halkali - Istanbul Sirkeci suburban train section in the morning. Triple 2143 Diesel through Waldviertel, October 16 2008 Class 2143 triple and double header freight on the Schwarzenau - Zwettl - Waldhausen - Martinsberg-Gutenbrunn line. Up to Zwettl there is passenger traffic and a third loco is conveyed with the train, further into the lonely Waldviertel landscape it's freight only and served by a double header. Early Fall Steam across Semmering, September 30 2008 Several steam runs with Brenner&Brenner 33.132 on the world heritage Semmering Pass line for a film team at Schlöglmühl and Eichberg with some regular freight and passenger traffic inbetween. Fall comes early this year, there is already nice coloring of leaves by the end of September. The last scenes date from September 28 taken in Retz north of Vienna featuring a grape harvest special pulled by nostalgic electric 1040.01, which hasn't been near Vienna for years, and diesel 2143.35. Summer Specials in Eastern Austria, July & August 2008 Steam, diesel and electric specials, some with rarely used (combinations of) locos. One scene from May with 629.01 pulling the weekend "ErlebnisWeltBahn" special to Ernstbrunn near Vienna, strange-looking DT 1.07 (3071.07) with the same special at a nearby location in August, some regular traffic in Marchfeld at sunrise, old railbus 5042.14 on the freight only branch line Vienna Liesing - Waldmühle, 1044.40 in nostalgic livery pulling a EuroCity to Croatia and 4061.13 with special at Vienna Atzgersdorf, 2050.04 GM-Henschel Diesel at Wiener Neustadt and 2050.04 & .02 double header at Vienna Hernals, Absdorf-Hippersdorf and in a race with modern 2016 diesel at Vienna Speising where also some scenes with regular traffic ("Greece"-Taurus, DB 151, 185) were taken. Finally a great steam special with 93.1420 & .1421 celebrating the 120 year anniversary of the Mühlkreis line Linz - Aigen-Schlägl with several scenes including one of the steepest standard gauge sections in Austria (which surprisingly isn't located in the Alps ;-)) and as conclusion the combined road-rail bridge across the River Danube in Linz only used for transferring trains (the same line also crosses the tram tracks shortly before reaching the bridge). Wolsztyn Steam Parade, May 2-3 2008 Steam specials around the parade at Wolsztyn with 16 participating locos including guests from Chabowka, Britain, Hungary and Germany. Also including one private freight with class 232 diesel. At least there was one regular steam passenger on Friday, other than that it was an interesting experience, but I think I prefer Wolsztyn when regular steam is running.
