Seat belt PSA (Ad Council) - Early '70s By request: "What's Your Excuse?" ... with some very creepy video/sound effects. Voiced by Jack Webb (not Scott Muni as I previously thought). Watch, but don't wrinkle your dress. Tags: ad council PSA seat belts excuse jack webb |

Chef Boy-Ar-Dee commercial - 1953 Unlike Betty Crocker, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee was NOT a fictional advertising icon; he was a real Italian chef. Hector Boiardi came to the U.S. as a teenager, became chef of a Cleveland hotel, and then opened a restaurant where his spaghetti recipe became famous. The rest is history. (It became "Boy-Ar-Dee" because that was easier than having to teach Italian pronunciation to 1950s housewives) As Colonel Sanders did, Chef Boiardi (note the accent on the middle syllable) used to appear in his own commercials. CBS Records - 1983 "Red Letter" sale Cassettes. You DO remember what those were ... don't you? Here's a nice '80s flashback. (The savings might've been 'red hot', but the tape they used was worse than crappy!) Tags: CBS Columbia cassette red letter 1980s |

East River Mountain Tunnel encore We loved WV so much we returned! Here we are going northbound ... our one break from lots of rain (two days later we'd have a big snowfall). Best if played after the Big Walker Mtn. adventure -- we stopped for gas before getting back on I-77, and a lady there explained what was causing all the delays. (A raspberry to the Va. DOT for not posting signs warning of delays, as Alabama will often do) Tags: Bluefield West Virginia tunnel I-77 |

West Virginia Winter Wonderland A pleasant surprise during our little vacation to W.Va. over St. Patrick's Day weekend. 4" in the Summersville Lake area!! More snow than my southwest Georgia-born wife has ever seen in all her 37 years. FYI: Two Ibuprofen tablets made up our snowman's eyes, and its schnoz was a baby carrot. Pine Bluff, Revisited My first real stab at doing a music video. The song is "Pine Bluff Blues" by delta bluesman Booker T. "Bukka" White, and played by a British guitarist named Bottleneck Bill (recorded by Jim Clark). I lived in Pine Bluff in the late '80s, fresh out of college and beginning my adult life in radio. In March '06 my wife and I were driving through PB, my first visit there in about 15 years. I freely admit not liking Pine Bluff too much (and going by various 'cities rated' publications, I'm not the only one). Even so, it saddens me to see the stations where I began my adult working years silent and rotting. I do love that song, though. Tags: Pine Bluff KOTN KCLA KZYP |

Amoco commercial - early 1969 Groovy commercial for what was then American Oil. "The American Scene" personified Madison Avenue's warped perception of youth in the late '60s. They wanted a mod Nehru jacket'ed pop group and what they got was a cheesy "b-b-bah-BAAAH!" style which instead sounds like SCTV's "Five Neat Guys" I'll bet the twitterpated gas station attendant forgot to check the bass guitarist's oil. 30 cents a gallon, folks - c'mon!! This Little "Bird" of Mine My son, age 5, was in the childrens' choir at our church. The kids were supposed to hold up their INDEX fingers while singing "This Little Light." However, Trey had other ideas. (honest, at the time he didn't know!) Tags: Trey church bird flip |

Deep South Opera My FIL was in top form at our nephew's birthday pool party back in July '05. He had the stereo of his truck blasting music, but he briefly changed stations and had opera going. I don't know about you, but I think he's ready for the Met. Tags: opera parody Georgia |
