Afrikaanse olifant - African elephant herd Elephants have one of the longest lifespan of all mammals: about seventy years. Elephants eat vegetation like leaves, roots, bark, grasses and fruit. Each day they can consume anywhere from 100 to 300 kg of food, and drink up to 190 L of water. African elephants wander day or night in non-territorial herds that can reach 200 elephants. Their society is based on a social matriarchal community. The herd's well being depends on the guidance of the matriarch. She determines when they eat, rest, bathe or drink. As the matriarch begins to be limited by advancing age, around 50-60 years old, the next oldest replaces her and she is either abandoned or leaves by herself. Its global population has been estimated at 270,000 individuals. The White-backed Vulture is a typical vulture, with only down feathers on the head and neck, very broad wings and short tail. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of animals which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation. It often moves in flocks. It requires tall trees for nesting. Het is een aaseter. witruggier - witrugaasvoël - white-backed vulture - gyps africanus Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. Tags: wwwstockshotnl wwwfaunafilmnl |

gevlekte hyena - spotted hyaena - crocuta crocuta Spotted hyaenas are hunters and scavengers and can even chase lions away from their kills. They are intelligent, noisy and gregarious, living in groups of as few as five or as many as 80 individuals. Spotted hyaenas give birth to 1 or 2 cubs (very rarely 3) at a time, and the mother typically feeds her young with rich milk for many months, often for over one year. Spotted hyaenas are the most abundant large carnivore in Africa. gevlekte hyena - gevlekte hiëna - spotted hyaena - crocuta crocuta Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. Tags: wwwstockshotnl wwwfaunafilmnl |

jakhals -black-backed jackal - canis mesomelas Black backed jackals will eat just about anything: they take the path of least work to get their food. They will readily scavenge and are often seen around lion, leopard and hyena kills. They will also eat fruits and berries. They do not seem to have a preference to any one particular type of food, they will eat whatever is available. The Black-backed Jackal usually lives together in pairs that last for life, but often hunts in packs to catch larger prey such as the Impala and antelopes. When they do hunt, they are very successful hunters. Black backed jackals cache their food, which is normally consumed a day after it is cached. jakhals - rooijakkals - black-backed jackal - canis mesomelas Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. waterbok - waterbuck - kobus ellipsiprymnus The Waterbuck is a large shaggy African antelope. As its name would indicate they live near water. Their diet consists of grass, reeds and leaves. The most conspicuous feature of this antelope is a large white "halo" that surrounds the base of the tail on the rump. Its coat is impregnated with oils that provide waterproofing. Males have horns-- they grow 55 -- 100 cm long and they sweep in an arc backwards and upwards, with the tips pointing forwards. Waterbucks live in small herds of 5-25 animals, with one dominant male and several females and young. When in danger, the Waterbuck will lie flat in the grass hoping to avoid detection or will try and hide or swim away in water. Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. olifant - African elephant - loxodonta africana African elephants are the heaviest land animal, and the second tallest in the Animal Kingdom. They have enormous ears and a unique nose that is simply a long, boneless trunk extending from the upper lip. The trunk itself is so strong it is capable of lifting 600 pounds (250- 275 kg). Their incisor teeth develop into tusks about 245 cm long and can weigh about 60 kg each. Elephants have one of the longest lifespan of all mammals: about seventy years. wrattenzwijn - warthog - phacochoerus aethiopicus Neither graceful nor beautiful, warthogs are nonetheless remarkable and cute animals. They are found in most of Africa south of the Sahara and are widely distributed in East Africa. They are the only pigs able to live in areas without water for several months of the year. By tolerating a higher-than-normal body temperature, the warthog is perhaps able to conserve moisture inside its body that might otherwise be used for cooling. When water is available, warthogs drink regularly and enjoy wallowing in muddy places. As part of their grooming they also take sand baths, rub against trees and termite mounds and let tick birds pick insects off their bodies. wrattenzwijn - vlakvark - warthog - phacochoerus aethiopicus Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. kaapse baviaan - chacma baboon - papio ursinus Baboons have a large head, cheek pouches, and a long, doglike muzzle. They walk on all fours, carrying the tail in a characteristic arch. Baboons leave in troops of up to 40 or 50 individuals. They congregate at night in a chosen tree or cliff, where they sleep. They never travel too far from their sleeping spot, but they normally have more than one of these sleeping-sites within their territory, which they use on a rotation basis. Spending most of the dayon the ground, Baboons are exposed to predators. Baboons are very alert, often in associating with other animals, like Impala. If a predator approaches, the males give an alarm bark and the troop will go up the trees; if no trees available, the vulnerable members of the troop will congregate in the center of the group, with the males on the outside. Adult males can weigh up to 35Kg and their life span is about 18 years. Baboons are omnivorous: they feed on fruit, roots, leaves, grass, flowers, insects, lizards, birds and their eggs. They might even kill the newborns of some antelope and even Leopard. kaapse baviaan - kaapse bobbejaan - chacma baboon - papio ursinus Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. moose & calf - elk - alces alces North Americans refer to this animal as moose; an Indian word meaning "eater of twigs". In Europe, it is known as elk. The scientific name, alces alces, also translates into British English as elk. From the shortness of their necks, moose are unable to graze, and their chief food consists of young shoots and leaves of willow and birch, water plants and tree bark and mast in winter. Male moose (bulls) can weigh over 550 kg and females (cows) are sometimes more than 400 kg. The female gives birth during the spring or summer. She usually has one baby. Moose calves can stand up within a day and they can swim within a couple of weeks. Calves are weaned after about six months and will stay with their mother until the next young are born. Mothers are very protective of their calves and will charge people if they get too close. Moose can run as fast as 35 mph, so it's a good idea to stay out of their way! muskusos - musk ox - ovibos moschatus Muskox are large animals that look like bison, but have wool like sheep. Most of the arctic tundra was host to the musk ox long ago, but they were hunted almost to extinction. They died out in Europe during the last ice age. Musk oxen were introduced in Dovrefjell National Park in Norway in 1932 and 1947-53, previously the natural habitat of this ancient species. Muskoxen live in herds as small as 5 animals during the summer, and may join with other small groups to form herds as large as 60 individuals in the winter. These larger groups help provide for protection from both the elements and predators. Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. More wildlife available! Tags: wwwstockshotnl wwwfaunafilmnl |

rendier - reindeer - rangifer tarandus Rangifer tarandus is the only species of deer in which both sexes have antlers. Mature bulls can carry enormous and complex antlers, whereas cows and young animals generally have smaller and simpler ones. Males compete for access to females during the fall rut, which occurs in October and early November. Two males will lock each other's antlers together and try to push each other away. Dominant males can collect as many as 15-20 females to mate with. Males stop feeding during this time and lose much of their body reserves. Mature bulls usually shed their antlers shortly after the rut whereas cows can keep theirs until spring. Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage.
