Lessons from Bolivia This past summer Missouri University of Science and Technology's chapter of Engineers Without Borders traveled to two destinations in Bolivia to apply their engineering skills to local problems. The first destination was a small boarding school in the Amazon. There the problem consisted of finding a clean source of water. The second location was in Inca Katurapi, a small village in the Andes where there had never been latrines. UMR students and faculty developed composting latrines for the community in an attempt to help reduce the infant mortality rate. What follows is the story of that adventure. Rescue in the Mine Mining is dangerous work. Every day miners are faced with explosions, floods, cave-ins, and toxic gasses. Mine rescue is a vital part of the mining industry, requiring very specialized techniques for freeing trapped miners. Missouri University of Science and Technology has a program of mine rescue and each year members of the Missouri S & T mine rescue team compete with other institutions and mining companies to test their skills. Follow UMR's Mine Rescue Team as they perform a simulated rescue at the University of Missouri-Rolla's test mine. Tags: Mine Rescue Extreme Danger UMR Engineering |
