The Real Tueday Weld: Kix During the same recording time frame as his latest opus, The London Book of the Dead, Stephen Coates aka the Real Tuesday Weld created a special side project release which he titled The End of the World. This conceptual companion piece is an imaginary concert, which takes place in an imaginary club. Coates himself describes the record thusly: "The End of the World" is a valedictory 'performance' recorded on the eve of Valentine's Day at the mysterious / mythical 'End of the World' club in London. The Band performed a set of Pre-apocalyptic junkyard blues songs about, in honor of, and inspired by dreams and dreaming in a one-off set recorded especially for this release. Special guests appear and disappear as both performers and audience prepare themselves to say goodbye and to face an uncertain future realizing that only heaven knows what tomorrow will bring." The Orb: Vuja De The Orb, for years the most fearlessly fascinating sonic marauders on this or any other planet, have returned in 2008 with a new album, The Dream, marking a long-awaited reunion between eternal mainstay Dr. Alex Paterson and lifelong friend and original inter-galactic conspirator Youth. The Dream sees a return to the original spirit which spawned the first two classic albums, The Orb's Adventures In The Ultraworld and U.F. Orb. Working with former Dreadzone studio-wiz Tim Bran and a gaggle of guests, Alex and Youth have created a work of stunning beauty and immediacy while never losing sight of The Orb's original quest to homage personal musical obsessions while exploring sonic territories few dare to tread. The Dream is one of those rare albums that weave its own unique magic after repeated listens. Tags: The Orb music ambient house techno electronica dance groove lounge world |

Ojos de Brujo: Techari Live cover of "Get up Stand up" Latin Grammy Award Winners, Ojos de Brujo (translates to "Eyes of the Wizard") stands out as one of the truly original groups of the new millennium. They hail from the thriving sonic melting pot of Barcelona, and yet exist in a class of their own. The music reflects their Spanish and gypsy heritage, but travels light years beyond traditional flamenco. Their live shows have become the stuff of legend, and they have left a path of sold-out shows and stunned audiences worldwide. The profesional audio CD and DVD features a handful of special guests including a throbbing horn section led by Carlos Sarduy, Martirio on a head-rush rendition of "Todo Tiende," and Daara J MC Faada Freddy for a feisty version of Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up." Ojos de Brujo's signature flamenco dancers and stimulating AV graphics also add visual fireworks to the DVD. Throughout the performance is the sense of a collective who are restlessly nomadic in their search for new sounds, and genuinely delighted to share it with us. Pacifika: "Me Caí" Pacifika is the multi-talented Silvana Kane, a Peruvian born singer, and accomplished actress with a love of flamenco, electronica, and textured percussion; Adam Popowitz a Canadian bred guitarist adept at new wave, classical, and pop, and a skilled producer responsible for a catalogue that includes indie rock and Armenian folk music; and Toby Peter, a dub wise bassist born in Canada and raised in Barbados, explorer of jazz, hip-hop, Latin, metal and Caribbean grooves. Together the Vancouver based trio is making a new kind of global pop, music that nods to its diverse international influences, while forging its own unique voice. Latin tinged, marked by gently flowing melodies, deep grooves, waves of cracking percussion and the occasional burst of exhilarating guitar noise, Pacifika's comfortable, complex sound defies categories, creating soothing soundscapes held together by Kane's smooth, intimate vocals. Jorane: stay Elusive and indefinable, Jorane's music draws freely upon alternative rock, folk, classical, and ambient music idioms, eliciting comparisons along the way with such distinctive artists as Kate Bush, Bjork, Tori Amos, Sinead O'Connor and Loreena McKennitt. Previous albums found Jorane singing primarily in French or in a non-verbal "jabberwocky." But on The You and the Now, the album that will provide her introduction to most of the English-speaking world, Jorane joined forces with noted Canadian musician and producer Michael Brook (Jane Siberry, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Brian Eno, Mary Margaret O'Hara) to create her first album of songs in English. The album includes songs co-written with Lisa Germano (John Mellencamp, Simple Minds, Indigo Girls), Simon Wilcox and Shira Myrow, as well as a recent, previously unrecorded selection by Daniel Lanois (U2, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel) who joins her on the recording. The Real Tuesday Weld: Black Birdies Come The Real Tuesday Weld's music has fascinated more than just listeners and critics -- it has also drawn the attention of major advertisers, and has been licensed to accompany ads for Cherry Coke (you may have seen the commercial in which cherries fall from the sky onto a bewildered but eventually delighted urban crowd, while Coates's "I Love the Rain" plays in the background) and for TV shows like Weeds (Showtime), Gilmore Girls (WB) and Nip/Tuck (FX). All of this speaks to not only to Coates's finely wrought sense of irony, but also to his "anything goes" musical approach: asked about his often unusual instrumental choices, he responds, "banjo, kazoo, potato peeler, you name it -- I'll stick anything in."
