Listen to Sonam Wangchuk, spokeperson from the Tibetan Youth Congress, talk about the human rights situation in Tibet, and need for supporters to take action. He also urges his audience to take action on behalf of Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen who was detained in March 2008 by the Chinese government. Wangchen and his assistant Golog Jigme traveled all over Tibet filming in an effort to communicate the dire situation inside the Tibetan Autonomous Region to the rest of the world. They risked their lives—and "left fear behind" knowing full-well the consequences when discovered by the Chinese. There is an international action campaign to pressure China to release both Tibetans whose only "crime" was to interview Tibetans about their feelings regarding the Chinese occupation. Falun Gong Is Good, Free Tibet 8.8.08 8.8.08 Global Demonstrations for Tibetan Freedom and Human Rights In Tibet and China Chinese Consulate, New York City A hundred million people in China practice Falun Gong, a meditative spiritual practice similar to Tai Chi. At the same time, the Chinese Government began a crackdown against Falun Gong practitioners in 1999 that continues today. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens are being arrested, tortured, sentenced to hard labor/concentration camps, and killed—all for taking part in a peaceful and compassionate meditative art. Persecution has spread to the US where hate crimes sponsored by the Chinese government are threatening the safety and liberty of Chinese-Americans who wish to practice their religion and spirituality in a free two-party country. What is wrong with China? China continues to torture Tibetan monks and nuns inside Tibet, and its own people inside mainland China. If China wants to be respected and valued by other countries moving into the future, the Chinese government must improve and amend its human rights record. Stop the use of torture to intimidate and oppress Tibetans and Chinese. One world-one dream-human rights for all. The following information is provided from the Falun Dafa Information Center website: Top 10 Things You Should Know about the Beijing Olympics and Falun Gong, Posted: 10 Jun 2008 1. China's Olympic Committee President was found liable for torture. 2. To prepare for the Olympics, Chinese security ordered a "strike hard" against Falun Gong. 3. Falun Gong practitioners are being killed in custody faster and more frequently than before. 4. Thousands of Falun Gong practitioners around China have been arrested "in preparation" for the games. 5. Falun Gong practitioners are officially excluded from the Games because of religious belief, in clear violation of the Olympic Charter. 6. Falun Gong has never taken a position on an Olympic boycott. 7. A "clean up" of districts hosting Olympic venues has included the arrest of local residents who practice Falun Gong. 8. Despite ostensibly freer regulations for foreign journalists, Falun Gong remains taboo. 9. Hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners will experience the Olympics from inside labor camps, where they are often tortured. 10. Most Chinese are unaware of any of the above because independent information about Falun Gong remains blocked inside China. We Remember Tiananmen Square 1989: Free Tibet Now 8.8.08 Global Demonstrations for Tibetan Freedom Chinese Consulate, New York City In 1989, the Chinese Government crushed a student pro-democracy movement in the most hideous way thinkable. Thousands of China's best and brightest intellects were doused with gasoline and set on fire, and then driven over with tanks. Remaining, if any, survivors, were sentenced to long prison terms—and still are incarcerated nearly twenty years later. Across from the Chinese Consulate in New York City, thousands of Tibetans gathered to voice their concerns about the ongoing human rights abuses in Tibet including unlawful arrests, detainment, beatings and torture of hundreds of Tibetan monks and nuns. Rev. Dr. Daughtry reminded Tibet supporters that China also continues to support an unlawful regime in Sudan where hundreds and thousands of people have been killed, with the support of China's investment and other foreign policies. Free Tibet 8.8.08: NYC Councilman Tony Avella 8.8.08 Global Demonstrations for Tibetan Freedom Chinese Consulate, New York City On 8.8.08, the Beijing 08 Summer Olympics began. All over the world, Tibet supporters spoke out for human rights and reminded people everywhere not to forget the human rights abuses the Chinese military continues to conduct inside Tibet. Hundreds of Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns remain imprisoned at Drapchi, one of the world's most feared prisons. More than two hundred Tibetans have been killed, and thousands have been detained and/or have disappeared since March 10, 2008. When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded China the 08 Olympics, President Hu Jintao promised to improve China's human rights record. It is time for China to wake up and put a stop to barbaric practices including the use of daily beatings, exposures to extreme heat and cold, and the use of electric cattle prods against peaceful demonstrators who want basic human rights including freedom of expression and religious practice. Tibetan Uprising 2008 New York City Councilman Tony Avella On March 10, 2008, the Tibetan Freedom Movement launched its global Tibetan People's Uprising. In New York City, thousands of Tibetans and Tibet supporters gathered at City Hall early in the morning and then marched to the United Nations. Tibetans inside and outside Tibet have begun a series of nonviolent direct actions including a return march to Tibet. The Chinese military has since cracked down on the Tibetan people and over 100 Tibetans have been killed inside Tibet. The Tibetan People demand the Chinese Government allow H.H. the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, to return to his homeland Tibet. Demonstrators ask for the release of hundreds of political prisoners, and for China to stop its Colonial rule and population transfer, which is wiping out what remains of Tibetan culture inside the country. The Tibetan People have also called for a boycott of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and request the International Olympic Committee stop the Olympic Torch relay route through Lhasa, Tibet. Until Tibet is free and the Chinese government puts a stop to its human rights abuses, China does not deserve to host the Beijing 2008 Olympics. One world—one dream—Free Tibet now.
